I took a tour around the Yiwu Industrial Trade City - the largest wholesale market in the world. People come here from every country to buy goods to export. 5.5 million square meters, 7km long, this market is beyond giant. And it's all one interconnected building. I explored it for a day with Collin Abroadcast, a fellow market fanatic. From Christmas decorations to children's toys to hardware and tools, we found a bunch of stuff that blew our minds.

Kristel Smentek: Chinoseries for Beijing: An Eighteenth-Century French Gift to the Emperor of China
Kristel Smentek, Associate Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, speaks about how in 1766 a set of chinoiserie tapestries designed by François Boucher was presented to the Qianlong Emperor on behalf of the French administration.
This lecture examines the circumstances of the gift and the remarkable Sino-French exchange of art objects it initiated.
Kristel Smentek is Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of Architecture at MIT.
Her research interests include rococo art and design, the history of collecting and display, the history of the art market, and the impact of Asian-European exchange on eighteenth-century European art and aesthetic theory. She curated the exhibition Rococo Exotic: French Mounted Porcelains and the Allure of the East for The Frick Collection in 2007 and is the author of articles on the eighteenth-century print market, on the painter Jean-Étienne Liotard, and on the display of Chinese porcelain in eighteenth-century French interiors. She recently published a book about the French collector Pierre-Jean Mariette, Mariette and the Science of the Connoisseur in Eighteenth-Century Europe (2014), and is currently working on a new book project, tentatively titled Objects of Encounter: China in Eighteenth-Century France.

Interlaken, Bern, Thun, Switzerland
Interlaken in the heart of the Alps and Bern, at 8:42 are two of the great destinations of Switzerland presented in this practical guide, along with the historic city of Thun at 25:10 in the travel video.
Please subscribe:
Switzerland playlist Interlaken makes a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful mountains all around the central region of Switzerland, offering many hotels, restaurants and shops, and wonderful train and bus connections to get up to the mountain sites. Tourists have been coming to Interlaken and the area since about 1800 when it was first popularized by some romantic painters and then tourism really increased in the 1890s and early 1900s with the opening of railway service.
Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps. In this movie we’re focusing on how to get the most out of your visit to the town. For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.
A main activity in town is shopping – all sorts of souvenirs for sale, clothing, you can buy some hiking gear. It's a great place for backpacks, for boots, hats, clothing of all kinds, walking sticks and a T-shirt that says Interlaken.
There's not much of a pedestrian zone that's free of automobiles here but they do have one little lane that's for pedestrians. But the rest of town is very friendly for walking around, the sidewalks are wide and there's always things to look at and things to do.
The great meadow forms a major park, beautifully landscaped and kept in a semi-natural state with flowers and trees and the meadow along one side and grand hotels on the other.
If you’re a gambler there is a casino like there is in most Swiss towns and it's an elegant place. It’s part of the Kursal complex which for 100 years has been a cultural center of the city, set in a beautiful park with fountains and flowers.
Another major attraction worth seeing near Interlaken is the city of Bern the political capital of Switzerland and it's just one hour away by train.
The Bern train station is right next to the old town so your walk through the historic zone begins the moment you arrive. The main street proceeds directly from the front of the train station right through the historic center. It's one street about ten blocks long, but it changes name several times. By the station and it's the Spitalgasse, then it becomes the Marktgasse, then the Kramgasse, then the Gerechtigkeitsgasse. Today, it's the main street of Bern, as it has been for centuries. This road is remarkable, not only for the ancient buildings and arcades that cover both sides, but for the spectacular Renaissance fountains down the middle. Today it's a popular shopping street with surprisingly modern shop interiors, and there's a slight curve with a long line of Baroque façades that combine to produce one of Bern's most impressive streetscapes. This Kramgasse and its buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the entire old city of Bern – a very impressive honor that UNESCO has designated all of the historic area as a World Heritage Site.
At the end of town across the river they have their famous bear pits. In recent years the government has greatly expanded this bear habitat to make it really a pleasant place for the bears to live.
Another important building is the Gothic cathedral with the nation's highest church tower at 328 feet, which you may climb for a bird’s eye view of the historic center. Construction of the cathedral began in 1421 in the Gothic style. It is a three-nave basilica without a transept or aisles, 85 m long and 34 m wide – it is quite huge. The walls outside are supported by flying buttresses and the majority of the building is constructed with local sandstone, and bricks were used for the ceiling for the vaults.
On the train ride back to Interlaken it is easy to get off at the picturesque city of Thun and spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the special ambience of this place, with a river running through the middle of the Old Town and a unique two-level sidewalk on the main pedestrian street. Then return to Interlaken and continue our exploration of this great city.
This video is part of a longer series that we're presenting all about Switzerland, including Lucerne, Zürich, Zermatt, Lugano, Locarno, and a lot of beautiful mountaintops scenery to share with you.

Lugano and Gandria in Switzerland’s Ticino
Lugano, in the Ticino district of southern Switzerland on the shores of Lake Lugano, has both a medieval and Mediterranean feeling that you will discover in our in-depth visit, which also brings you to the lakefront villages of Gandria and Morcote.
Please subscribe:
Switzerland playlist
We go by train, boat, on foot and funicolare to show you many great sites including Swiss Miniatur, with small models of Swiss buildings in a park setting, and the Alprose chocolate factory.
The historic center of Lugano is famous for arcades that line both sides of the street forming covered sidewalk areas with a calm and sheltered environment, protecting you from the rain and sun.
This style of columns and arches is reminiscent of Italian architecture -- after all, we are right next to Italy here in Lugano and you also see that feeling of Italy in the piazza, the big open square. The language is Italian and so is much of the lifestyle here in Ticino, which enjoys a magical blend of two cultures, with Swiss efficiency and Italian charm.
You will love how well the pedestrian zone works – peaceful streets with people walking here and there. It is so friendly and sociable, makes for a great atmosphere.
We really enjoyed stopping at this famous gourmet food shop, Gabbani, in business here since 1937 and they've really branched out – they've got a wine shop, a cheese shop, and they even run a small hotel that's ranked number three on Trip Advisor.
This area is also world famous for its chocolates. In fact there's a chocolate factory just outside the city we visit, the Alprose, and you will see how they make their chocolates.
Another feature that makes Lugano so attractive are the hillside streets. It's just so much more interesting than being in a flatland town. They've got staircase streets, they've got gently sloping streets, and it's all for pedestrians. It's a small part of town. It's a section which is goes up the hill alongside the funicular, but it really is a lot of fun to check it out. Some of the restaurants put tables out on the staircase streets. That would be a fine place to eat on a nice day. And even though it's a little bit of work to walk up the steps, it's a very popular retail center.
It's a kind of backbeat neighborhood with some quirky little boutiques and unique shops and artists and craftspeople. You'll run into some real characters here. Custom-made clothing and jewelry a whole variety of fun things to look at.
It's the kind of neighborhood that would be very easy to mess, or you might be easily discouraged if you get to the foot of one of those hills and look up and think oh, no, I don't want to walk up that hill. But really it's not difficult at all. The slope is very gradual – you walk up, you walk down.
We’re also going to take you on a scenic boat ride from Lugano to Gandria, just five miles away. On a day like this it's perfect to sit up on the outdoor deck, or you could sit down below inside. It's very comfortable there as well. We're traveling in the month of May in Switzerland and it's warm and sunny especially because we're in the southern part of the country.
Gandria is truly a magical little village, clinging to the hillside along the shores of Lake Lugano. We will be getting off here and taking a little stroll through the village and finding it is a pedestrian zone. Cars are not allowed in the village itself because the lanes are just much too narrow and steep.
As soon as you get off the boat you can start exploring as we wind our way around these narrow lanes, and bends and turns and twists and discovering – always fun to explore someplace new for the first time.
This is part of our big series of movies about Switzerland taking you to most of the great places. We will bring you to Lucerne and up to Mount Titlis, Mount Rigi, over to Interlaken, up to the Jungfrau. We will see the Shilthorn, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Trummelbach Falls, Grindelwald, Bern, then on to Zermatt, the Matterhorn, yes we will have a look at the Gornergrat, up the Sunnegga, do some hiking, show you the village then on down to Lugano and Locarno in the southern part of Switzerland, the Ticino we also take you to the great city of Zürich. Look for them in our Swiss collection.

Lucerne, Switzerland part 2

Then we walk through the new side of town, with chocolate shops, busy urban neighborhoods, and popular restaurants. There are some good hotels in that section but later we take you to our favorite, the Hotel des Balances, right on the river. You've got to see the
Lion Monument and shop for souvenirs. Lucerne has the largest transportation museum in Switzerland, along the lake just 2 miles from town, with old trains, planes, cars and boats. Then we have a great meal at the Old Swiss House, and some traditional Swiss music and dance at the Stadtkeller, the best show in town.

STORYLINE
Angry South Korean protesters slammed Chinese fishermen as pirates on Tuesday, while President Lee Myung-bak vowed to spend more on policing the country's waters after a Chinese boat captain allegedly stabbed a coast guard officer to death.
During a protest at the Chinese Embassy in Seoul, a right-wing demonstrator rammed his SUV three times into a police bus guarding the building while others defaced a Chinese flag.
The anger came a day after South Korean officials said the Chinese captain of a boat suspected of illegally fishing in South Korean waters killed one coast guard officer and wounded another.
The JoongAng Ilbo daily newspaper called the fishermen pirates in a front-page headline, and the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said in an editorial that the coast guard should have more ships at its disposal and be more forceful in the fight against heavily armed fishermen.
President Lee told a Cabinet meeting that South Korea will get tough on illegal Chinese fishermen, according to the presidential Blue House office.
During a news conference on Tuesday, South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae suggested a discussion channel between his country and China to discuss further effective and practical measures to stop such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, President Lee's possible visit to China next month may also be reconsidered if the case is not smoothly resolved, a Blue House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Police say they've asked for a warrant to extend the detainment of the Chinese boat captain.
South Korea asked China's ambassador just last week to try to rein in illegal Chinese fishing.
On Monday it lodged a strong protest with the diplomat over the latest incident.

STORYLINE
China's southern Guangdong Province has long been the country's economic powerhouse, but it is now facing a slump along with the rest of the world.
China's government announced a massive stimulus package on Sunday, valued at 586 (b) billion US dollars, but Guangdong is already experiencing the pain of factory closures, layoffs, and a drop in exports.
One sign of the slowdown is the sight of migrant workers going home at a crowded railway station in Guangzhou, provincial capital of Guangdong province.
Guangdong is famous as a magnet for migrant workers from China's poorer provinces.
But in the face of declining demand for their exports, manufacturers in Guangdong have cut their workforces.
American Philip Richardson's who owns a speaker factory is an example of the tough economic times.
Normally, November is the busiest time of year, preparing orders for the Christmas season in the United States, the main market for his high-end audio speakers.
There would usually be 115 workers on the assembly lines at the factory, Richardson says, working in two shifts to produce more than 13-hundred speakers a day.
But this year, he has one assembly line running at 80 per cent and other is completely empty, with no work going on there at all.
The factory is producing only 400 to 500 speakers a day at the moment.
China's latest financial stimulus package might help reduce the costs that small and medium enterprises like Philip Richardson's face, but it can't improve the export market that they are so dependent on, says Li Kui-wai, from the Department of Economics and Finance, at Hong Kong's City University.
The main challenge for China is to improve its own domestic consumption, and the ability of domestic producers to sell their goods at home, not only relying on exports, Li says.
