Sailing in Greece - Eretria to Khalkis passing the High Bridge Evripos - Carl and Jenny
In this episode we continue sailing in Greece from Eretria to Khalkis. We leave the anchorage of Eretria and get a send off from the RAF Red Arrows! The journey was mainly under engine as the sea state was quite calm with very little wind. Still a pleasant trip. We get to use transit markers for the first time since we've been sailing in the Med. We sail underneath the High Bridge Evripos, which itself is a significant landmark in Khalkis (Chalkis). We end the day dropping anchor in the bay opposite Khalkis town

Ep.57 Midnight crossing of the Khalkis Bridge on the Evia Channel, Greece by boat - Carl and Jenny
In this episode we explore the Greek town of Khalkis located within the Evia channel. Jen goes for a tour around the ancient Karababa Castle overlooking the town and finds some Greek ancient artifacts dating back over a thousand years. We later pass through the famous Khalkis bridge at midnight in some strong currents whilst overlooked by hundreds of tourists in this nightly parade! To pass through the bridge you first have to register with the Port Police and Harbour master. Each boat is then called through in turn, but it does become a free for all once the first boat goes!

Chalkís or Chalkida is the chief town of the island of Euboea in Greece, situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point.
A special tidal phenomenon takes place in the strait, as strong tidal currents reverse direction once every six hours, creating strong currents and maelstroms.

Crossig the Bridge to North - Chalkis 3am - Sailing SY PADNEA
Andy Eva and Johannes sailing from Apostoli on the Greek Attika Coast, to the Citiy of Chalkis. In Chalkis we have to cross the Bridge to get further North. The Bridge connects the Evian Island and the Greek Mainland. In this narrow Gap, heavy tidal currents, and the biggest Waterlevel difference in the Mediterranean are appearing.
We are a small Family, living on our Sailboat PADNEA, living our Dream. We left the Land and moved to the Sea.

Westerly Pageant DOLPHIN No. 9. Sailing in the Greek Islands - The Khalkis Bridge.
Khalkis sits where the Evia Channel narrows to about 40 metres across. One of the few places in the Med where tidal streams have to be taken into account - the pilot gives tidal speeds of 6 to 7 knots through the narrows at springs.
The low-level bridge across the narrows is opened only at the slack water which occurs during the night hours, the period of slack water being around half an hour.
Vessels wanting to pass through have to register and pay the passage fee to the port police during the day, before anchoring close to the bridge in the evening and waiting for radio instructions to go through.
You need to be on the ball, the window for movement is short, and the port police don't mess about.......

GREECE: Historic GORGOPOTAMOS (1942, British and Greek resistance destroyed bridge)
SUBSCRIBE: - The famous bridge of Gorgopotamos (Γοργοπόταμος), Greece. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Operation Harling, known as the Battle of Gorgopotamos (Greek: Μάχη του Γοργοποτάμου) in Greece, was a World War II mission by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), in cooperation with the Greek Resistance groups EDES and ELAS, which destroyed the heavily guarded Gorgopotamos viaduct in Central Greece on 25 November 1942. This was one of the first major sabotage acts in Axis-occupied Europe, and the beginning of a permanent British involvement with the Greek Resistance.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.
