Norovirus at Mountain Nursing Home
A nursing home restricts visitation after a viral attack.
It's the norovirus, which can hit a patient quickly, and can be easily transmitted to others. Managers at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care, in Burnsville, notified the Health Department of an illness making people sick, last Wednesday.
Specimens were taken and sent to the state lab, which verified the disease was norovirus. Brookside then closed its doors to visitors, and forbid the residents to leave the facility.
Health Department nurses say about half of the 125 patients are now suffering from the disease. The state recommended that staff members use gloves while assisting patients, and to thoroughly wash hands after leaving a patient's room.
The primary threat to residents is dehydration, so the staff here are keeping close watch on residents to make sure they have plenty to drink. Restricting visitation and keeping residents in the facility are both aimed at limiting the spread of the disease in the community.
Health department nurses say the norovirus should run its course, and that visitation should be restored soon.
