• FEATURED in this video I give you a glimpse inside the historic Bronson-Mulholland House while attending a talk about a St. Johns River Mule Boat. Brendan Burke from the St. Augustine Lighthouse LAMP Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program describes the discovery and preservation of a flats boat found on the St. Johns River at Whetstone Point.
The record in place work has been completed by LAMP, who plans to leave the wreck right where it was found in order to preserve it. A turpentine hack weight and several bricks were found on the site, leading to the possibility of the area having been a wharf or landing. I rather liked the possible story of the sunken flat boat that hinted at Captain Dickinson using it in the Civil War for nipping across the river to do mischief, as Burke said, on the St. Augustine side of the river.
Join me for a bit of the talk, some historical notations, and a brief tour of the Bronson-Mulholland House; a historic home in Palatka, Florida that was built in 1854 at 100 Madison Street. Judge Issac H. Bronson was a part owner of the Palatka Saw Mill Company, and probably built the home from cypress from the Ocklawaha River. He petitioned that Palatka serve as the county seat. He donated land for the courthouse. Florida's First State Governor William Dunn Moseley, Governor Robert Raymond Reid, and Benjamin A. Putnam, county namesake, were visitors.
The home was vacant during the Civil War, and possibly used by Confederate soldiers as a lookout for Union forces on the St. John's River. It also was used as a lookout for Confederate blockade runners by the Union troops. Later it was used as a school, and a Red Cross base by owner Mary Mulholland.
