Letchworth Garden City
Sydney-based journalist and author Keith Howes visits Letchworth Garden City in the county of Hertfordshire in England where he was brought up and educated. He tells us about the history of the city and we meet some of the locals including the famous statue of Sappho.
Letchworth was one of the world's first new towns and the first garden city. It also inspired other cities such as Canberra in Australia and Hellerau in Germany. There is even a story that Lenin visited Letchworth. One of the city's inspirations was social reformer Ebenezer who wrote a book called Garden Cities of To-morrow.
George Orwell lived in the nearby village of Wallington and that is where he wrote his books 1984 and Animal Farm. The 2013 film World's End was largely filmed in Letchworth. The city was also home to Britain's first roundabout.

Letchworth Town Centre Consultation Final Stage
Our exhibition is now open which presents a new plan for The Wynd, following ideas and suggestions from the public. Three options were presented through an exhibition and at local events, community group meetings and schools back in October and November last year.
Option two 'Letchworth's Hidden Garden', which looked to introduce a garden centre-themed visitor attraction, proved most popular at the earlier consultation and has been developed to a concept called 'The Wynd Village'. The scheme brings together shops, cafés, restaurants, housing, market stalls and regular events within a 'garden centre' environment.
There are also suggestions for the wider town centre.
Outdoor Cinema on Broadway
More than 2,000 people enjoyed open air cinema on Broadway Gardens in August 2015, as Broadway Cinema and North Hertfordshire District Council staged a weekend of outdoor screenings in the heart of Letchworth Garden City.

Broadway Cinema - an artist's eye
This fantastic short film was made by our Broadway Cinema Operative Tom Blunden who is also studying for a degree in computer games art at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. He’s 19 and put together this animation in his first year after being asked to create an environment of relative importance to himself.
“I’ve been at the cinema almost three years and enjoy it. I like film, which helps, but I also like the people. It’s a fun, relaxed environment, and the building itself is a pleasure to work in as it’s somewhat historic.”
For Tom, who is now in his second year of university, the film is a taste of things to come. He aims to get into the games or film industry, creating computer generated work/animated pieces for everyone to see eventually on a much larger platform.
