Australia: Tasmania 4wd Part 3 | Montezuma | Ring River | Jacobs Ladder | Bellington [2018] #141
Tasmania - A inspirational 4wd travel documentary about the West Coast of Australia's Apple island. Once more we discover the uniquely beautiful and often hard to reach places Tasmania has to offer. With our 4wd we are exploring the more challenging offroad tracks and locations not readily available to most people. Completely self-sufficient we were overlanding and camping at some magic spots.
In part three of our off road adventure we The next morning we were greeted by a gorgeous sunrise and we proceeded north back up the beach, made our way back through Zeehan and up to the spectacular Montezuma Falls .
From Montezuma, we existed via the notorious (classified extreme) Ring River Road and headed north east, cross country via Table Mountain where we stopped at Lake Cethana Dam to enjoy the views and a nice little break before heading on again.
After a brief stop in Launceston we made our way up into the Ben Lomond National Park and drove the amazing Jacobs Ladder. This ancient landscape formed by glacial activity is truly a sight to behold.
From here we continued traveling north and back onto the coast arriving at Bridport. Entering the beach and dune systems we travelled toward Bellingham through the Double Sandy Point Conservation Area. We spend a couple of days relaxing and enjoying the beach before heading back to Devonport to conclude our trip.
Tasmania 4wd – Montezuma Falls Track – This is a Medium grade, 14.5 km track running along the cutting from the original N E Dundas Tramway. Due to this fact it is mostly flat or has a gentle gradient other than a few creek crossings such as Kapi and the Great Northern Creek where the timber bridges are no longer in place and the track drops down through the creek lines. This track is very muddy with allot of standing water however it is mostly firm based and wont present to many issues to any dual range 4wd with all terrain or mud tyres. Note – this track is narrow with minimal spaces to pass oncoming vehicles
Tasmania 4x4 – Ring River Road – Approximately 12kms in length this is a Hard grade track consisting of deep mud, potentially dangerous river crossings, steep slippery slopes and large rock steps. This track is weather dependant and only suitable for experienced drivers with well-prepared vehicles. It is also advisable to travel with at least two other vehicles for safety. Note – this track is far more easily traversed from the Montezuma Falls Track back down to the Murchison Hwy rather than the other way around
Tasmania 4wd – Jacobs Ladder – Situated in the Ben Lomond national Park 50kms South East of Launceston the road from the boundary of the National park to the ski village at the top is approximately 10km’s long and climbs to an altitude of 1400mtrs. Between June and September, snow chains must be carried and the road may be closed at short notice due to snow and ice. The road is currently being upgraded and a 30km/h speed limit is being enforced.
Tasmania 4wd – St Albans Bay – Also known as the Bridport to Bellingham Traverse. This track, approximately 22km’s long and rated hard, offers stunning coastal views, beach and dune driving with several fairly well-sheltered campsites along the way within the dune areas

Bridport to Bellingham Rescue v.9
In 'kteam stories, Bridport to Bellingham fail v.8' we were sunk into a boggy muddy water-hole up to our axles, no way to get out except call for help, finding somebody to pull us out. we had little reception, so first Kane had to take a hard walk up a few dunes. Then we waited for our rescuer to arrive.

Tasmania by 4WD Part 2 | Lake Cumberland Track | Mt McCall | Mt Huxley | Henty Dunes [2018] #144
In part two of our off road adventure we tackle the legendary Lake Cumberland Track and spend the afternoon admiring the stunning Lake Cumberland before heading back down into the remote but beautiful Trial Harbour. We camped the night at a little known River Camp Spot. This was a good choice as it kept us nicely sheltered as the weather closed in that evening.
The next morning we were greeted by a gorgeous sunrise and we proceeded north back up the beach, made our way back through Zeehan visiting the Miners Museum
From there we headed toward Strahan. On route we stopped off at the Henty Dunes which was well worth a look. We then spend a couple of days in Strahan to experience a Franklin River Cruise, tour of historic Sarah Island and to be a part of the longest-running stage show in Australia, The Ship That Never Was.
Leaving the luxuries of town behind once more, we gain approval from National parks and travel via Queenstown and Lake Burbury to get up to the majestic Mt McCall.
The next day saw us visit Mt Huxley Track before running North East cross country via Table Mountain.
Tracks:
Tasmania - Lake Cumberland Track – This track, running from Climes Track or Trial Harbour rd, is approximately 5km in length. This is a Hard grade track suitable for experienced drivers in modified vehicles with front, rear and underbody protection. Traction aids such as traction control, lockers or limited slip diffs are recommended and an electric or hand winch would be a good back up especially once reaching the top where the mud can catch out even the most prepared travellers.
Tasmania - Henty Dunes 4wd – Access to the Henty Dunes is 14km’s nth of Strahan. The access track from the car park is narrow, steep and soft and will require the lowering of tyre pressures before attempting the climb. It is recommended that only experienced sand drivers, or at least having an experienced driver in the group, attempt the run through the dunes as all access tracks and dunes that range up to 30 or 40 mtr’s will be soft at times and require a considered approach. Given there is no single defined access track once reaching the dunes it is easy to become misplaced and following a bread crumb trail on your GPS is advisable
Tasmania - Mt Mc Call Track – This Easy/ Medium grade track is approximately 22kms in length and suitable for dual range 4wds with some steep climbs, small ruts and steps. The track runs through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Due to this fact, permission to gain entry must be obtained via National Parks and your vehicles must be clean and free from thick mud and debris underneath. This is to prevent the spread of noxious weeds into the area
Tasmania – Mt Huxley Track – This 12km long track is rated Hard due to steep rocky climbs but shouldn’t present too many problems for any dual range 4wds with all terrain tyres and drivers with reasonable experience

Montezuma Falls 4wd track / Waterfalls of Tasmania
On the west coast of Tasmania is Montezuma Falls.
There is a walk in option (3hrs return) or a 4wd track.
The track follows the old North East Dundas Tramway (closed in 1932) through rainforest to the spectacular Montezuma Falls, at 104m one of the highest waterfalls in Tasmania.
From Zeehan, take the B27 for approximately 5 km to the Murchison Highway and turn left (north). Another 5 km on is the Melba Flats railway siding turn right here onto the 4WD track. It is approximately 14 kms to the carpark and a few hundred metres walk to the falls across a suspension bridge.
There were loads of washouts, followed by more and more deeper puddles and small creek crossings. There were a few technical spots and one very off camber section but all in all not a difficult drive at all.
The Montezuma Falls were beautiful. There is a thin steel sway-bridge across the gorge and gives an awesome view of the drop! We spent about 10 mins there having a chat and taking some photos before returning to the 4wds to head back.
There is also an alternate route out through the Ring River track that comes out near Renison Bell. This track is graded hard and should not be attempted when there is a high rainfall or if you are travelling alone. The sign states “ 'Extreme Grade 4wd Track Only. A minimum of two well equipped 4wds, and dangerous, possible life threatening river crossings, impassable in heavy rain. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to try this track on our visit as it was very late in the afternoon and we were in a convoy of cars where we decided it best to take the same way out as we came in.
The return trip was a lot faster than on the way, I guess we felt more comfortable on the tracks and were more familiar with the terrain! On the way to the falls with all the stops etc., we ticked over 2.5 hours and saved a heap of time on the way back!
