UK: Class 421 3CIG 1498 Farringford, nostalgic internal sounds leaving Brockenhurst
UK: Class 421 3CIG 1498 Farringford, nostalgic internal sounds on Brockenhurst Lymington service.
This clip was recorded on the 18th April 2010.
This British Rail Class 421 3Cig unit was restored to 1960s-era British Railways green livery for use on the Lymington Branch Line.

The British Rail Class 421 (or 4Cig) electrical multiple units were built at BR's BREL York Works between 1964 and 1972. Units were built in two batches, and were initially introduced on services on the Brighton Main Line. Later units were introduced on services to Portsmouth. These units replaced older Southern Railway-designed units, such as the 5Bel Brighton Belle units, and 4Cor units. Towards the end of their life, with the increasing use of newer trains which were equipped with sliding or plug doors, these trains were known commonly as slam door trains. The fleet's lifespan was 46 years.
In December 2004 unit no. 1394 was reduced to a three-car unit with the removal of its Cep trailer. It was reclassified as Class 421/7, renumbered 1499, and dedicated to the Lymington Branch Line service, where it replaced the previous incumbent unit, no. 1198.
Services on the Lymington Branch Line were operated as a heritage operation using one of two refurbished 3Cig units, nos. 1497 and 1498. The two units were launched into service on 12 May 2005 having been repainted into heritage liveries, 1497 in blue and grey and 1498 in the green that the units carried when built. However, in May 2010, the new timetable changes saw the units replaced for more modern stock to save maintenance on a non-standard fleet of two units. As stated in the relevant timetable, The slam door trains will be remembered with affection as they pass into history. The change took place on 22 May 2010 and the units have been replaced by a Class 158 on weekdays and a Class 450 Desiro at weekends. The class 421s have both been preserved due to historic significance.

Brockenhurst is the largest village by population within the New Forest, Hampshire, England. The nearest city is Southampton some 13 miles to the North East, while Bournemouth is also nearby, 15 miles South West. Surrounding towns and villages include Beaulieu, Lymington, Lyndhurst, and Sway.
Brockenhurst is noted for its unfenced village centre allowing commoning animals to wander freely amongst its shops & businesses.
Brockenhurst railway station offers frequent South West Trains services to Bournemouth, London Waterloo, Southampton and Weymouth. CrossCountry express services also run to Manchester via Birmingham.
The station is the junction where the branch line to Lymington connects to the mainline. The Lymington Flyer services connect with the ferry to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. The branch line is a Heritage line and its self-contained nature permitted the use of slam-door rolling stock, until this was discontinued in 2010. In 1967 it was the last standard-gauge branch line in the south of England to cease using steam haulage.
Brockenhurst is twinned with Pont St Martin fr:Pont-Saint-Martin, in Loire-Atlantique, France.

Lymington is a port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent, in the New Forest district of Hampshire, England. It is to the east of the South East Dorset conurbation, and faces Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight which is connected to it by a car ferry, operated by Wightlink. The town has a large tourist industry, based on proximity to the New Forest and the harbour. It is a major yachting centre with three marinas.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
The Lymington Branch Line is a railway that runs from Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier, both in the New Forest. The railway line is around 9 km (5.6 mi) long, and is single track throughout its length. It diverges from the South Western Main Line at Lymington Junction; and, at Lymington Pier, trains connect with Wightlink ferry services to Yarmouth, on the Isle of Wight. The Lymington Branch Line is electrified using the 750 V DC third rail system—common in the former Southern Region of British Railways.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

The New Forest Tour a great day out from London
The New Forest Tour is a great way of seeing the New Forest in a different way, with six open-top tour buses covering three different routes. Tours run hourly every day from 28 June to 14 September 2014 and all tickets are valid across all routes
If you are travelling from London on the train it will only take you 90 minutes to reach the New Forest and you can hop on the bus direct from the station. Why not camp nearby at one of our 10 New Forest Camping in the Forest sites? Link to this page
You can hop on and off where you like, bring their bikes, listen to fascinating audio commentary and catch another bus later on with the same ticket.
The routes call at Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Lymington, Beaulieu and the Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway - proving great for local residents too.
New Forest Country Walk - Acres Down to Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary round
Our video is a guided walk in the New Forest, Hampshire. We start from Acres Down, Minstead near Lyndhurst and walk through some beautiful autumn woodland, using the cycle tracks, to the Canadian Memorial and Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. As we return to Acres Down using the cycle tracks we were lucky enough to see ten of the pigs that had been let out to roam the forest to forage the acorns that have fallen from the oak trees which is referred to as pannage. This is an easy walk on forestry tracks with some slight inclines and declines. Approx 5.25 miles allow 2 hours using OS Explorer Map OL22, New Forest. Start: Acres Down Forestry Commission free car park near Newtown, Minstead.
Remembering the Slammers - June 2005
First I will stress that I did record this myself and it is obviously not a recent clip. The footage was recorded on the 2nd June 2005 on my DVD camcorder, this was before I had a camera and is only the forth DVD I filmed on what was a new camcorder at the time.
Originally 35mins long I have only have put together clips that show slammer units, and as a bonus a 73 on a Gatwick Express service before they all were withdrawn. The footage is uploaded here after finding some software that converts .VOB files into .avi format so that I could edit it and upload it here. This video isn't perfect, and also due to the software a watermark is present at the beginning of the video.
If I find better software I will see if I can re-do this footage without the watermark, but for the time being please give me some feedback as I have plenty more footage on DVD that I have considered converting and uploading (not much Slammer footage however).

New Forest Railway, 1950's - Film 6651
New Forest Railway. Amateur home movie footage of a railway station. Exterior of the station with a car park in front. A grey van is parked outside. The station is probably Westmoore. A shot inside the ticket office through the open door. The platform and tracks curve round to the right hand side, and in the distance two men can be seen crossing the track by foot with brown sacks which they throw onto the opposite platform.
A steam train approaches the station pulling timbered and open wagons. Another locomotive approaches the platform from the other direction. Shots of a long train of passenger carriages as the engine departs through the station. Another passenger train steams towards the station. A ticket machine is on a white washed wall. Tickets cost 2d.
A man waits at Holmsley station as a passenger train approaches. Various further shots of trains passing through stations. The driver of locomotive 82028 talks to onlookers from his cab (we see only the engine driver).
Shots of Breamore railway station - its buildings and platforms. The sign outside the ticket office reads Closed, although the door is open and we can see through onto the platform. A wider shot of the exterior reveals two large black cars parked outside. An exterior brick work staircase leads down to the side of the track, and a brick arched road bridge goes overhead. The sign by the side of the track is a warning to stop, look and listen before crossing. This station is Fordingbridge. General shots of the platforms and the station's outbuildings.
A train passes through the station at Verwood, and guards in uniform wait at a larger station as a passenger train approaches.
