Broken River Mountain near Eungella National Park in Queensland was said to be the best place to meet a platypus in the entire Australia. That I am not sure about, but definitely you can see a platypus here, almost guaranteed, if you come at the right time of the day: 4-8am; 3-7pm.

Searching for Platypuses at Broken River, Eungella National Park
(Best watched in 1080p) Broken River, high up in Queensland's Eungella National Park, is a brilliant place to watch platypuses. We were lucky enough to visit during June 2018, on a warm, cloudy day. We thought we would have to wait until just before dusk if we wanted to catch a glimpse of these beautiful but elusive little guys. However, possibly thanks to the cloud cover, the first platypus appeared at about 3pm! Broken River is roughly 90 minutes' drive from Mackay; a wonderful journey along the Pioneer Valley and up the impressive, winding, Eungella Range Road. Despite their apparently remote locations, each of the viewing areas visited in this film are within five minutes walk of the main car park and toilets, along excellently maintained paths and boardwalks. Further paths allow walker to explore the rainforest. The wonderful Platypus Lodge Restaurant, run by an Austrian gentleman called Oskar, serves fabulous, freshly prepared food and excellent coffee. Civilised or what?

Platypus were frisky at Broken River on the weekend (21 Aug 2016). At least 5 individuals seen during the day!
Three individual platypus were seen in the main pool , downstream of the bridge.
Another seen at the bridge and one upstream at the viewing platform. All of them swimming around unperturbed by the tourists, in full sun in the middle of the day...

The are supposed to feed from 3pm till dark, but we waited 3 hours to see them as the sun went down. They are very cute and well worth the wait. The Channel Whitsunday.
