Nikko, British Embassy Villa Memorial Park 日光 旧英国大使館別荘
Nikko’s British Embassy Villa Memorial Park is a lakeside park with a lodge that had been a private summerhouse of a British diplomat, Ernest Satow.
The view from the house is just splendid. You get beautiful scenery of Lake Chuzenji surrounded by Nikko’s peaceful mountains. At the tearoom on the second floor, they serve British tea, jam and scones, and traditional chocolate cakes.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.
My blog is Japan Silhouette :

British Embassy Open House 2018
Every year at around this time, the Embassies of the European Union in Washington DC opens their doors to the public. Many Embassies participate in this - Estonia, Germany, France, Belgium and of course, the United Kingdom.
On Saturday I rode my mountain bike to the Embassy of the United Kingdom on Massachusetts avenue to partake in everything that is British offered at the British Embassy. British food, British drinks, British motorcars and many vendors that offer British merchandise. I even got to tour the official residence of the British Ambassador and his family, which is usually closed to the general public, but for one day a year they open their doors so that the people may be able to wonder in awe at the elegance and pageantry of the British Ambassador's residence.

I am full of emotion. As they fought each other in the war, they are basically equal in the war. I think they went through the same emotion and what is most important is that they could share their emotion between them.

STORYLINE:
Two men who fought on opposite sides during the Battle of Kohima were reunited more than 70 years later at the British embassy in Tokyo on Thursday.
Ninety-four-year-old Roy Welland from Colchester, UK, and Taiji Urayama, 93, took part in the fierce battle that took place in northern India in 1944.
At the time, Welland served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and Urayama in the 31st Regiment Mountain Artillery of the Imperial Japanese army.
While the men were mostly quiet, Urayama's daughter, Akiko McDonald, said she was full of emotion as Thursday's reunion took place.
McDonald has been working for the reconciliation of UK and Japanese veterans as chair of the Burma Campaign Society and organised the meeting.
Welland was in Tokyo for a reconciliation programme between the two countries.
Japan invites American and Australian former prisoners of war under similar friendship programmes.
Also present at Thursday's reunion was Mikio Kinoshita, a former sergeant of the 5th Regiment, Railway Construction Army, involved in putting the Burma Railway, known as the Death Railway, across the border of Thailand and Burma at that time.

A Diplomat in Japan - A Clash of Cultures
This video clip depicts the Namamugi Incident of 1862. It is from the first part of a documentary drama about the life of Sir Ernest Satow (1843-1929). Satow spent about 25 years in total working in Japan and was the most distinguished diplomat Britain has ever had in the Far East. His 'A Diplomat in Japan' (first published in 1921) is a precious and unique account of the end of the Shogunate (Bakumatsu) and beginning of the Meiji period in Japan. It is based mainly on Satow's diaries from 1862 to 1869, and is still read by many people in paperback editions which continue to appear even today.
Satow retired in 1906 from his post as Minister (then the top British diplomat) in China. He returned to England and lived at Ottery St. Mary in Devon until his death in 1929. During this period he not only had 'A Diplomat in Japan' published but also in 1917 a major guidebook to diplomacy titled 'A Guide to Diplomatic Practice' which was republished in its sixth edition as 'Satow's Diplomatic Practice' by Oxford University Press in 2009. For more about Ernest Satow see
