Dunwoody
Dunwoody, a northern suburb of Atlanta, is a city of about 46,000 in DeKalb County. It was incorporated in 2008. There are several distinct districts.
At the heart of the city is Dunwoody Village, which features the Dunwoody Village Shopping Center and the architectural style of colonial Williamsburg.
The area around Perimeter Mall is Perimeter Center, served by the Dunwoody MARTA station and convenient to two highways, I-285, the Perimeter, and GA 400.
Georgetown, developed in the 1960s, contains both subdivisions of single-family houses and its own retail district. It's one of the most walkable areas of Dunwoody.
Williamsburg is a commercial district on the eastern edge of Dunwoody, with three centralized shopping centers at a major intersection.
Tilly Mill is the site of Dunwoody's largest park, Brook Run, which features walking trails, a playground, a dog park and a community garden. The Jewish Community Center, which hosts a major annual book festival, is in Tilly Mill.
Retail and greenspace characterize Winters Chapel, at the border with Peachtree Corners. There is a linear park along the Twin Lakes water reservoir with tennis courts, a playground and a picnic pavilion.
There are seven major parks in Dunwoody, including Dunwoody Park, the home of the Dunwoody Nature Center, which opens its doors annually to the Butterfly Festival.
The Dunwoody Homeowners Association (DHA) represents this upscale community, ensuring the quality of life and emphasizing the residential character of Dunwoody. Under its auspices is the area north of I-285, east of GA 400, south of the Chattahoochee River and west of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. It includes all homes and condominiums in the 30338, 30346 and 30360 ZIP codes.
The DHA had its origins in the late 1960s, as suburban growth from Atlanta began to push north. Today, it's regarded as one of the most powerful homeowners associations in the United States and can be credited with ensuring that the rights and interests of the majority of the residents of Dunwoody are sustained and supported.
The DHA has redirected general aviation traffic from Peachtree-DeKalb airport, to make Dunwoody quieter; improved sidewalks, extensions and ramp additions; adopted street sign toppers to enhance community pride; and successfully negotiated with commercial developers to promote smart growth in the area.
In addition, the DHA organizes the largest Independence Day parade in the state; the Light Up Dunwoody holiday event, with a tree lighting; and Food Truck Thursdays in Brook Run Park from April through October. Residents can opt in to an e-mail list for notifications about upcoming events.
The DHA recognizes 25 neighborhoods, homeowner associations and civic associations in the city of Dunwoody.
Dunwoody children attend DeKalb County schools, including Dunwoody Elementary, Vanderlyn Elementary, Austin Elementary and Chestnut Charter Elementary School.
There are two charter schools for middle schoolers, Peachtree Charter Middle School and Kingsley Charter School. At Peachtree Charter Middle School, eighth-graders can enroll in STEM Academy, which gives them high school credits in Engineering and Physical Sciences. At Kingsley, the administration has established the middle of the week as Walking Wednesday, when students and their parents are encouraged to walk to school together!
Dunwoody High School is the secondary school; 65% of the students are enrolled in Advanced Placement courses.
Brook Run pt. 1
Intrepid explorers venture in to the haunted ruins of Brook Run Park at midnight. This is part one of a two part video. This part is mainly just exploration, while the next part actually shows us coming into contact with...something. Mwuahahahaha!
Please, don't take this too seriously. It's all good fun.
The music is from the Aliens soundtrack composed by James Horner. All musical credit goes to him. I don't own the rights to the music.
Brook Run Theatre Demolition
This video is about a the Brook Run Theatre. Brook Run was once the home of over 300 people who were physically and mentally challenged. Located on 102 acres in the heart of Dunwoody, Georgia, the facility consisted of a hospital, several dormitories, administration buildings and a gathering place commonly referred to as the theatre. It was far more than a theatre. It had a chapel where all denominations (Jewish, Christian - all) worshiped; it had a basketball court where the residents could recreate; it had classrooms where the residents could be educated; and yes, it had a theatre where the residents could be entertained. The facility was closed in 1998 (after operating for over 30 years) virtually overnight. It became a park that was initially sold to DeKalb County by the state of Georgia. The 102 acre park has been developed with a Children's Adventure Garden, a world class skate park, a community garden, a dog park, a zip line and more recently two miles of multi-purpose trails extend throughout the facility. Buildings have been demolished to make way for progress. First the hospital, then dorms and administration buildings. The last remaining structure was the multi-purpose theatre. This video provides a pictorial walk-through of this magnificent 34,000 square foot structure and its demolition. No one ever answered the questions Why was it destroyed? and What was the hurry for destroying it. A master plan (which has yet to be completed) was being developed for the park and a survey reflected it was one of the facilities most often suggested by the respondents they desired to have restored (tied with ball fields).

Dunwoody Takes Over 5 DeKalb Parks - 11Alive.com - Jennifer Leslie
DUNWOODY, GA -- Dunwoody Mayor Ken Wright and members of the city council spent Monday morning on a bus tour of five parks now under new management.
Dunwoody assumed control of the parks from DeKalb County under a bill that was signed into law in May.
First and foremost, we want to make sure the parks are secure, the buildings are secure and there's no further vandalism, said Mayor Wright. We've had a lot of vandalism over the years, and we want to tie that down immediately.
The city leaders unveiled new signs Monday that reflect the new control.
Even though Dunwoody broke away and became a city in December 2008, DeKalb County has maintained control of all of the parks within the new city limits.
It took action by state lawmakers to make the transfer happen.
The parks are truly a liability, Mayor Wright said. What we wanted to do as a city is take over that liability and take the costs away from the county and into the city. We can't do anything with the parks unless we own them.
DeKalb's financial chief has estimated it costs close to $1 million a year to take care of the parks.
Dunwoody paid the county $100 an acre for a total of 165 acres of park space.
The big issue now is what will happen to as much as $7 million in bond money that DeKalb County planned to spend on improvements at Brook Run Park, now the city's largest park.
Dunwoody wants the money, but some DeKalb County leaders said they should be able to use the money to make improvements at other county-owned parks instead.
DeKalb County Commission Jeff Rader said Monday the issue is so important that the county might sue to maintain control of the money.

Bridge on Multi-Use Trail Crossing Wetlands - Arabia Mountain
In the Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve. A 12 to 14-ft wide cement Multi-Use Trail has been constructed that traverses a 535 acre forest. Runs about 10 miles through the preserve and connects into the Rockdale County trail system to Conyers. 20 miles each way. Built by the PATH Foundation, who has built the Silver Comet Trail and is building the PATH400 Trail, running along GA-400 from the Lindbergh MARTA station northward to near the Atlanta / Sandy Springs city border. If the Dunwoody City Council will approve, we could build a bridge across a similar creek and CONNECT the trail in Brook Run to the trails being built in Georgetown / Project Renaissance. It is designated as Phase III of our Georgetown / Brook Run Trail system. For details of the 4-3 split decision by Dunwoody City council to purchase the connecting land for a very modest $30k, please go here:

Brook Run lawsuit between Dunwoody & DeKalb over 7 Million in bonds.
The City of Dunwoody has filed suit against DeKalb County over Brook Run Park referendum dollars.
The city filed a lawsuit Monday in the Superior Court of DeKalb County alleging that the county owes the city more than $7 million in funds from a 2005 bond referendum that were to be spent on the park.
That referendum was to put $11.5 million into the park, but the county used just $4 million of that for the skate park and playground, but did not spend any further money on the park.
