Karuk Tribe, Karuk Climate Adaptation Plan, Karuk Tribe, 2019
Excerpted, p. 42-45
The exceptional biological diversity of the mid-Klamath River region Northern California has emerged in conjunction with sophisticated Karuk land management practices, including the regulation of the forest and fisheries through ceremony and the use of fire. Karuk management practices have been interrupted by genocide and ongoing presence of non-Native land management practices. In particular the exclusion of fire has led to radical ecological changes including high fuel loads, decreased habitat for large game such as elk and deer, reduction in the quantity and quality of acorns, and alteration of growth patterns of basketry materials such as hazel and willow. Across California the increasing frequency of high severity fire points to the need to re-examine human relationships with fire.
Karuk People have historically used fire for millennia. While fire can be incredibly dangerous, it is an inevitable part of natural ecosystems, especially in lightning-prone forested areas such as the mid-Klamath. Forested areas in northern California have become adapted to frequent occurrence of relatively low intensity fire from human and natural ignitions for more than the past 1,000 years (Perry et al. 2011, Taylor et al 2016).
Karuk use of fire has been central to the evolution of the flora and fauna of the mid- Klamath (Anderson 2005, Lake 2007 and 2013, Lake et al. 2010, Skinner et al. 2006).
These fire adapted forests burned in smaller overall areas in mosaic patterns with patches of high intensity fire (Mohr et al. 2000, Skinner et al. 2006, Perry et al. 2011). Fire has long been an important tool to manipulate landscape to patch-scale fire necessary for Karuk cultural sustenance and well-being (Lake 2013). Indeed, Karuk culture is directly dependent on mixed fire severity regimes (Lake 2007, Norgaard 2014). Karuk fire management practices include burning at a specific season, frequency, and intensity at a variety of severities. This frequent, low-intensity fire is linked with various fire-adapted vegetation communities and it necessary for the maintenance of cultural resources. Fire is especially critical for restoring grasslands for elk, managing for food sources including tanoak and black oak acorns, maintaining quality basketry materials, producing smoke that shades the river for fish, and more.
The passage of the Weeks Act in 1911 following the Big Burn of 1910, made cultural uses of fire essentially illegal and for the many decades following, less and less burning occurred while more and more vegetation grew. Over a century of policies of fire suppression have created the conditions for the catastrophic, high-intensity wildfires we are seeing today. Warming temperatures and summer droughts further exacerbate these conditions.
In the context of climate change, Karuk tribal knowledge and management principles regarding the use of fire are being utilized to reduce the likelihood of high severity fires. Fortunately, in the face of the changing climate, many ecologists, fire scientists and policy makers, Native and non-Native alike have turned to indigenous knowledge and management practices with renewed interest and optimism in the hope that they may provide a much-needed path towards both adaptation and reducing emissions (Williams and Hardison 2013, Martinez 2011, Raygorodetsky 2011, Vinyeta and Lynn 2013, Whyte 2013, Wildcat 2009).

Jeff Breitenstein and Skottie O’Mahony’s Tanglewild Garden’s a state of mind as much as a design, botanical, and daylily hybridizing adventure. After trading Seattle for Austin, they renovated a 1970s house and bland setting into a Moroccan-styled courtyard, moon garden, and intimate outdoor living framed by leafy and colorful plants. Members of the Austin Daylily Society and an American Daylily Society official display garden, discover how they propagate and grow over 1000 cultivars of drought-hardy, edible daylilies. Deeply inspired by plants and global experiences with Jeff, Skottie’s taken his imaginative digital art online as custom-designed SkotoArt.

The toll of depression and PTSD among police and their families | ABC News In-depth
Michelle Schlitter holds the memory of her husband dear. A year ago, Bruce Cooper took his own life. Mr Cooper was a police officer for 20 years, first in NSW and then Queensland. He loved the job but also witnessed terrible things that haunted him — car accidents, suicides and murders. He was medically retired in 2008, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.
The struggle with PTSD is all too common.
A nationwide survey by Beyond Blue found 11 per cent of police had probable PTSD, compared with 4 per cent of the general population.
After retiring from the police force, Mr Cooper got in contact with Blue Hope, an organisation independent of the police service, which supports current and former officers.
Blue Hope director Mark Kelly, who is a former federal agent with the Australian Federal Police, remembers Mr Cooper well.
“He had seen a lot of trauma in his life, within the police and external to the police, and had never been able to resolve it.”
Ms Schlitter vows to fight on for her husband and is preparing for a trip to Africa later this year to trek Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Blue Hope.

How to Install an Outlet into a Masonry Wall
How to install an outlet into a masonry wall.
Learn how the pros add an outlet box (or technically a receptacle) to a solid masonry wall. This was common 80 years ago, but many DIYers may not know how this is done!
First we're going to take a diamond wheel and a grinder, and maybe a shop vac to control dust, and we're going to grind out the shape of the electrical box.
Then, we're going to cut a pathway down the wall and chisel out the remaining material to allow a nice chase for the wire to run.
Next, we're going to drill around the perimeter of the box with a masonry drill to try to remove more of the material. The rest of it can be chiseled out with a masonry chisel.
Next, we drill from our pathway for the wire into the box chamber so that our wire can fit nicely in place. Yours might be slightly different, but you get the idea.
Now once everything fits into place, we can seat the box into the wall with some expanding spray foam. Now what I've done ahead of time is cut a prop stick for it so that once I spray it, I can prop it in place and let it dry overnight so that it sits nice and tight.
In our case, we ran Romex down the wall, but in some local areas you need to use shielded cable like MC wire or something, but you get the idea there too.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
A think tank or policy institute is a research institute/center and organization which performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology, and culture. Most policy institutes are non-profit organisations, which some countries such as the United States and Canada provide with tax exempt status. Other think tanks are funded by governments, advocacy groups, or corporations, and derive revenue from consulting or research work related to their projects. The following article lists global policy institutes according to continental categories, and then sub-categories by country within those areas. These listings are not comprehensive, given that more than 7,500 think tanks exist worldwide.
