Discovering Bristol’s Pirate Past - Bristol Quayside
We have visited Bristol in the South West of England a number of times and despite being a frequent visitor to the city it is surprising how many places we just ignore and walk past.
This time I (Mr W) took some time and tried the free ‘Bristol Quayside Adventure’ audio tour which you can find at
Just to confirm this is NOT a sponsored video, this was my own little trip.
There are also a number of other audio tours about Bristol which guide you through the history of the city.
The tour I chose takes you back to Bristol’s pirate past around the old city and harbour with stories about Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, the real Robinson Crusoe and the privateers of 18th century Bristol.
The Bristol audio tours take about 1 to 2 hours to complete depending on how long you stop and are definitely worth giving a go.
The main stops on the Bristol Quayside Walk:
1:40 The Merchants Venturers Almshouses, King Street
2:44 The Theatre Royal, King Street
3:04 The Llandoger Trow
4:07 Welsh Back
4:49 Queen Square
6:01 Woodes Rogers, Merchant and Privateer
6:51 The Hole in the Wall pub
7:50 Redcliffe Caves
8:46 The Ostrich Inn
9:01 Bristol Harbour

Bristol's Waterfront. Bristol, England, UK.
Bristol's Waterfront. Bristol, England, UK.
It's the start of another adventure for Imo and Izzy. We start by heading for Bristol Temple Meads Rail Station and take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful and fascinating Bristol Harbour Waterfront. There's lots to see, including Imo's favourite crane!
This is one of those vlogs that got split into two as it was such a long day with so much to see. There will be a subsequent vlog all about our experience in the science museum - We The Curious (formerly knows as @Bristol). Look out for that one!
We had a fantastic day. Thank you so much for joining us.
Imo xxx
Here's a Wiki link if you'd like to find out more about this history of this beautiful harbour area:

I'm Imo and she's Izzy. We love getting out and about and exploring South Wales and beyond.
We're a home-schooling/home-educating family of two based in the UK dealing with the daily challenges of managing Izzy's severe, chronic eczema and her education. Our resourcefulness is tested on a daily basis but we'd love to share our little triumphs and discoveries with you as we go along.
I will always write closed captions in UK English for my vlogs, not only to make them more accessible in general but also to create a useful resource for advanced learners of the English language who may enjoy regular bursts of pseudo-immersion in English in a narrative context with the additional benefit of corresponding on-screen text.
These videos will not generally feature background music making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x

Drive around Bristol Centre to Check Out British Restaurants
With our Australian cousins due to make a flying visit to Bristol as part of their extensive tour of the UK, and wishing to meet up with us for an evening meal during their visit, we felt it would be most appropriate to take them to a Traditional British Restaurant.
In deciding which venue would be most suitable when they visit, we decided to make a tour of some of our favourite local haunts, starting with the Hole in the Wall in the centre of Bristol, and after checking out the numerous restaurants, cafes and other eateries along the Harbourside and on the city centre, make our way back to some of our favourite restaurants near where we live.
The Hole in the Wall was our first choice because it’s near the City Centre, the building itself is c1746, and when we went there years ago was a very Traditional British Restaurant. However, on our revisit, although the menu is still ‘British’ the seating (at least down stairs) was more ‘casual’ (reclining), more suited to relaxed ‘pub’ socialising than sitting up at the table for a 2 hour three course meal.
When we parked up at the Harbourside to check out the vast number of eateries along the waterfront, most cater for ‘international’ taste, and the one place we did find that does British Food, the ‘Slug and Lettuce’ (Cocktail Bar on the Harbourside) the building was too modern e.g. clinical, with no olde British atmosphere.
Moving onto the City Centre, we did spot the Drawbridge (next to the famous Hippodrome Theatre), a pub that we’ve used before, and which does excellent Traditional British ‘Pub Grub’, which could possibly be a good choice; but we concluded that being a popular pub on the City Centre it might be too busy, and noisy, to be difficult to enjoy a quiet chat with family and friends over a meal.
Therefore, we headed out for the ‘Snuff Mill’ Harvester Restaurant in Frenchay, Bristol (just 10 minutes from where we live). It’s a favourite haunt of ours, and very Traditional British Food, in a Traditional British setting; including the indoor fishpond in the middle of the restaurant.

Traditional 'Bristol' Pubs - England
A pub, or public house, is an establishment licensed to sell alcoholic drinks, which traditionally include beer, ale and cider. It is a relaxed, social drinking establishment and a prominent part of British,[1][2] Irish, Breton,[3] New Zealand, Canadian, South African and Australian cultures.[4] In many places, especially in villages, a pub is the focal point of the community. In his 17th century diary Samuel Pepys described the pub as the heart of England.[5]
Pubs can be traced back to Roman taverns,[6] through the Anglo-Saxon alehouse to the development of the tied house system in the 19th century. In 1393, King Richard II of England introduced legislation that pubs had to display a sign outdoors to make them easily visible for passing ale tasters who would assess the quality of ale sold.[7] Most pubs focus on offering beers, ales and similar drinks. As well, pubs often sell wines, spirits, and soft drinks, meals and snacks. The owner, tenant or manager (licensee) is known as the pub landlord or publican. Referred to as their local by regulars, pubs are typically chosen for their proximity to home or work, the availability of a particular beer or ale or a good selection, good food, a social atmosphere, the presence of friends and acquaintances, and the availability of recreational activities such as a darts team, a skittles team, and a pool or snooker table. The pub quiz was established in the UK in the 1970s.[8]
Bristol:
Bristol is a city and county[4] in South West England with a population of 454,200[5] in 2016. The district has the 10th-largest population in England.[6] According to data from 2015, the city itself is the 8th-largest by population in the UK.[7] The city borders North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, with the cities of Bath and Gloucester to the south-east and north-east, respectively.
Iron Age hill forts and Roman villas were built near the confluence of the rivers Frome and Avon, and around the beginning of the 11th century the settlement was known as Brycgstow (Old English the place at the bridge). Bristol received a royal charter in 1155 and was historically divided between Gloucestershire and Somerset until 1373, when it became a county of itself. From the 13th to the 18th century, Bristol was among the top three English cities after London in tax receipts. Bristol was surpassed by the rapid rise of Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool in the Industrial Revolution.
Bristol was a starting place for early voyages of exploration to the New World. On a ship out of Bristol in 1497 John Cabot, a Venetian, became the first European since the Vikings to land on mainland North America. In 1499 William Weston, a Bristol merchant, was the first Englishman to lead an exploration to North America. At the height of the Bristol slave trade, from 1700 to 1807, more than 2,000 slave ships carried an estimated 500,000 people from Africa to slavery in the Americas. The Port of Bristol has since moved from Bristol Harbour in the city centre to the Severn Estuary at Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Dock....

Heading towards 'Broadmead Shopping Centre' - Bristol, UK
Shopping:
A retailer or a shop is a business that presents a selection of goods and offers to trade or sell them to customers for money or other goods. Shopping is an activity in which a customer browses the available goods or services presented by one or more retailers with the intent to purchase a suitable selection of them. In some contexts it may be considered a leisure activity as well as an economic one.
In modern days customer focus is more transferred towards online shopping; worldwide people order products from different regions and online retailers deliver their products to their homes, offices or wherever they want. The B2C (business to consumer) process has made it easy for consumers to select any product online from a retailer's website and have it delivered to the consumer relatively quickly. The consumer does not need to consume his energy by going out to the stores and saves his time and cost of travelling.
BROADMEAD:
The name of the street was first recorded in 1383 as Brodemede. The name either means broad meadow or refers to brodemedes, a type of woollen cloth woven only in Bristol.[1]
The area lay just to the north of the town walls of the historic Bristol. In about 1227 Blackfriars was founded as a Dominican priory in the area. After the dissolution of the monasteries the site had various secular uses, and in 1749 became the location of a Quaker meeting house, now known as Quakers Friars. In 1739 John Wesley built his Methodist chapel, known as the New Room, in the street. Shops were also built in the area. In the 18th century a covered arcade was built between Horsefair and Broadmead, which still survives.
When the old shopping district of Corn Street and Wine Street was heavily damaged in the Bristol Blitz, it was decided to redevelop the Broadmead area as the main shopping district of the city. Rebuilding began in 1950. The existing street, which ran between Union Street and Merchant Street, was extended north to include the former Rosemary Street.[2] Like most 1950s buildings in Britain, affordable and architecturally interesting utilitarian buildings form the bulk of the Broadmead area. In the 1980s some of these were destroyed to make way for the Galleries shopping centre, which is a three level covered street. Broadmead and several of the surrounding streets were pedestrianised.
Broadmead today:
Broadmead has now finished regeneration. The shopping area has been extended over the central ring road to produce a new shopping centre, Cabot Circus, which opened in September 2008. This area had been named Merchants Quarter but in April 2006 the name was abandoned after a campaign claiming the name was offensive because it was the Bristol Merchant Venturers who dealt in the trade of African slaves.
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico.
