Locals in Kenya boost dairy industry by producing cheese
Kenyans have never been big cheese eaters and neither are they known as experts in the cheese making business. However, a growing restaurant culture and interest in global cuisine has led to increasingly diversified tastes. Uche Okoronkwo brings us the story of Browns, a Kenyan cheese company that's is using milk from local farmers to make cheeses that are sold locally and exported across East Africa and beyond.
Brown's Food Co - A short history
Your favourite cheese brand, Brown's, was started back in the 1980s in the home of David and Sue Brown. Since then, the brand has expanded extensively, offering not only a wide range of cheese's but also crackers, natural ice creams, jams and dips.
BROWN'S CHEESE FARM - HOME-MADE BUTTER
Our Philsophy
Brown's cheese was founded on a passion for delicious, fresh, additive-free cheese. Established in 1979, our family-run business is now in the hands of the second generation of Browns. The farm lies among the beautiful tea plantations of Tigoni, and is run on purely biodynamic and organic principles.
We now welcome guests for cheese tastings and tours of our factory and farm, followed by delicious lunches with food sourced from our kitchen garden. Here, biodynamic and organic techniques are used to cultivate a wide and imaginative range of vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers. Our herd of Freesian cows supply us with milk and cream, while a vocal flock of chickens and bantams provide orange-yolked eggs which pair beautifully with mascarpone and cream cheese in cheesecakes.
We're located in Limuru above Nairobi.

Kenyans are gradually loving cheese
*Kenyans have never been big cheese eaters but with a growing restaurant culture and interests in various world cuisines, tastes are diversifying.*
Brown's cheese is a cheese company in Kenya started by a British Kenyan couple in Nairobi in the 70's.
Today the company processes about between 7000 and 15.000 litres of milk each day from its own herds and local cooperatives.
They target high volumes yet very high quality milk.
So we work very closely with those co-ops to get the quality that…

10 THINGS YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT KENYA
these are 10 things I guarantee you did not know about KENYA :-
--- Most Kenyans are Protestants.
70% of Kenyans are Christians and only 6% are Muslims. The rest are either Hindu, non-religous or part of indigenous groups.
---Kenya has only two seasons.
There’s only the rainy season and sunny season due to the geographical location of the country. All equatorial countries experience the same weather patterns.
Almost no one would associate Kenya with cheese. But wouldn’t you know it; the country has a rich cheese tasting culture that is the preserve of a few enthusiasts who know where to look. In Limuru, there is a farm called ‘Brown’s Cheese’ that has a cheese factory which offers tasting tours to those interested. You get to see and learn how the cheese is made, eat quite a bit of it and drink some wine.
----You Can Go Snake Hunting
You have probably heard of pythons, mambas, cobras and puff adders. Most of us prefer to keep our distance from these slithery vials of poison. But for the dare-devils, a chance to act out scenes from Anaconda and go hunting for pythons in the wild is simply too tempting to pass up. Kenya has well over 100 documented snake species, most of which are illusive, poisonous and not the kind of creepy-crawlies you want keeping you company by the way side. In Watamu, there is an outfit called ‘Bio-Ken’ which has taken it upon itself to show you all Kenya has to offer in terms of snakes. You can book tours that will take you through some of the most dense forests, rugged rocky cliffs and watery riverbeds (all this in the name of finding these illusive creatures).

Projektlernen 3. Tag @ Deutsche Schule Nairobi
KLASSE 4 - 50 Jahre DSN - 50 Jahre Kinderrechte
KLASSE 5 – Back to nature
