Later it was known as the Exchange Street , due to the merchant's exchange being located here. It was also referred to as New England Street , & then officially naned Broad Street in the very early 1700s after an Act was passed by the Legislature for the lay-out of the streets of Bridgetown. Named Broad Street because it was the broadest street in Bridgetown at that time , this stretch was lined with elegant shops , patronised by the merchatile elite & stocked to satisfy the most discriminating of shoppers. This street is Bridgetown's main street , as it stretches directly through the centre of Bridgetown from Cheapside Road to Fairchild Street. Exploring the beauty of Bridgetown, Barbados
Bridgetown, the bustling capital and sole city of Barbados, was named for the native Amerindian bridge, which crossed the mouth of the Constitution River. Today the river, also known as the Careenage, slices Bridgetown in two and is mainly used for small pleasure craft. Mega cruise ships dock at an artificial port to the west of town. Steeped in British colonial history, Bridgetown exudes a distinctly English sensibility with a laidback West Indian feel. Island lovers come here from around the world to browse the duty free shops on Broad Street, frolic in the azure waters of Carlisle Bay, and explore the city's museums. History buffs will also enjoy the Barbados Garrison, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the city's magnificent colonial buildings
For beautiful places in Barbados I'd recommend the following:
Visit Harrison's Cave
Visit Hunte's Gardens
Take a dive on the Atlantis Submarine
Visit Cherry Tree Hill for breath-taking views of the island
Visit Hackleton's Cliff for breath-taking views of the island
Visit St. John's Parish Church
Gun Hill Signal Station is also fantastic
Visit Archer's Bay, River Bay, Crane Beach, Botttom Bay and Rockley Beach.
Hope this helps
Regards
A vacation in Barbados is not complete without exploring the natural beauty that exists in abundance. The landscape of Barbados is dotted with lush gardens, mysterious caves, and a few national parks and reserves thrown in the mix.

The City is approximately 38 square kilometers and is home to 110,000 of the 284,000 Barbadians (or Bajans as they refer to themselves).

This is the section of Broad Street by the Nelson Statue. At the top of Broad Street in the capital city of Bridgetown stands this bronze statue of Admiral Lord Nelson. The statue was erected on 22 March 1813 in the area known as Trafalgar Square , opposite Parliament Buildings. The statue predates Nelson Column in Trafalgar Square in London by nearly 30 years. (Barbados' Trafalgar Square was officially renamed National Heroes Square in April 1999.) This is a great place to take pictures with either the historic Parliament Buildings or picturesqie Careenage as backdrop.
