Expert videographer Gary Milbanke has created this preview of the proposed Fringed Hill gondola, Brook Valley, Nelson NZ. The proposal will offer 620m vertical lift to the heart of a world-class mountain bike network including the Dun Mountain Trail, 5 km from the heart of Nelson city.

Fencing has continued after a winter break for the workers at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.

The Bird Sanctuary is located at the top of Brook Valley in Nelson and has been a favorite location of mine since i was a child. Over the years it has changed greatly as measures have been put in place to change it from a decaying hydro reserve to a thriving historic wildlife sanctuary.
It is well worth the trip if you find yourself in Nelson on Holiday or are a local looking for something new. The walkway is easy with only a couple of small inclines and takes around 40 minutes to an hour depending on fitness levels and how far up the tracks you go.
Work is ongoing to improve the tracks but it is normally peaceful so you can enjoy the bird songs.

John Key came to Nelson today to officially open the completed Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.

1-2 September Brodifacoum poison drop up the Brook Valley, Nelson.
No community consultation was ever made by the Brook Sanctuary. They went ahead regardless with dropping the first of a total of 3 drops amounting to 26.5 tonnes of brodifacoum, which is 6x as bad as 1080. This video shows you how close the aerial drop was to residents.
Why would a sanctuary want to poison 700ha of pristine native bush, while there is an alternative on the market, i.e. safe trapping?
The Brook Valley Community Group have been fighting the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust to to stop this dangerous poison drop for a very long time. We still have an Appeal Hearing coming up to hear our case, however this hasn't stop BWST going ahead with dropping the 26.5 tonnes of brodifacoum - 3 drops over 1.5 months -and not giving the required 48 hours notice to affected parties, or advising the neighbourhood a drop was taking place. They also failed to have a resource consent on a public reserve site.
The safety data sheet for Pestoff 20R (Brodifacoum) says: Danger. Deadly Poison. Keep out of reach of children. Ecotoxic.
This bio-accumulative eco-poison was aerially dropped last weekend in the Brook Valley and immediately next to the Brook Camping Ground, by Marlborough Helicopters, for Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust (led by Hudson Doods and David Butler), condoned and funded by Nelson City Council (signed off by Alex Louvardis), Neil Henderson of Environmental Management Services (who is contracted to the Council;) the current NZ Minister for the Environment and local Nelson MP Nick Smith and by the NZ Police.
The EPA, MPI. Worksafe and other poison enforcement authorities were conspicuously absent. More info here on brodifacoum
Many apparent breaches of health and safety laws were made, RMA, false arrests, breach of NZ Bill of Rights Act, nuisance and criminal nuisance, breach of human rights, the MPI Operating Code 63 for Pestoff, the waste of public funds and apparent attempts to pervert the course of justice by preventing the collection of evidence of criminal offending.
If you are a Citizen unhappy with how you have been treated please lodge your formal complaints directly with the relevant authorities. Our Environment lawyer, Sue Grey believes the relevant authorites may include the Nelson City Council, Worksafe, MPI (for any breaches of the Operating Plan 63 for Pestoff 20R, the EPA which is supposed to enforce HSNO, Animal Control Products (the government owned authority which manufactures Pestoff) the Police and Police Complaints Authority, the Ombudsman, Auditor-General (for mis-use of public money), the Commerce Commission for misleading and deceptive claims made and published by the Minister for the Environment.

Nelson is the second oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson is situated in a region often known as Nelson Tasman or the Top of the South. The Nelson economy is based on the ‘big four’ industries of seafood, horticulture, tourism and forestry. Port Nelson is the biggest fishing port in Australasia. There are also a range of growth industries, including art and craft, aviation, engineering technology, and information technology. The region's official tourism organisation is Nelson Tasman Tourism, which operates i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in Nelson City, Takaka in Golden Bay and in Murchison.
Nelson City is small enough to walk around, but for access from the surrounding suburbs and around the sites and attractions of the city and region you'll likely want to rent a car, take a taxi, or have a fresh set of legs and a bicycle.
