UK: LONDON: BIGGEST EVER SALE OF VINTAGE FILM POSTERS
English/Nat
Auctioneers Christie's is holding the biggest ever sale of vintage film posters.
They include rare posters of Marilyn Monroe and classic films by Walt Disney, some valued at up to 20,000 pounds.
The discreet, oak-panelled showrooms of auctioneers Christie's usually house valuable paintings and other treasures from the art world.
As from today Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Lawrence of Arabia are just a few of the Hollywood greats which will also be lining the walls.
Over 500 classic film posters go under the hammer next Thursday in London. The auction timed to mark 100 years of cinema, includes rare exhibits from every genre in celluloid history.
Prices start at around 200 pounds with some posters expected to fetch up to 20,000 pounds. So what are the qualities that prospective buyers look for - which also push up the price of these posters?
SOUNDBITE:
There are a few factors, one of them is the title, whether it's a famous title or a cult title and who the film has in it. The third thing is what the poster actually looks like - whether it depicts a certain scene, famous scene from the film or not, and rarity.
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Nourmand, Christie's film poster consultant
Among the classics on display - a selection of posters from films which featured Hollywood sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe. They include some of Monroe's most famous films, such as The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot. The British poster for this film contains the famous flying skirt image of Marilyn standing above a subway grate - and it's selling for between 400-600.
And to the surprise of Christie's regular customers, a life-size Marilyn was at the showroom to re-enact one of the most memorable scenes of Monroe's film career.
25-year old Pauline Bailey, a former accounts clerk from south London, now earns a living as a full-time Marilyn Monroe lookalike and impersonator.
SOUNDBITE:
I'm a fan of Marilyn's but I'm more a fan of her, the real person, rather than her movies. I like her movies but....so when I actually do my job as Marilyn I'm always sort of thinking about Marilyn in my head like a little movie, I don't actually practise in front of the mirror like some people might think because I just I couldn't do that, I'd just be laughing if I had to do that.
SUPER CAPTION: Pauline Bailey - Marilyn Monroe lookalike
And just to prove that she knows her subject inside out, Pauline has been training her vocal chords to get the songs right too!
SOUNDBITE: (Song)
I want to be loved by you....
SUPER CAPTION: Pauline Bailey - Marilyn Monroe lookalike
On sale at next Thursday's auction are posters of some of cinema's all-time greats: Casablanca, Citizen Kane, King Kong and My Fair Lady.
And those expected to fetch the highest bids? Offers for Alice's Spooky Adventure start at £20,000. One of the last films ever to be animated by Walt Disney personally, the poster is the only known surviving copy and was in the personal collection of Alice star, Virginia Davis for almost 70 years.
The French poster of Shanghai Express, the 1932 film starring Marlene Dietrich is another expected to go for around £10,000. So who would be prepared to pay these prices for old film posters?
SOUNDBITE:
All sorts of people, movie buffs, film, directors, designers, people like you - everyone!
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Nourmand, Christie's film poster consultant
Thanks to cinema enthusiasts and distributors around the world, these vintage posters will now find a permanent home after Christie's.

Inside Claudia Schiffer and Matthew Vaughn's Mansion | Celebrity Homes | Architectural Digest
Architectural Digest goes inside the English mansion of supermodel Claudia Schiffer and film director/producer Matthew Vaughn for this episode of Celebrity Homes.
Claudia Schiffer—member of the original supermodel club, iconic Guess? girl, magazine-cover star times a thousand, and savvy businesswoman—is well versed at navigating runways. So 15 years ago, when the Teutonic bombshell and her now husband, English film director Matthew Vaughn, turned into a half-mile-long driveway—unannounced and on a whim—to inquire whether the owners might consider selling the historic house at the end of it, Schiffer naturally won over her audience. Months later, the couple, having closed the deal, were married there in front of 120 guests.
The 14-bedroom Tudor mansion on 530 acres now serves as the full-time residence to them and their three children, Caspar, 14, Clementine, 12, and Cosima, 7, plus a menagerie of dogs, cats, sheep, pig, and tortoise.
It’s said that the 1574 house—built in the shape of an H in honor of King Henry VIII—owes its name to Queen Elizabeth I, who was nonplussed at being served cold ham when she stayed there and thus christened it Coldham Hall. It served as a safe haven for Catholic priests during the Elizabethan purges and still boasts a few priest holes—cubbies below the floorboards—which today make perfect hiding places for the kids. The property was also a meeting point for the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and remained in the original family for some three centuries.
The furniture is a mix of comfortable upholstered pieces, antiques, and family heirlooms.
The walls of nearly every guest bedroom are covered in traditional motifs—tree-of-life fabric in one room, an orchard-print wallpaper in another. One bedroom, per Schiffer’s insistence, was wrapped from floor to ceiling in Galbraith & Paul crimson lotus wallpaper to create a tentlike effect.
If the furnishings lean traditional, the art that fills the walls acts as a wonderful juxtaposition. Avid collectors, Schiffer and Vaughn have amassed an array of impressive works by such contemporary masters as Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, and Candida Höfer. Recent acquisitions are some of David Hockney’s iPad drawings of the English countryside, which Schiffer was attracted to because they “look like they could be on our grounds.” Schiffer began poking around galleries as a young model in Paris living in the Marais.
The study’s walls are covered with Lelièvre fabric and adorned with works by Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha.
Ashkan Sahihi lenticular photos of each child, an Adam Fuss photogram of Cosima when she was a baby, and a pair of Ed Ruscha paintings.
While Coldham Hall initially served as a weekend getaway from London, the family moved there full- time several years ago. These days, after dropping the kids at school (not a single paparazzo in sight), Schiffer and Vaughn retreat to their study with a cup of tea, where they work at desks alongside each other. They often take creative meetings here. In addition to her own projects, which include Claudia Schiffer (Rizzoli), a coffee-table tome on her spectacular three-decade modeling career, coming out next month, Schiffer also acts as an executive producer on her husband’s films. The latest, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is due out this month.
Coldham Hall is purposefully designed to be kid- and animal-proof. Much of the furniture is upholstered in sturdy, practical fabrics like corduroy and moleskin.

London Black Cab TX | Fully Charged
Jonny Smith reviews the all new London Black Cab, the TX Electric Taxi from LEVC, on the coldest day of the year so far and takes it out for a proper test: sitting in traffic in rush hour London and then collecting a jet-lagged Robert Llewellyn from the airport.
This is the first time that LEVC (formerly the London Taxi Company) has created the recognisable ‘black cab’ with electric propulsion. It comes with all sorts of high-end technology, improved safety features and a petrol range extender, allowing it to cover 80 miles on electric only or 400 miles when combined with the petrol range extender. Equally important, this new model seems like it could be a boon for taxi drivers, their wallets and their health, especially with inner-city clean air regulations becoming more important.

I WENT TO THE BEST REVIEWED NAIL SALON IN MY CITY !!! OMG
I recently went to the best-reviewed nail salon in LA and decided to bring you all along. This place that I found on yelp has so many reviews that I just couldn't resist and go check it out myself. It wasn't like a fancy high-end Nail salon as you can see in the video but they had very good customer service and Nail artist or at least my nail technician was very experienced and knew the latest nail trend and designs. I have kept the place anonymous for many reasons but if there are lots of you who want to go there then I might post the name of the salon. Gah, It's so hard to type with my new sets. I probably should have made them a bit shorter. OK I am going to end this now.

Winter dinghy ride to The Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay, B.C. [Vancouver Island, CA]
After several years of making quick 1-day stops in Brentwood Bay, BC at the lovely Brentwood Bay Resort & Marina, we finally came for a little while longer to enjoy more of what this area has to offer.
The biggest attraction is by far the Butchart Gardens and it's only a short dinghy ride from our slip. It's a quick walk as well, but when the weather in December is nice enough to launch the dinghy WHY NOT???
If you've not been to this beautiful outdoors oasis of gardens it's worth a trip...a summer trip! It was very nice in the winter, but we can't imagine how gorgeous these grounds must be when everything is in full bloom.
Enjoy!
