A conversation between Pattern and Decoration artists Valerie Jaudon, Richard Kalina, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Ned Smyth, and Robert Zakanitch Moderated by Manuela Ammer
To kick off our exhibition Pattern and Decoration. Ornament as Promise, we are staging a panel discussion among artists from the Pattern and Decoration movement. The format of the panel has not been arbitrarily chosen: Pattern and Decoration was born, in a manner of speaking, from both private and public conversations that took place among artists in the mid-1970s. On January 26, 1975, artist Robert Zakanitch held a general „pattern“ meeting at his loft on Warren Street in New York, attended by, among others, art historian Amy Goldin, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Miriam Schapiro, and Kendall Shaw. This was followed by informal meetings at New York apartments, as well as by panel discussions such as The Pattern in Painting (1975), and Is Painting one of the Decorative Arts? (1976), at Artist‘s Space, New York, and Decorative Painting (1977), at the College Art Association‘s annual conference in Los Angeles. In these often heated conversations, a group spirit formed: the idea of a collective voice that could bring a different aesthetic and social awareness to the art world. As artist Robert Kushner remembers: “The group and its support was all important. A game changer. A validation. Without the group, I believe our work would not have grown, gained its strength, and certainly not its public visibility.” With the panel discussion at mumok, we are revisiting the ideas that brought those artists together in the first place and reflect on what they might mean to us today. Kindly supported by the U.S. Embassy
Pattern and Decoration. Ornament as Promise is on view at mumok from February 23, 2019 to September 08, 2019

Etwas Neues. Vielversprechendes. Unverfrorenes. Positives. Samstag, 23. Februar 2019
Is Painting one of the Decorative Arts? Embassy Die Ausstellung
Pattern and Decoration. Ornament als Versprechen ist von 23. Februar 2019 bis 08. September 2019 im mumok zu sehen!
Bright On Track Review in Australian by Shannon from Grasshopper Travel
We offer luxurious, spacious, fully serviced, semi self-contained apartments set in amongst beautiful secluded, tree-lined setting with valley views and only 5 minutes walk from the centre of town. Our bar and art gallery, swimming pool and heated spa will complete your holiday experience. We are located along the rail trail just off the Great Alpine Road only 700m easy walk to the town centre. Our units have been designed around the things we would have liked to have found in the places we stayed on our travels. Not everything is designed with economics in mind - some is just for pure pleasure. The rooms are large and bright. We have lovingly placed each and every brick, board and fixture by hand. We've chosen the colours, furnishings and décor with great care. Pictures in each room are originals. Not only do singles and couples like luxury but so do many families, so we have thought of you, too. The disabled deserve a good time as well, so we have a specially designed unit for you too. Our bar and art galley has been developed so you can relax and enjoy a drink, some light food and view the works of the most creative artists from throughout northeast Victoria.

Challenging the meaning of Aboriginal art | ABC News
A new exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery in Victoria is set to challenge the idea of what makes Indigenous art. The pieces are bright, bold and interactive, and while it's a long way from traditional Indigenous painting, the young artist who made them says they're simply a modern take on Aboriginal storytelling.

Reflections on the collection—Rob McHaffie, winner of the 2014 Geelong contemporary art prize
On Friday 29 August 2014, Geelong Gallery announced Rob McHaffie as the recipient of the '2014 Geelong contemporary art prize' for his bright, colourful and whimsical painting, 'Preserve this fruit' (2013).
This award-winning work—the first by McHaffie to be acquired by the Geelong Gallery—depicts a singular figure of an elderly man in profile in a style reminiscent of Asian shadow puppets and temple paintings.
McHaffie constructs an imaginary narrative between this elderly gentleman—representative of traditional Thai life—and the silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson, who in the years after the Second World War, reinvigorated the Thai silk industry.
This video explores Rob McHaffie's artistic practice and the intentions behind his award-winning painting whilst also hearing from two of the co-judges, Geoffrey Edwards (Director, Geelong Gallery) and Lisa Sullivan (Curator, Geelong Gallery).
Geelong Gallery gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Bayside City Council’s Artist in Residence program at Billilla Mansion Studios and, in particular, Mark Potter (Cultural Development Officer).
We would also like to warmly thank the following people for their involvement and support throughout the making of this film: Rob McHaffie (artist), Ross Bird (videographer) and Jesse Marlow (stills photographer).
The '2014 Geelong contemporary art prize' showcases the best of contemporary Australian painting practice. This $30,000 acquisitive painting award and biennial exhibition features over 40 works by some of Australia’s leading and emerging artists. On display at the Geelong Gallery until 23 November 2014.

Silo Art -- Victoria Australia - Benalla Gallery July 2019
Silo Art in this great Country Victoria - Also the Benalla Art gallery for lunch and a stop to see some of our great southland. The more I see the more know there is more to see.
Touring lands all over and this year thoroughly enjoying home. Touring this city and over the state of Victoria. The Aussie lands and bush of Victoria just gives a peacefulness I can get lost in. Australia is a great amazing place to share, live and play. The music Slovak radio symphony orchestra. I absolutely loved the Silo art projects and the information. Got some new art for my walls as well, the streets of Benalla and their skate park is also part of the adventure. The huge face on the wall and the left eye of the face is a reflective work of art in itself. Yeah!
