Brienz Rothorn Bahn (Switzerland) - Drivers Eye View
With the mist lifting on a warm still morning we catch the first train on the last operating day of 2015. The train crew are very friendly; keen we should enjoy their railway on this wonderful autumn day. We start climbing through autumn gold woods with shafts of sunshine breaking through the leaf cover creating an almost magical atmosphere, before passing through a series of tunnels, between which the line is perched on a narrow ledge, with occasional stunning views over the lake far below. We pass the tree line onto the rugged mountainside for more dramatic vistas across deep valleys and snow covered peaks. Take a seat and enjoy one of the most outstanding rides in Switzerland.
The railway is 7.6 kilometres (4.7 mi) long and the track gauge is 800 mm (2 ft 7 1⁄2 in)

Now the only Rack railway in Switzerland to offer a daily steam service over the summer months, the line is predominently worked by modern oil-fired steam locomotives built by SLM in the 1990's.

Voice-over:
Giessbach: This grand hotel was finished in 1874. Look at the elegance of the building, combined with the beautiful serene surroundings. You can imagine how the high society back in the days just loved to spend their precious time here.
Diplomats, artists, statesmen and even kings were regular visitors.
After 2 wars with disasterous consequences for the Swiss hotels, the fame and glory of Giessbach faded. It even closed it’s doors in 1979, and plans were made to demolish it. There should be something new, something modern.
Fortunately some people didn’t lose their mind, and a Swiss ecologist managed to buy the property and made Giessbach a gift to the people of Switzerland. There is a restaurant now, and a small number of renovated rooms. All to ensure this place is used as it was meant to be: a little escape from reality.
The Brienz Rothorn Bahn is far from an ordinary train. The locomotive strategically placed at the back, you slowly climb the mountain to over 2000 meter. This steam driven ride celebrates it’s 125th birthday this year. It truly really feels like a ride through history.
Well we’re only in for just a few minutes, when they call us to get outside. Come.
Leaving Giessbach it’s definitely worth it to take a stroll through the beautiful city of Brienz. We haven’t got much time though. They’re waiting for us..
And that’s the end of this weeks episode. But no worries, we’ll see you next week. Doeg!

Originally opened in 1892, the line climbs from the town of Brienz (566m above sea level) to the Rothhorn summit (2,244m) over a distance of 7.6km, taking about an hour. This video was taken on board a train propelled by locomotive No.15, which is a 'new build' light oil fired steam locomotive built in 1996.

The two designers, engineer Alexander Lindner and contractor Theo Bertschinger were supported by the mountain railway pioneer Roman Abt, who had responsibility for equipping the line with his newly developed double lamella rack system.
The railway was opened on 17 June 1892, after a two years construction period.
From the station at Rothorn Kulm it is a short walk up to the very peak of the Brienzer Rothorn. The 360° panorama takes in the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to the southwest, and the peaks of the Pilatus, Rigi and Jura to the north.

Brienz Rothorn Bahn: The Descent, September 2019
After a couple of hours exploring the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn, I board the steam train back down the mountain, swapping sides as we descend to get the best of the views as we head back to Brienz station. En route we pass a number of trains taking more passengers to the summit, before arriving back at our start point, Brienz station, just 566m above sea level.
Thank you for watching my series from my visit to the Brienz Rothorn Bahn. A trip that I recommend everyone does!
