Nelson Travel Guide - New Zealand Charming Experience
Nelson is the second oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson is situated in a region often known as Nelson Tasman or the Top of the South. It is actually slightly north of the capital city of Wellington. Together with Richmond, it has a population of around 50,000 ranking it as New Zealand’s tenth most populous city and is the geographical centre of the nation.
Nelson is a compact coastal city set amongst some of New Zealand's most stunning scenery. The city is the economic and cultural centre for the Nelson-Tasman region and offers an excellent range of shopping, eating and cultural experiences with an abundance of parks, rivers, beaches and nature trails to explore. Nelson is named after British admiral Viscount Nelson and many streets and features such as Trafalgar Park and Hardy, Collingwood and Nile Streets, are named after his naval battles and comrades.
Nelson is New Zealand's oldest city since, although it was proclaimed a Bishop's See and city under letters patent by Queen Victoria on 27 September 1858 and after Christchurch's city charter, Pakeha settlement had started in earnest in Nelson in 1841, 9 years before the good ship Charlotte-Jane arrived in Christchurch on 16 December 1850. Nelson is usually New Zealand's sunniest city with over 2,500 sunshine hours per year.
The Nelson region covers five distinct geographic areas:
The urban centres of Nelson & Richmond
The highways of Mapua, Motueka and upper and lower Moutere, through rolling horticultural land
The idyllic coastline of Abel Tasman National Park
The heart of the parks, Golden Bay between the huge Kahurangi and tiny Abel Tasman national parks
The alpine lakes and rivers around St Arnaud - Nelson Lakes & Murchison including Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi national parks
The Nelson economy is based on the ‘big four’ industries of seafood, horticulture, tourism and forestry. Port Nelson is the biggest fishing port in Australasia. There are also a range of growth industries, including art and craft, aviation, engineering technology, and information technology. The region's official tourism organisation is Nelson Tasman Tourism, which operates i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in Nelson City, Takaka in Golden Bay and in Murchison.
Nelson City is small enough to walk around, but for access from the surrounding suburbs and around the sites and attractions of the city and region you'll likely want to rent a car, take a taxi, or have a fresh set of legs and a bicycle. Nelson has a wide variety of excellent cafes and restaurants using fresh local produce. Nelson is the largest fishing port in Australasia, so the fresh seafood is always great. Nelson offers an excellent range of quality accommodation including Backpackers, Bed and Breakfasts (B&B's), Holiday Homes, Hotels, Lodges, Motels, Resorts and Serviced Apartments.

1) The History of Nelson
It is believed that Maori have been living in the area since about 1400. Nelson was the second city to be settled in New Zealand by Europeans, the city being established in 1841. Reminders of the early settlers remain in a few grand old houses today. Broadgreen was built in 1855, and on display in the house are colonial furniture and a collection of textiles and clothing of the pioneer era. Also on show is a fantastic rose garden.
2) The Nature & National Parks of the Nelson-Tasman Area
A 540-million-year-old fossil, the oldest ever found in New Zealand, was located in the Kahurangi National Park, a huge, park with large areas of trackless wilderness, while Nelson Lakes National Park is full of birdlife and activity. The Abel Tasman National Park is a relatively small park, with coastal views and beautiful scenery. Wander along beaches and over hills, and find fur seal colonies, and see penguins and dolphins off the coast as you go. Farewell Spit, the absolute top of the South Island, is a 30 km stretch of sand, that has been a bird sanctuary since the 1930s.
3) Places to visit in the city of Nelson
The Centre of New Zealand is right here in Nelson. Located in a walk from the Botanical Reserve, which incidentally, is where the first rugby game in New Zealand was played. If visiting gardens are your scene, there are a couple of highly recommended places you must see. The Miyazu Japanese Gardens are a celebration of the relationship with Nelson's sister city in Japan, a serene place that utilizes styles of Japanese gardening to create sought-after models in this collection.tranquility and beauty in horticulture.
4) Produce in the Nelson-Marlborough area
While the Marlborough region is very famous for wine, the Nelson-Tasman area also has some great boutique wines. A drive around the vineyards will also introduce you to other food tastings that are locally produced, such as chocolates, honeys and jams, chutneys, pesto, and processed meats. Wines to be found are usually Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Marlborough is a big Sauvignon Blanc producer, with some quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Reislings. Try stopping off at Havelock for some Greenshell Mussels.
5) Walking Nelson Plus
Nelson has to be the hiking capital of New Zealand with so many walks, scaled to all energetic levels. Short walks start at about 5 minutes, like the Pelorus Bridge Walk. The Motueka Waterfront Walk is suitable for wheelchairs, and will take about 90 minutes if the entire walk is done. The Abel Tasman Coastal Walk is 52 km of easy walking that will take between 3-5 days, and there are lots of choices in between these options.
