The Brihadeeswara temple, popularly known as Big Temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and was constructed in 1010 A.D. It is also known as Rajarajeswara Temple in honor of the Tamil King Raja Raja Chola, who built it. The temple has some amazing features: 216 feet main tower (vimana), a 16 feet monolithic bull (nandhi), a 13 feet lingam, and the apex stone on the tower weighing 80 tons.
Also sometimes called Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Periya Kovil, the temple was also used for storing the King's treasures. For this reason, the temple has been heavily fortified and there is also a moat around it. There are thousands of Hindu mythological idols all over this temple. There are also multiple towers and smaller structures inside, for various purposes.

The Peruvudaiyar Kovil (Tamil: தஞ்சைப் பெருவுடையார் கோயில்) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva that is located in the city of Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is an important example of Tamil architecture achieved during the Chola dynasty. It is also known as Periya Kovil, Brihadeshwara Temple, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajeswaram, It is one of the largest temples in India and one of India's most prized architectural sites. Built by emperor Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010 AD, Peruvudaiyaar Temple, also popularly known as the 'Big Temple', turned 1000 years old in 2010. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Great Living Chola Temples.
Thanjavur Periya Kovil stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. The vimanam (or temple tower) is 216 ft (66 m) high[6] and is among the tallest of its kind in the world. The Kumbam (Kalasha or Chikharam, the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) of the temple is carved out of a single rock and it weighs around 80 tons. There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock, at the entrance measuring about 16 feet long and 13 feet high. The entire temple structure is made out of granite, the nearest sources of which are close to Tiruchirappalli, about 60 km to the west of Thanjavur. The temple is the most visited tourist attraction in Thanjavur and the state alike.

Thanjavur Brihadeeswara Temple | Sadhguru
Sadhguru speaks of the history behind the Brihadeeswara temple in Thanjavur (also known as the Tanjore Big Temple) and its extraordinary architecture. Built over a millennium ago by Rajaraja Chola, the immense temple is a masterpiece of architecture. But something went wrong during the consecration of the Brihadeeswara temple. Sadhguru explains why the need to build the adjacent Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple arose. What was missing in the first temple?

Transcript:
In the… In the last two days I have had the opportunity of being in two different places of two different kinds, but with the same intention but two different kinds. I was at the Thanjavur temple and yesterday I was also at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram. All of you have seen both the places? Have you? No? So Thanjavur is a temple where externally they managed to build a magnificent temple of phenomenal beauty and proportion, a thousand years ago, when there were no machines, there were no cranes, when there were no vehicles to transport huge rocks that were necessary to build this temple. All by the dint of man’s effort; it’s not a simple effort if you… if you want to understand what kind of effort, I’ll give you a simple project. Now we’re building the Adi Yogi Alayam. So I want the rock which is in the Spandha Hall to be shifted to the Adi Yogi Alayam. I want you to do it all of you together. No machines. You know the rock? Then you will understand what it is; because that’s what they did. They say the rock that was used to make the linga was brought from Saurashtra, in Gujarat, from the banks of Narmada, weighing almost 250 tonnes of raw stone, crossing Vindhyachal. No trucks. I want you to just imagine what kind of people are these? What was in their heart to propel them into such an almost impossible acts. So after all that effort, they built a magnificent temple but the core of the temple failed, they could not consecrate the linga as they wanted. It did not work.
So even today, people believe misfortune will come upon them by going to this temple. You know, it’s common knowledge, people think you will come to misfortune if you go to Thanjavur temple, which is not wholly correct but partially correct, because it’s a kind of a… a distorted energy form; it did not find completion. So almost 42 years of work and then the very heart of it failed upon them. So Raja Raja Cholan who attempted this… The only intention of building such a magnificent structure is to see that generations of people will benefit, that it will leave an impact on people that it will be an uplifting experience for generations of people to come. When it did not happen, I can imagine his distress and pain of that wasted effort; not just of the individual effort but thousands and thousands of people would have worked for it, they would have emptied the state’s coffers, probably they fought battles to bring in the necessary resource and in the end did not find completion.
So his son probably wanting to bring some peace to his dead father, he built an exact replica of that temple but he did not have the courage to attempt the same scale probably for practical purposes. He brought down the size considerably, attempted similar thing, trying to do it in a much faster time span. So making it into not so glorious work of art but functionally as good. So the temple structure did not turn out as it should have. They piled up rock and built it, structurally it’s good but in terms of aesthetics they could not match Thanjavur temple, but they managed to consecrate the linga.

Got a glimpse of the great Lingam at Brihadeeswara temple in Thanjavur, India. An amazing sight because the Lingam is over 13 feet tall from the ground above. There is another 13 feet of Lingam buried under the ground to make a strong foundation. The temple, also called as Peruvudaiyar Kovil, is an architectural masterpiece built by Raja Raja Chola I .
It is interesting to note that the Sanctum Sanctorum's doorway is smaller than the Lingam. This has spawned theories that the Lingam was built first and the tower (Vimana) was built around it. However, my research shows a simple technique that the Lingam was placed inside after the construction of the temple.

Classical Dance at Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur
On our visit to the Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple (27 Jan 2012), we got an opportunity to witness this dance troupe performing Bharathanatyam. It was a hot, sunny noon and we were having trouble walking barefoot. Full credits to these dancers who so passionately and expressively performed under that hot sun, and made us too forget the burns. We were so lucky to witness their amazing performance... :)
Brihadeeswarar Temple Thanjavur India
History of Thanjavur throws light on the important historical and chronological events that had an impact on the social, political and cultural scenario during the ancient times. Thanjavur has been the cradle of civilization during the traditional period. The ancient city of Thanjavur rose to prominence in the 12th and 13th centuries under the able rulers of the Chola dynasty.
Under the patronage of the Chola kings, Thanjavur flourished in the fields of art, literature and architecture. Among the mighty rulers of the Chola dynasty, Karikala and Koccengan were the most successful administrators who helped in the development of Sangam Literature. The rulers of the Chola dynasty constructed beautiful temples and monuments that added to the grandeur of Thanjavur.
Vijayyalaya was another prominent ruler of the Chola dynasty who further conquered new territories and expanded the province of Thanjavur. Rajaraja I was the most successful ruler of the Cholas who was a brilliant administrator and had erected the famous Rajarajeshwara Temple. However during the period of 1120 to 1163, the Cholas lost power and the Pandya kings gained importance.
After a short rule of the Pandya rulers, the reins of administration of Thanjavur went to the hands of the Muslim rulers. During the 14th century, the Vijaynagar rulers took over the administration of the ancient city that lasted till the 17th century. The Marattas ruled over Thanjavur for a short time span.
Thanjavur was ultimately taken over by the British rulers by the Treaty of 1799. The history of the ancient city provides information about Thanjavur during the ancient period.
