Lithuania Vilnius Užupis Bridge and Locks
Užupis means on the other side of the river in the Lithuanian language and refers to the Vilnia River; the name Vilnius was derived from the Vilnia. The district has been popular with artists for some time, and has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, due to its bohemic and never-mind atmosphere. On April 1, 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis).

Užupis is a neighborhood in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, largely located in Vilnius' old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Užupis means the other side of the river in the Lithuanian language and refers to the Vilnia River; the name Vilnius was derived from the Vilnia. The district has been popular with artists for some time, and has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, due to its bohemic and laissez-faire atmosphere. On April 1, 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis). Since the first of November 2014 Jaap van Ark is president of republic Užupis. Užupis is quite small and isolated, being only about 148 acres (0.60 km2) in size; it has around 7,000 inhabitants, nearly 1,000 being artists. On one side it is separated from the Old Town by the Vilnia River, on the second there are steep hills, and on the third side it borders on an industrial area built under soviet rule, which is now to be rebuilt into a fashionable district. The first bridges across the river were built in the 16th century, at which time the district's inhabitants were mostly Jewish. In 1997, the residents of the area declared the Republic of Užupis, along with its own flag, currency, president, cabinet of ministers, a constitution written by Romas Lileikis and Thomas Chepaitis, an anthem, and an army (numbering approximately 11 men). They celebrate this independence annually on Užupis Day, which falls on April 1. Artistic endeavours are the main preoccupation of the Republic; the former President of the Republic of Užupis, Romas Lileikis, is himself a poet, musician, and film director.
Artūras Zuokas, a former mayor of Vilnius, lives in Užupis and frequently takes part in the Republic's events. Užupis does not house internet-cafes, kiosks, big malls, or governmental institutions (except Užupian), and there is no embassy to Lithuania. It is unclear whether the statehood of the Republic, recognized by no government, is intended to be serious, tongue-in-cheek, or a combination of both. The decision to place Užupis Day on April 1 (April Fools' Day) may not be coincidental, emphasizing the importance of humor and non-importance of serious political decisions. The flag of the Republic contains a palm of hand in a white background. Each season the palm emblem has another color: Winter - blue, Spring - green, Summer - yellow, Autumn – red. On April 1, 2002, a statue of an angel blowing a trumpet was unveiled in the main square. The idea was developed from a desire to erect an angel in memory of animator and caricaturist Zenonas Šteinys. It became a symbol of the revival Užupis. The funds were raised by selling miniature copies of the sculpture. The sculptor, Romas Vilčiauskas, is also the creator of the Užupis Mermaid.
Previously, a temporary sculpture of an egg stood in its place. The egg itself became the subject of various anecdotes. After being replaced by the larger statue of Gabriel, the egg was sold at an auction for 10,200 litas and now stands on Pylimo street.Wikipedia
Vilnius, City Walk - Lithuania 4K Travel Channel
The starting point for our city walk is the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus. This time take a look inside, where a Holy Mass just takes place
From the cathedral, we continue to the funicular tramway which brings us to the Gediminas mountain. We pass the National Museum of Lithuania, in front of which stands a monument to the Grand Duke Mindaugas. He is regarded as the founder of Lithuania and even received the royal crown at the instigation of Pope Innocent IV, in 1253. He was murdered in 1263 because he had lost the support of the population.
From the top of Gediminas Mountain, we have a wonderful panoramic view over Vilnius. Countless churches determine the cityscape. The steepness of the flanks of the mountain gives a sense of how difficult it was for attackers to take over the fortress. Gediminas' Tower on the mountain now houses a museum and is the landmark of Vilnius.
Back at the foot of the mountain we go back to the cathedral and pass the castle. From there we turn into Pilies gatve. It is the main shopping street and the tourist center of Vilnius.
Along the street you find plenty of restaurants and shops. Approximately in the middle of the road, the Literary Street branches off to the left.
Innumerable bookstores and antiquarians lined the narrow lane once. The Lithuanian writer Adam Mickiewicz also lived here temporarily.
Egle Vertelkaite, the curator of the Modern Art Center, launched the project Literatų Street in 2009. About 150 artists pay homage to writers and poets who influenced Lithuanian literature. Therefore they created on the house walls about 200 tiles and plaques made of different materials, such as ceramics, wood, or glass. Also some unknown literati are immortalized here.
The road ends at the Cathedral of the Theotokos in the Maironio gatve.
From here it is only a few steps to Uzupio gatve. The bridge over the Vilnia leads to Uzupis, one of the oldest districts of Vilnius. After Lithuania's independence, it became more and more of a bohemian district. In 1997, the artists proclaimed the independent Republic of Uzupis.

Vilnius In Your Pocket - Užupis
Vilnius In Your Pocket visits Užupis. Before the war the strange and exotic district of Užupis (which means 'over the river') was one of the main Jewish parts of the city. During the Soviet occupation Užupis was adopted by artists and other non-conformists and it acquired a reputation as the Lithuanian Montmartre. After Old Town, Užupis is the most popular place to visit. In 1997 it declared independence, and the 'Republic of Užupis' now has its own president, flag, army and constitution. Užupis Independence Day is on April 1 and if you want to visit on this day you may be approached by one of the Republic's soldiers and asked for your passport before you're allowed to cross the bridge.

Vilnius Panorama from Baltasis tiltas bridge
The Baltasis Bridge (The White Bridge) is a footbridge. It is one of the popular pedestrian bridges in the city. This bridge connects Vilnius city centre and the relaxing zone (shopping hall VCUP, sand volleyball courts, Skate Park). Moreover, at the beginning of the bridge, there is restaurant. Also, the summer leisure zone is located near the bridge. So, during the summer season, there are lots of people around the Baltasis Bridge.
The Baltasis Bridge is unique because of the ray-spear sculpture that decorates it.
A lot of bridges such as the ‘The Point Neuf Bridge’ in Paris, ‘The Golden Gate Bridge’ in San Francisco, ‘The Brooklyn Bridge’ in New York etc.

VILNIUS OLD TOWN, LITHUANIA 2019
Vilnius Old Town is a very interesting place to visit and is definitely one of my favorite destinations in Europe it is one of the largest surviving medieval town in Northern and Eastern Europe. Plenty of tourist attractions to visit and explore. There are many available accommodations in Vilnius Old Town, from luxurious and expensive, moderately priced hotels,, home stays, rental apartment for short stays, down to cheap bed at budget hostels. Try to explore streets like Pilies and Vilnaus for dining or anywhere else in the courtyards and corners alleys of the town. Choosing where to eat will be a dilemma with the numerous good options in Vilnius Old Town.
A big bonus for travellers is a chance to explore the self-proclaimed Republic of Užupis (oo-zhu-pis). A large part of Užupis is within the boundaries of Vilnius Old Town. Užupis has a different vibe and was made so by the free-spirited artists who dwell there.
I love Vilnius!
Literatu St

Vilnius Old Town - In Search of Alaya
The Old Town of Vilnius has a large number of Churches, holy sites, and temples from numerous religions. From Christian Orthodoxy to traditional pagans, temples in Vilnius have been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. What can Vilnius teach us about how faith defines a city, and how that evolves over time?
Vilnius, City Tour by Bus - Lithuana 4K Travel Channel
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and, in terms of area, the largest city in the Baltics. Vilnius was never subordinate to the Teutonic Order. Vilnius has always had a very liberal reputation until the Poles were expelled in World War II and the Jews fled or were murdered.
The name of the city originates from the small river Vilnia, which flows near the Gediminas mountain in the Neris. Grand Duke Gediminas founded the city in 1323. He wooed for merchants, scientists, and craftsmen, also with the argument of the two churches. The freedom of religion influenced the liberality of the city for a long time. Nevertheless, the city was repeatedly attacked and devastated by the Teutonic Order. Therefore, the Grand Duke Wladysław II Jagiello entered into an alliance with Poland and married the Polish Queen Hedwig. Then the land was Christianized and one destroyed the pagan temple on the Gediminas mountain.
Originally Vilnius was capital of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Abieju Tautu Respublika from 1569 to 1795. After being controlled by Russia, Poland, Sweden, and Germany, Vilnius became the capital of Lithuania again in 1990. Already in 1579, one founded the University of Vilnius.
In the morning of the next day, the weather seems to be better again and we decide to make a city tour by bus in Vilnius to get a quick overview of the most important sights.
The bus tour starts in the city center near the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus. It is the oldest church on Lithuanian soil, already built in the 13th century. It received its classical appearance in 1783. The cathedral was built on the remains of a first Christian church and on the remains of a pagan temple.
Behind the cathedral is the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.
Next station is the Presidential Palace.
In an outer arch, the bus travels around the old town to the east and reaches St. Anne's Church and the Church of St. Francis and St. Bernard. On the opposite side of the street is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel.
A few meters further on is the white Cathedral of the Theotokos.
Right next to it, the bridge leads over the Vilnia River to a special neighborhood in Vilnius, the Republic of Uzupis.
