Mr and Mrs Johns visit with their grandchild - Sunshine 3020
The managers of the Sunshine Swimming Pool visited us with their young grandchild in 1975. The Sunshine Pool Main Entrance can be seen in the background. In the video you can see my twin sister (left) followed my me, my mother, Mr Johns and Mrs Johns holding the baby.
Also notice in the background:

Emerge in Brimbank 2014
“Emerge is about social cohesion, it’s also about sharing, it’s about learning from each other, we look forward to this every year because there is so much amazing talent out here.”
– Jill Morgan AM, CEO, Multicultural Arts Victoria.
“We also see this as a conveyor belt for some of these young people. They may not all go on to be famous in their chosen arts but it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase what they have, to develop their confidence and self-esteem and then again to contribute in society in any way that they choose to.”
– Damir Lendich, Brimbank Youth Services Coordinator.
Normally there are young kids’ events or events just for older people, but Emerge in Brimbank mixes it up - it brings us together, we have our parents and uncles here and it’s pretty fun.
– Fostin Nshimirimana, musician (The Movement).
“One of the really important things that Multicultural Arts [Victoria] does is discover new talent within the community and new leaders within the many communities where we do Emerge. Emerge is about supporting refugee and new and emerging communities and acknowledging the leadership that has evolved over a period of time.”
– Jill Morgan AM, CEO, Multicultural Arts Victoria.
Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) in partnership with Brimbank City Council unleashed the third Emerge in Brimbank FREE family-friendly festival featuring a jam-packed program of local new and emerging talent ranging from live music, fashion, dance and The Westside Talent Quest on Sunday 16 November, 1-6pm at the Errington Community Centre, St Albans in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The City of Brimbank has developed into one of the most culturally diverse municipalities in Australia, with 43.4% of the residents born overseas and 53.7% speaking a language other than English. Brimbank also boasts a larger percentage of youths than the Melbourne average. MAV has worked directly with the community over the past three years uncovering the municipality’s top diverse new talent for the festival – giving Brimbank’s families, young and old, the opportunity to connect and celebrate their diverse cultural pride.
The festival featured singer/songwriter and participant in Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Visible Music Mentoring Program TinaGee, a special showcase of musicians from Brimbank Youth Services’ Loose Studios and hip hop local heroes The Movement. The Burundian Youth Dancers, local West African hip-hop artist T-Bone and a pacific inspired dance performance by Fipe also got people up and dancing.
Visitors caught some of the best designs from local talent with a fashion parade by Maima and Adhieu, and other brilliant young artists and artist groups on stage including: Culture Queens, Rap3021, Hip Hop Girls, Young Ezy, Special Crew, Young Bwizzi and Young G-Storm, Fredrick Kpakpo, and Zero Degrees.
The Westside Talent Contest began at 3pm where top talent from Brimbank had the opportunity to show the crowd what they had - whether it was dance or music of any style. The three high calibre judges entrusted with the difficult task of choosing the best crew, best male and best female had their work cut out for them!
Produced by Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) in partnership with local governments, Emerge Festival is presented annually in different locations around Victoria to celebrate and acknowledge the important contributions of local newly arrived refugee and emerging multicultural communities. The festival is an outcome of MAV’s Emerge Cultural Hubs program which aims at empowering and creating connections for artists and communities from refugee backgrounds.
Supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria, Brimbank City Council, Brimbank Youth Services, and the Scanlon Foundation.

A fresh start for a forgotten laneway | City of Melbourne
This year, as part of our National Reconciliation Week celebrations, City of Melbourne worked with talented students from St Joseph’s Flexible Learning Centre and local street artists from The Blender Studios to design a new mural for one of our unadorned laneways.
From 1 to 3 June, Flinders Court became a hive of creative activity as young people from different backgrounds came together for a positive cause – to reinstate pride in this plain lane.
The project drew on urban design principals relating to improved safety through environmental design and local community partnerships.
Now the space is transformed by the artwork, making it a more vibrant, welcoming place for people to pass through.
