We took a road (and ferry) trip north to Orkney Islands and I was able to get three walks in. This first one is along the northern coast near the Brough of Birsay. We saw arctic terns and gulls and the Whale Bone as well as cows and sheep and STUNNING views. The wind was strong but hopefully not to bad with the audio. We were staying in our Vacation Rental accommodation nearby. At this far north lattitude, the sun is out until almost midnight but it makes the colors so vibrant. I hope you enjoy this walking treadmill video workout and virtual tour of this little section of coast.

Orkney - (Old Norse: Orkneyjar), also known as the Orkney Islands, is an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, situated off the north coast of the isle of Great Britain. Orkney is 10 miles (16 km) north of the coast of Caithness and comprises approximately 70 islands, of which 20 are inhabited. The largest island, Mainland, is often referred to as the Mainland, and has an area of 523 square kilometres (202 sq mi), making it the sixth-largest Scottish island and the tenth-largest island in the British Isles. The largest settlement and administrative centre is Kirkwall.
Brough of Birsay - The Brough of Birsay is an uninhabited tidal island off the north-west coast of The Mainland of Orkney, Scotland, in the parish of Birsay. It is located around 13 miles north of Stromness and features the remains of Pictish and Norse settlements as well as a modern light house. The Old Norse name for the island was Byrgisey which means fort island, and gives the parish its name. Brough, indeed, means fort.

Pictish And Viking Settlements Brough of Birsay Orkney Islands Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of Pictish and Norse settlements on Brough of Birsay an uninhabited tidal island off the north west coast off the mainland on visit to the Orkney Islands. The earliest settlement on the island is thought to have been in the 6th century, perhaps by Christian missionaries. In the 7th and 8th centuries it was a significant Pictish fortress, but by the 9th century the Picts had been displaced by Norsemen or Vikings. The extensive remains of an excavated Norse settlement and church overlay the earlier Pictish settlement. Before Kirkwall became the centre of power in the 12th century, Birsay was the seat of the rulers of Orkney. Norse dwellings included long houses, featuring both heating and drainage systems and some indications that saunas were present. Although not all the houses were likely in use at the same time, there was a significant community living here.

Brough of Birsay Lighthouse Orkney Islands Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of Brough of Birsay lighthouse located on the Brough of Birsay, an uninhabited tidal island off the north west coast of the mainland on visit to the Orkney Islands. It was designed and built by David Alan Stevenson in 1925. David, was born on 21 July 1854 in Edinburgh. He was a lighthouse engineer who built twenty six lighthouses in and around Scotland. He was part of the famous Stevenson family of lighthouse engineers, including brother Charles Stevenson, uncle Thomas Stevenson, and grandfather Robert Stevenson. His cousin was the author Robert Louis Stevenson. David died at his home, Troqueer , in the Kingsknowe area of Edinburgh on 11 April 1938. He is buried in Dean Cemetery.

I've had this footage on my computer for a year and a half, only now getting round to editing some of it together ! This was recorded August 2017 on our holiday to Scotland and Orkney.

St Magnus Cathedral known as the 'Light in the North' was founded in 1137 by the Viking, Earl Rognvald, in honour of his uncle St Magnus. The Cathedral belongs to the people of Orkney and its doors are open to all. The Cathedral, set in the heart of Kirkwall, the capital city of the Orkney Islands, is a place of stillness, of inspiration and warmth.

The Orkney Islands are about 16 kilometres north from the mainland of Great Britain. Visit the main town of Kirkwall and explore St Magnus Cathedral which was built from the 12th Century. Scattered around the main island are numerous neolithic sites including the Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae and the Brough of Birsay. Finally stop off at the Orkney Brewery for a fresh one and the Italian Chapel.

In the winter of 1850, a great storm battered Orkney.
There was nothing particularly unusual about that, but, on this occasion, the combination of wind and extremely high tides stripped the grass from a large mound, then known as Skerrabra.
This revealed the outline of a number of stone buildings - something that intrigued the local laird, William Watt, of Skaill, who embarked on an excavation of the site.
In 1868, after the remains of four ancient houses had been unearthed, work at Skerrabra was abandoned. The settlement remained undisturbed until 1925, when another storm damaged some of the previously excavated structures. A sea-wall was built to preserve these remains, but during the construction work, yet more ancient buildings were discovered.

We both have had some significant struggles with mental health issues over the years, but feel at our happiest when on the road.
Don't expect everything to be unicorns and rainbows, as we hope to show you both the good and the bad from our journey and ultimately our aim to hopefully Travel Ourselves Happy .
