British House Yokohama
British House Yokohama
Yokohama narrow tiny house breathes & attracts local nature
On a site 3.3 meters wide and 10 meters deep, architect Takeshi Hosaka planned a dream home for himself and his wife Megumi. Leaving the ceiling open to the sky, the main space of the home “is not inside and is not outside”. A large tree casts shadows of the sun and moonlight on the wall, birds and rain enter the space and grasshoppers lay eggs here.
Takeshi and Megumi spend most of their time in the open air- only closing the sliding glass walls only during winter. Without the glass, there’s no wall to separate the couple from the elements and a sheer drop to the first floor.
Space in the 38 square meter home is hyper-maximized: the kitchen is wide enough for a counter and a person; the bedroom fits only a futon which folds up during the day; and the bathroom door hits the toilet and doesn’t close all the way. All this is irrelevant when life takes place in a living space with an infinity ceiling and walls.

House as membrane: blends with garden & protects from street
When a Yokohama couple asked architect Takeshi Hosaka to design a home “in which we feel as if we are outdoors”, Hosaka took a triangular lot and used the geometry to trap a garden inside each room.
All of Hosaka’s designs play with the idea of homes as separate from nature: his “Inside Out” leaves everything open for a couple and their 2 cats; and his own “Love House” dances with the indoor tree that dwarfs the tiny space. His “Garden House”, designed for a Tokyo advertising executive seeking a home as refuge, is more of a membrane than a home; it’s highly porous with the garden and nearly impermeable to the street.

Why Japan's Homeless are Different from North America's (Part 1)
One day while walking around Shinjuku, a major hub for government and business in Tokyo, Japan, I noticed a shelter built by a homeless man. It looked semi-permanent, but more importantly, had solar panels on it. I thought this was very different than the homeless I encountered in my former city of Vancouver, Canada, so I started to investigate homelessness in Japan.
I was lucky enough to interview Professor Tom Gill, who has researched homelessness and other societal issues in Japan for many years.
This is part 1 of a series of videos I'm making about the homeless in Japan. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave in the comments. Thanks for watching.

Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen)
Opened in 1962 at the former site of the British soldiers' barracks. The lookout and benches facing the ocean offer a full view of Yokohama port. A perfect place for viewing the Yokohama Bay Bridge at night. The forest on the north side was formerly a French military garrison, and is now called the French Mountain area. The land was handed over to Yokohama City in 1971. The same arch as in the central market of Paris stands in front. Also includes the British House, the Yamate 111 Ban-Kan, the Osaragi Jiro Memorial Hall and the Kanagawa Museum of Modern Literature. Also famous for the roses that are in full bloom in the spring and autumn seasons.

Fractal Kyoto: cube hut as tiny house inside office building
When Tada Masaharu and Shojiro Endo began renting a crumbling machiya (a traditional townhouse typical of Kyoto, Japan), they wanted to preserve the wooden structure for their architecture and design practices while carving out a living space for Endo that wouldn’t be obvious to clients. Their solution: they built a 7-square-meter cube hut within the original structure.
Housing Endo’s bed, closet and small kitchen, the cube closes up completely- it’s one wooden window swings shut- so the structure easily passes unnoticed by visitors and clients.
Outside the “home”, the space is all office space divided by the cube. In front of it, there’s a multi-functional reception area which can be converted to extra work space thanks to a table on rollers. Behind the cube, is the main office area with custom, DIY furniture: shelving inspired by Japanese cards, tables with built-in hard drive storage and a concrete sink.
At the back of the office, the duo built sliding shoji-style doors- created without handles so as to appear an all-white wall. When opened, they reveal a backyard garden and the home’s original bathroom.
Masaharu and Endo explain that they would have liked to have restored the machiya to its original condition, but this would have required a bigger budget (beyond what they could afford as renters) and they also wanted to try this mix of old and new.
They did remove a false ceiling to expose the original wooden beams and ceiling. This area has now become a playground for Niko, Endo’s cat, whose home is on top of the cube.

The Yokohama, Japan Wet Shave (Full Experience)
The Yokohama, Japan Shave (Full Experience)
Inspired by HairCut Harry / The Nomad Barber
This is bar none the best place in The Greater Tokyo Area to get a shave, and more than likely in all of Japan. Head barber Maruyama-san really knows what he's doing. I've personally been living in Japan for 13 years and experienced a lot here, but going to Barneys Barber's Shop was on my still yet to do Japan bucket-list for about a year now. Well in September 2016 I finally made the venture out to Yokohama city just for this experience.
If you consider going to the massage parlor soothing, just wait until you get a wet shave here. It is so comforting and carefree. Whatever worries of the day you come in with on your mind I promise you will be shaved off with the cut. That's a note from personal experience.
This is a long, about 24 minute full experience video. I only did short edits where maybe the head barber did actions like going into the side room to get tools, facial products, etc., or transitioning from shaving to rummaging through his supply desk. I hope you enjoy. The next upload will feature my Belgian friend Mathieu Wallez again sitting in the barbers chair getting a different shave from the same barber.

deluxe: London Gap House | euromaxx
British architect Luke Tozer has done something many would have thought impossible: He has squeezed a 185 square-meter home into a lot that is just 2.3 meters wide at one end. Appropriately enough, the L -shaped residence is called Gap House and is located in London's Notting Hill neighborhood. The family home also boasts environmentally-friendly heating and rainwater recycling.

HOW YOU CAN GET A JAPANESE VISA!! | Living and working in Japan
I received a lot of questions about moving to Japan. This is how I got my Japanese Visa application approved so that I am able to live and work in Japan! The Visa that I am currently on is the Working Holiday Visa from the UK. This Japan Visa is available in several countries including Australia, Canada and Ireland and you DO NOT have to have a degree to obtain it. This means that you can live, work and explore Japan without a degree! Certain countries require a Japan Visa renewal and extension so check with your embassy!
In this video I explain the Visa application process and give you tips to get your Visa approved. These tips are transferable across many different types of Japanese Visas.
If you are determined to live in Japan and work in Japan as a foreigner I also cover several other Japon Visas that you can apply for including the Japanese Student Visa, the Humanities Visa and the Entertainment Visa.
I will be making a follow up video about finding work in Japan on a Student or Working Holiday Visa.
