The red squirrel is our native squirrel. The grey squirrel shouldn't be here. It was only introduced 125 years ago from North America. Unfortunately ever since the grey squirrel has been here, the red squirrel has been in decline and so because they are rare - vary rare indeed in the south, we thought it would be a wonderful emblem, our logo if you like, so that's why we chose the red squirrel. They're such iconic little creatures. It's Beatrix Potter's 'Squirrel Nutkin.'

The red squirrel is a delicate little creature and it evolved through time to live on the seeds from pine cones, so that's why you find them up in the pine forests. Living in deciduous woodland, which is what this is, deciduous woodland, it's much more difficult for them (than grey squirrels), because they are selective feeders.

In the winter time they have to rely on stored hazelnuts and beech nuts and things like that. They cannot eat acorns. Grey squirrels can live on acorns. Red Squirrels, they can't digest them. They can eat them, but they can't digest them. They don't have the enzyme in their gut which digests them, so it's wasted.

This is a little red squirrel which I'm currently looking after, currently rearing. It was found abandoned by its mother, so we've taken it away to hopefully see it through and look after it.

With the red squirrels we have to check them every day, make sure they are ok. We have to feed them obviously, make sure they have their water, any medication they need for that day as well and just make sure they are generally healthy and happy.

If we don't do anything to help then they probably will go extinct from the mainland of this country within twenty years or so. Hopefully we'll still have them in the islands (surrounding the U.K. mainland) and hopefully we'll still have them in the reserves where we're looking after them and we're doing as much as we can to control the grey squirrels, but for truly wild ones, there's not much hope at the moment unless something can be thought of to stop the effects and the spread of the grey squirrels.

British Wildlife Centre - Rolling Man
Yes, we're back in Lingfield and had another great time at the British Wildlife Centre there. Great dedicated owner and keepers and it's always different. You see Judy Dench there sometimes as she's a regular visitor. The star this time though, was Toby the badger having a bath and playing air guitar with his leg. There were also polecat babies I managed to capture as well as many baby deer. A great day and I'd definitely recommend it. The music 'Rolling Man' is part of the 7 months we spent recording at the Blue Box Studio in London in 2011 of which this was the very last track we did just around the beginning of December. You'll have to excuse the singing, but someone has to do it. It's a fun track I wrote way back.
British Wildlife Centre August 2014
So we're back in Lingfield and you can't be here and ignore a visit to the British Wildlife Centre. This time my film editing later on includes some slow motion of some owls flying and us being accosted by some red squirrels who were brilliant. As for the music it's a live studio session from way back in the olden days in the Blue Box Studios around early 2000 and something.
