Bruce Springsteen Birthday Special, WEBN 9/23/1980
WEBN special honoring Bruce Springsteen's 31st birthday with DJ Frank Johnson making some comments on Bruce's previous shows in Cincinnati and the upcoming album The River, which would be released about a month later. I only have part of the program, which featured bootleg recordings obtained from Everybody's Records. I'm surprised that they were allowed to mention that on the air; bootlegs are illegal after all. Good advertising though. I went to Everybody's soon after.

Bruce's Introduction At Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Concert
As Pete and I traveled to Washington for President Obama's Inaugural Celebration, he told me the entire story of We Shall Overcome. How it moved from a labor movement song and with Pete's inspiration had been adapted by the civil rights movement. That day as we sang This Land Is Your Land I looked at Pete, the first black president of the United States was seated to his right, and I thought of the incredible journey that Pete had taken. My own growing up in the sixties in towns scarred by race rioting made that moment nearly unbelievable and Pete had thirty extra years of struggle and real activism on his belt. He was ao happy that day, it was like, Pete, you outlasted the bastards, man!...It was so nice. At rehearsals the day before, it was freezing, like fifteen degrees and Pete was there; he had his flannel shirt on. I said, man, you better wear something besides that flannel shirt! He says, yeah, I got my longjohns on under this thing.
And I asked him how he wanted to approach This Land Is Your Land. It would be near the end of the show and all he said was, Well, I know I want to sing all the verses, I want to sing all the ones that Woody wrote, especially the two that get left out, about private property and the relief office. I thought, of course, that's what Pete's done his whole life. He sings all the verses all the time, especially the ones that we'd like to leave out of our history as a people. At some point Pete Seeger decided he'd be a walking, singing reminder of all of America's history. He'd be a living archive of America's music and conscience, a testament of the power of song and culture to nudge history along, to push American events towards more humane and justified ends. He would have the audacity and the courage to sing in the voice of the people, and despite Pete's somewhat benign, grandfatherly appearance, he is a creature of a stubborn, defiant, and nasty optimism. Inside him he carries a steely toughness that belies that grandfatherly facade and it won't let him take a step back from the things he believes in. At 90, he remains a stealth dagger through the heart of our country's illusions about itself. Pete Seeger still sings all the verses all the time, and he reminds us of our immense failures as well as shining a light toward our better angels and the horizon where the country we've imagined and hold dear we hope awaits us.
Now on top of it, he never wears it on his sleeve. He has become comfortable and casual in this immense role. He's funny and very eccentric. I'm gonna bring Tommy out, and the song Tommy Morello and I are about to sing I wrote in the mid-nineties and it started as a conversation I was having with myself. It was an attempt to regain my own moorings. Its last verse is the beautiful speech that Tom Joad whispers to his mother at the end of The Grapes of Wrath.
...Wherever there's a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight 'gainst the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me Mom I'll be there.
Well, Pete has always been there.
For me that speech is always aspirational. For Pete, it's simply been a way of life. The singer in my song is in search of the ghost of Tom Joad. The spirit who has the guts and toughness to carry forth, to fight for and live their ideals.
I'm happy to report that spirit, the very ghost of Tom Joad is with us in the flesh tonight. He'll be on this stage momentarily, he's gonna look an awful lot like your granddad who wears flannel shirts and funny hats. He's gonna look like your granddad if your granddad could kick your ass.
This is for Pete...

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up
Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.

Riding With The Angels [Lyrics]
Katie was a kid, I guess she hid her thoughts from everyone
Went to school at eight, she was never late
Didn't know the meaning of fun
Every night Katie prayed to God above
But her daddy gave her everything but love
She woke up one day, said: I'm on my way
Her mummy read the letter, It did say:
I'm on my way, I'm on my way
Riding with the angels
She's having fun fun fun
Rode around and every boy in town tried to win her back
It was no go, cause she rode with Joe, he was the leader of the pack
People ran for cover when they rolled to town
The night was black, rain on the ground
Engines scream, running too fast
They knew the ride would be there last
They're on their way,
They're on their way
Riding with the angels
She's having fun fun fun

'Riding With The Angels' is a song from the ''Riding With The Angels'' single by Samson, released in 1981.
Samson was a British hard rock band formed in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Paul Samson. They are best known for their first three albums with future Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, then known as Bruce Bruce, and drummer Thunderstick (real name Barry Graham), who wore a leather mask and performed on stage in a metal cage. Drummer Clive Burr was also member of the band, both before and after his tenure with Iron Maiden. Drummer Mel Gaynor also had a successful music career being a member of Simple Minds for over 20 years.
In a gig by hard rock band Samson at Bishop's Stortford, Dickinson came onstage and performed one of their songs, Rock Me Baby.He was offered the job as the band's vocalist immediately. They released their debut album, Survivors, in 1979 on an independent label. Dickinson did not appear on the original version, as it had been completed two months before he joined them.During his time in Samson, he went by the name Bruce Bruce, derived from Monty Python's Bruces sketch. The other band members knew they had improved things by hiring Dickinson, but it took some time for the fans to catch up.Dickinson was shocked after finding out that all rock performers were not as great artists as he had thought them to be.Most of them, like Samson, didn't think of popularity, but just to have a good drink, a good shag, and take some drugs. It was very difficult for him to relate to that kind of living. He had smoked before, but in Samson it was more like a habit. Dickinson had to smoke joints in order to communicate with other band members. He called it, the price that had to be paid, as it was a step towards his goal being a rock n' roll singer.

Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello - The ghost of Tom Joad (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 2009)
Man walks along the railroad track
He's goin' some place, there's no turnin' back
The Highway Patrol chopper comin' up over the ridge
Man sleeps by a campfire under the bridge
The shelter line stretchin' around the corner
Welcome to the New World Order
Families sleepin' in their cars out in the Southwest
No job, no home, no peace, no rest, no rest
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad
He pulls his prayer book out of a sleepin' bag
The preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag
He's waitin' for the time when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
With a one way ticket to the promised land
With a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Lookin' for a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the cities' aqueducts
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad
Solo
Now Tom Said; Ma, whenever ya see a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry new born baby cries
Wherever there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me ma
I'll be there
Wherever somebody's srtugglin' for a place to stand
For a decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody is strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes ma,
You'll see me
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of Tom Joad

Bruce Springsteen Perth Highway To Hell (AC/DC Cover) 8 February 2014
Bruce delivered a big surprise to his fans on hid third night in Perth - a first ever rendition by the E Street band of AC/DC's Highway to Hell. Perth was Bon's home town from the age of 10 and he is buried here in Fremantle cemetery so I think that is why Bruce treated the Perth fans with this cover. And wow - what an opener it was, got the whole crowd up right from the start.
Filmed from RHS GA floor not far back. Missed start of song - first few chords - as so surprised I had to get the phone out and then I hit the camera instead of video button, otherwise the whole song is there right up to the start of Badlands. Bit wobbly in parts as I was holding a drink in the other hand with no where to out it. First minute or so in near darkness. Towards the end someone held up a sign and the focus went so I tried to zoom in and it gets a bit iffy. Well worth a look, good sound quality.
Chicken Lips & Lizard Hips covered by Bruce Springsteen
Another song in Bruce's catalog that was not written by Bruce. It was recorded in July of 1990 at Thrill Hill West in Los Angeles, CA at the same time as Pony Boy. There were two completed takes of the song. One is a solo with Bruce alone. The other is a different recording and with added vocals by Patti Scialfa. It was written by John and Nancy Cassidy and Bruce's solo recording of the song was released in January 1991 on the Disney Records album For Our Children, a benefit record for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, as well as a single in Australia in March of 1991. It's never been performed live.
