10 minutes | The Bruges Markt, Belgium
The Markt (Market Square) of Bruges is located in the heart of the city and covers an area of about 1 hectare. Some historical highlights around the square include the 12th-century belfry and the Provincial Court (originally the Waterhall, which in 1787 was demolished and replaced by a classicist building that from 1850 served as provincial court and after a fire in 1878 was rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style in 1887. In the center of the market stands the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck.
In 1995 the market was completely renovated. Parking in the square was removed and the area became mostly traffic-free, thus being more celebration friendly. The renovated market was reopened in 1996 with a concert by Helmut Lotti.

Well, Hello and welcome to Brugge! We are excited to explore the city. We just got here in the afternoon. The light is perfect, the day is beautiful and we're going to go explore and see what the city is all about.
Once in Bruges we set off to see the Old Town. We watched horse-drawn carriages roll down the square, admired the buildings, and visited chocolate shops because if there's one thing you have to do in Belgium, it's sample all their delicious chocolate.
So good morning. It is the start of day 2 here in Bruges, so we're going to continue sightseeing. I think the first order of business is to try and find a boat so we can take a little tour down the canals and maybe after that we'll start thinking about food. I know there is a few Belgian dishes that we're itching to try so let's get started with the day.
We started off the morning with a cruise down the canals. Like many cities in Europe, Bruges too has earned the nickname 'The Venice of the North' due to the numerous waterways that run through the city. It was a great way to get a closer look at the city, and it didn't hurt that we had swans to keep us company.
So we have a very exciting taste test coming up today. We are in Bruges, Belgium and that means we have to try Belgian fries. Not French fries. So let's get a look at that and then I'm going to give you a bit of the history behind it.
So there is a bit of a heated debate about whether fries or French fries or Belgian fries. Where exactly did they originate? So our tour guide yesterday was telling us that apparently during World War I there were a lot of British and American soldiers who were between Belgium and France and sometimes they didn't know what country they were in. All they knew is that they could hear French being spoken. So they assumed we must be in France and these must be French Fries.
So it is time for our last taste test here in Belgium, so we stopped by a chocolate shop to pick up some hand made chocolate. And the Belgians actually used to have a colony in Africa, so that meant cocoa beans, and plenty of time to perfect the art of chocolate making. So that means today they are one of the leading experts in chocolate production, so today is a chocolate taste test.
Waffles! Waffles! We are having waffles!
Well, considering today is our last full day in Belgium we couldn't leave the country without trying at least one Belgian waffle.
And to prove its authenticity it even has a Belgian flag. Why don't you take out that flag and wave it. Come on, go wave it.

Belgian waffles, dun da da dun da da.
Belgian waffles. dun da da dun dah.
So the funny thing about Belgian waffles is that there is no such thing as Belgian waffles in Belgium.
Sure, in North America we call them Belgium waffles but here they are just regular old waffles.
And that is only because we have crappy waffles. Yes, we have to put them in the toaster. We usually buy them from the frozen section in Canada.
But anyway, what sets these waffles apart is that they are a lot larger, a lot fluffier and the squares are a lot bigger than your average waffles that you buy from the frozen section back in North America. So let's dig in before this starts melting.

BRUGGE, Belgium - Bikes and Buses
Fall paradise of Brugge. The food is expensive but the hotels don't have to be. Quick train ride to and from many other interesting places. In the north half of Belgium the language is Dutch (French in the South). So the music is a complex arrangement from a well known Dutch group of the 1960s by the name of Group 1850.
Most of the streets are paved in Belgian Block, the same type used by New York City. These are NOT cobblestones! Cobblestones are small rounded stones predating the use of shaped, quarried granite blocks.
In the rather large yet walkable historic center, the streets are shared. In two days I never heard the plaintive whine of a frustrated motorist's horn.
Weekend in Bruges
Two days in Brugges might be very busy trip, but it is feasible to visit most of the museums and galleries, taste delicious sweets, simply walk around the city and enjoy stunning view from the tower and even spend couple of horus checking several sorts of belgium bier. Just like in In Bruges.

With the exhibition in the Grand Seminary, the Bruges triennial offers a historical and theoretical counterpart to the contemporary architecture and art route in the city centre. The FRAC (Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain) in Orléans, known for its impressive collection of architectural drawings and models, has made a selection from its collection to exhibit in the church of the Grand Seminary. The selection of drawings, plans and models is organized around the theme of Liquid City, considered from a historical perspective. The projects selected fit into this aspect from a diversity of perspectives: architecture, sociology and biology. Twentieth-century designs that were seen as radical at the time are more relevant than ever today. Concepts by Peter Eisenman, Aglaia Konrad, Ionel Schein, David Georges Emmerich, Zaha Hadid and others make us dream of a new form of urbanism, a vision of the present and the future. In the Grand Seminary, we will listen to director and curator of the FRAC, Abdelkader Damani, in conversation with the two curators of the Triennial, Michel Dewilde and Till-Holger Borchert, moderated by Caroline Voet (KU Leuven University).

Bruges (Dutch: Brugge]; French: Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country.
The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 1,075 hectares off the coast, at Zeebrugge (from Brugge aan zee meaning Bruges on Sea). The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is oval-shaped and about 430 hectares in size. The city's total population is 117,073 (1 January 2008), of whom around 20,000 live in the city centre. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 616 km2 (238 sq mi) and has a total of 255,844 inhabitants as of 1 January 2008.
Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam and Stockholm, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance thanks to its port and was once the chief commercial city in the world. Bruges is well known as the seat of the College of Europe, an elite university institute for European studies regarded as the EU's very own Oxbridge.
