Mopion island - Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Supposedly the smallest island in the Caribbean, Mopion is more of a cay (a low inlet mainly composed of coral or sand) and its size depends on the tides. But its iconic umbrella is never quite submerged.
The very first name of the island seems to have been Morpion, with an R, “morpion” being the French word for “pubic louse.” But over time it appears the R has been removed according to more common Caribbean speech patterns. Mopion is part of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines island chain and is considered by many to be a sort of geographical mascot for the whole area. It’s easy to see why.
A pure sandy beach surrounded by a lovely underwater reef, Mopion is a quiet gem in the middle of turquoise waters. At just 100 feet (30 meters) long or so (depending on the tides), the small sandbar is so low that a thatch umbrella was built on it for the sailors to spot from a distance to avoid dashing their vessels on the reef. The straw parasol is also the only protection against the sun for anyone marooned, intentionally or otherwise on the idyllic little piece of land. Visitors are also known to leave their mark carved into the trunk of the umbrella.

2010-12 Island Transport - St Vincent.MOV
We took island transport from Kingstown up the leeward side of St. Vincent to Richmond Beach, then hiked up the mountain to Dark View Falls. Island transport is fun, interesting, and much more exciting than thrill rides at your average amusement park. 15 or 16 people are squeezed into a 10-person van, the music was loud, the driver excellent, and the experience fascinating. But this means of travel is definitely not for the feint-of-heart!

Inside Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds' £20,000-a-week Caribbean holiday villa
Boris Johnson vowed last week to lead a 'People's Government'. But before he gets started, he's having a break at a £20,000-a-week Caribbean villa to mark his thumping election victory. The Sun newspaper has found the luxury resort on the island of Mustique where the Prime Minister and his girlfriend, the environmental campaigner Carrie Symonds, are seeing in the New Year. The Moroccan-style stone villa has six double bedrooms, three private swimming pools, two bars, a library and four dedicated staff - a butler, chef, gardener and housekeeper. - a haunt of celebs and the royal family. Created by Swedish architect Arne Hasselqvist in the 1970s, the sumptous Oceanus villa is described as perfect for large families and house parties by its owner. A brochure obtained by the newspaper says: The open air plan provides the perfect balance of indoor and outdoor living spaces. Multiple sunset decks and lounge areas with seven lighted water features make the property well suited for entertaining. “This tranquil villa rests harmoniously on a hilltop overlooking Britannia Bay, which offers perfect trade wind breezes and panoramic views of the surrounding Caribbean and lush landscape of the island.” It is understood the Prime Minister and his girlfriend Ms Symonds paid for their own British Airways flights. But it is not clear who is picking up the tab for his stay with the Von Bismark family – who are descended from the first German chancellor Otto Von Bismark. The Sun reports that Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds have arrived at Mustique on Boxing Day after arriving on a nearby island and taking a small plane the final leg of the way. It marks a dramatic break from staycationing Tory PMs - and instead harks back to Tony Blair's infamously luxurious getaways, which included staying in Sir Cliff Richard's Barbados holiday home in 2003. Tory austerity architect David Cameron was careful to be photographed in Cornwall while Theresa May took low-key walking holidays in Wales, northern Italy and Switzerland. It also appears to mark a break from the Tory government's own carefully-crafted policy to appear humble after winning a clutch of northern Labour heartland seats which had never before turned blue. Last week Boris Johnson - who once described his £250,000 columnist's salary as chicken feed - banned ministers from the World Economic Forum in Davos in a bid to shed the Tories' reputation as the party of billionaires. And he declared his 'People's government' would be led by a 'People's Cabinet'. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn does also take Transatlantic holidays - but for a different reason. He visits his wife Laura Alvarez's family in Mexico. Known for its white-sand beaches, the exclusive island of Mustique in the archipelago nation of St Vincent and the Grenadines is a favourite of the rich and famous with Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger owning land there. Bought for £45,000 in 1958 by the aristocrat Lord Glenconner, it was turn
