Browns Canyon Dedication
Summer 2015 - Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell and BLM Director Neil Kornze joined community members from the Upper Arkansas River Valley and partners from Colorado and beyond to celebrate the dedication of Colorado's newest national monument, Browns Canyon! They were joined by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, Congresswoman Diana DeGette and local and national leaders in conservation to celebrate the designation.
Browns Canyon, located on more than 21,000 acres between Buena Vista and Salida, Colo., offers an array of recreational opportunities like hiking, camping, rafting, rock climbing and more.
At the dedication celebration, members of the Department of the Interior and U.S. Forest Service rafted the Arkansas River through Browns Canyon. They were joined by members of the community who have been instrumental in the designation of the Monument as well as conservation and community groups like the Sierra Club and Hispanic Access Foundation.
The Arkansas River is one of the nation's most popular whitewater rafting and kayaking destinations. The beautiful and often unpredictable river offers boaters rapids changing from mild, family-friendly Class II and III sections to roaring Class IV and V rapids, which should only be braved by experts. On a spring or summer day, hundreds of private and commercial rafters float down the Arkansas to enjoy the scenery, warm weather and waves.

Mark Udall and Sen. Michael Bennet, the director of the National Park Services, representatives from the Department of Interior, and several others. This video documents their journey.
