This square, which dates back to the Middle Ages, is the heart of the city; it contains important historical buildings which symbolize the city's concern with civil rights as well as its religious tradition. The palace of Broletto, which incorporates the municipal tower and the loggia delle grida, exteds along the eastern side as well as two cathedrals - the Duomo Nuovo (the New Cathedral) and the Duomo Vecchio (the Old Cathedral).

The Palace of the Broletto is the oldest municipal building in the city and was the centre of political life when Brescia was a city-state. It has a square ground plan with an internal courtyard which was built in stages from the Middle Ages up to the XVII century, when an open bossed arcade was added to the north side.

Nowadays the buildings houses the Prefecture, a Police station and the administrative offices of the province and council. The Duomo Nuovo was built between 1604 and 1825: the long history of its construction is reflected in the baroque style of the lower par and the rococo style of its imposing and grandiose facade in white Botticino marble.

The Duomo Vecchio, or Rotonda, dating from the XII century, is a splendid example of a circular stone building from the Middle Ages and contains several works of art. The former ground level of the city can be observed around it. The south side of the square is occupied by the palace of the headquarters of a bank designed by Tagliaferri at the beginning of the XX century.

On the west side, opposite the Broletto, the neo-classical palace (1809) with two Ionic columns in the centre should be noted, as well as the House of Camerlenghi, who were Venetian administrators, which has windows with three lights and a medieval arcade. This Arcade leads to the main arcade in Via Dieci Giornate which was built along the edge of the Roman wall.

Antica piazza del Duomo di Brescia

Piazza del Duomo in Brescia, ora piazza Paolo VI. Sul lato a Est: Broletto, Duomo Nuovo e Duomo Vecchio. La piazza mantiene l'antica struttura medievale con abitazioni costruite in epoca rinascimentale sotto la Serenissima Repubblica Veneta. Palazzo Broletto con la Loggia delle grida è affiancato dalla la torre civica (o Torre del Pegol): storicamente la sede del potere politico. Sul lato orientale si erge il Duomo Nuovo, costruito tra il 1604 ed il 1825. Alla sua destra sorge il Duomo Vecchio, detto Rotonda, costruito all'inizio del secolo Mille su antichi resti di edificio religioso longobardo, a sua volta fondato su resti romani. Storicamente è tra gli esempi più antichi di stratificazione religiosa, al pari delle più antiche basiliche romane. The monumental archaeological area of the Roman forum and the monastic complex of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia have become a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of a group of seven inscribed as Longobards in Italy, Places of Power.

Brescia is considered the industrial capital of Italy. The metallurgy and the production of machine tools and firearms are of particular economic significance, along with mechanical and automotive engineering. The major companies based in the city are utility company A2A, steel producer Lucchini, firearms manufacturer Beretta, shotgun producer Perazzi, machine tools manufacturer Camozzi and gas control manufacturer Cavagna Group. Nicknamed Leonessa d'Italia (The Lioness of Italy), Brescia is the home of Italian caviar, and is known for being the original production area of the Franciacorta sparkling wine as well as the prestigious Mille Miglia classic car race that starts and ends in the city. In addition, Brescia is the setting for most of the action in Alessandro Manzoni's 1822 play Adelchi. Brescia and its territory will be the European Region of Gastronomy in 2017.

Brescia is located in the north-western section of the Po Valley, at the foot of the Brescian Prealps, between the Mella and the Naviglio, with the Lake Iseo to the west and the Lake Garda to the east. The southern area of the city is flat, while towards the north the territory becomes hilly. The city's lowest point is 104 metres (341 ft) above sea level, the highest point is Monte Maddalena at 874 metres (2,867 ft).

Un itinerario por Brescia en Italia

Dentro de la región de Lombardía, al fondo del valle Val Trompia, se localiza el municipio de Brescia (o Brixia antiguamente), conocido también como La Leonessa d´Italia.

Repleta de monumentos hermosos como el Monasterio de S. Salvatore, la iglesia de los santos Nazaro e Celso o la iglesia de San Giovanni, esta ciudad, continúa reluciendo por contener las más bellas plazas en el centro de la misma. Por tal motivo, pasaremos a nombrar un pequeño itinerario para que recorran una por una.

Como primer punto, la Plaza del Mercado es una de las más visitadas por los turistas. Realizada durante el período medieval sobre un lugar reservado para paños y linos, este espacio comprende tiendas y pórticos de arco rebajado en el sector meridional y oriental (remontados hacia fines del siglo XV) y una pequeña iglesia llamada Santa María del Lino, de forma cuadrangular con la cúpula cubierta.

Sin embargo, otra de las plazas para conocer es la típica Plaza Loggia, la cual contiene memorias de la conciencia cívica de la zona, dos increíbles monumentos hechos en conmemoración a los mártires de las Diez Jornadas y al atentado terrorista del 25 de Mayo de 1974 y una importante arquitectura. Sumergirse en este lugar implica admirar el Palacio de Loggia (sede del Ayuntamiento), los Montes de Piedad y la Torre del Reloj (el cual marca la hora desde el año 1581 y es de estilo jónico).

Finalmente, para completar el recorrido por las plazas de Brescia en la zona céntrica, la Piazza Paolo VI (Plaza del Duomo actualmente), es una de las más antiguas que figuran en la ciudad. Considerada como el pulmón del centro histórico, este sitio contiene construcciones como el Palacio Municipal del Broletto (compuesto por patios internos en un cuadrilátero de 100 metros por 75 metros), la Rotonda o Duomo Antiguo (construida a fines del siglo XI sobre la basílica de Santa María Maggiore) y el Duomo Nuevo (diseñado por el arquitecto bresciano Giovan Battista Lantana en honor a la Assunta).
