Beautiful Flowers - Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens
Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens
one of Canada's largest and publicly owned collections of rhododendrons. Situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario in the heart of Mississauga, the unique microclimate and massive white pines of the Garden nourish and shelter the rhododendrons which were generously donated by the late Dr. Joseph Brueckner.
After years of careful study and experiment-ation in New Brunswick and later in Mississauga, Joe Brueckner launched an extensive breeding program to develop cold-hardy rhododendrons that were tolerant of the eastern Canadian climate but retained the attractive qualities of well-known species of rhodies. Bluenose, Nahanni, Karin Seleger, Toronto, Lionel's Red Shield, Igloo, are some of the 19 registered hybrids that issued from this work. Joe Brueckner was an acknowledged expert on rhododendrons and a recognized hybridizer. His hybrids are still in propagation and are valued plants in North America and several European countries as well as England's famous Exbury Gardens. The extensive notes and correspondence from the Brueckner plant breeding program are housed in the University of Virginia Archives.
When Dr. Brueckner donated over 800 azaleas and rhododendrons from his private collection, he included the species and cultivars that form a rare collection in the Garden.
The woodland garden setting has been
designed to highlight the beauty of the rhododendron / azalea display, and to
integrate companion perennials and shrubs in order to provide a four-season garden presence. Please visit the Garden at any time of the year particularly from early May to the end of June to experience the spectacular floral display.

Bobcat preparing a bioswale -- a drainage ditch - on the east side of Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens in Mississauga Ontario Canada. The bioswale has now been planted with native wildflowers, and a footbridge installed to allow easy access across the bioswale.
A high water table and low lying land combine to create a pond after rains or snow melt. The bioswale will be left in a natural state and will improve drainage into Tecumseh Creek.

Rhododendron Gardens Lake Ontario Shoreline in Mississauga
Lake Ontario on a freezing cold spring day, with the wind howling from the south east. Filmed at Brueckner Rhododendron Garden in Port Credit (Mississauga) Ontario Canada. Too cold and windy for the birds, and yes, I froze my fingers. Well, not really. But they were really, really cold! This video is my first upload via Share option on iMovie. The first upload defaulted to the Mobile resolution - a little grainy. Testing to see if this version has good resolution. This is the widescreen option. On the later version, I used a different option.

Red Squirrels Brueckner Rhododendron Garden Mississauga Ontario
Red Squirrels getting ready for winter in Port Credit. I finally caught these fast little critters on film, though they're rarely still for long. And feisty, too - take on much larger animals, like the grey squirrel they take a run at.
We had only ever seen one, in passing, or so we thought. But today, I captured two of them on film.

Tree Carving 1 - Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens
The City recently renamed Rhododendron Gardens to Brueckner Rhododendron Garden in acknowledgement of the donation of hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas that beautify the Garden, the scientific endeavour that was invested in creating internationally recognized registered hybrids many of which can be found in the Garden, and the inspiration to develop a public space that is uniquely garden space and not a public park. Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens is located at 660 Lakeshore Road West and is a 17.78 acre, 7.19 hectare city waterfront Garden Park which was acquired in 1975. The park was formerly called Cranberry Cove.
Through the generous donations and efforts of Dr. Joseph Brueckner, hundreds of his rhododendrons are planted in the gardens which can be found blooming from mid May to mid June. The gardens exhibit existing conditions and a micro-climate that are essential to the survival of the rhododendron shrubs. The sheltering presence of pines and oaks provide shelter from direct sunlight and protection from the wind. Well drained soil, and moderating lake effects combine to make conditions ideal for rhododendrons, azaleas and other acid loving woodland and mountain plants. Click here for more information.
