A walk through of the Brunner Mine November 2013
A brief tour of the Brunner mine, Grey Valley - near Greymouth, NZ. This was a major coal bearing site, instrumental in kick starting NZ's Industrial Revolution. First 'discovered' in 1848 by Thomas Brunner, it wasn't officially operating until 1864. In 1896 a massive explosion occurred killing all the men working underground. It ceased operating in 1942. The site is now one of major national heritage significance to NZ and is open to the public 24/7.

Brunner Mine Trip
Room 17 went on a great trip to the Brunner Mine Site.
Brunner Mine. Part 1.
The Brunner Mine site is located 11 km east of Greymouth and can be accessed from either SH7 just east of Dobson where the old Tyneside Chimney is an obvious landmark, or across the river on the Taylorville Road next to the Brunner commemorative statue. Both sides of the mine site are linked by the Brunner Suspension Bridge.
This was one of the country's earliest industrial sites where coal was mined and coke, firebricks and other products were manufactured from the 1860s until the 1940s. The area is well interpreted with a short walk around the historic coke ovens, brick factory and the remains of tunnel entrances.

West Coast - Brunner Mine Site with Mum
Alot of this footage was quite shaky and off colour, so I apologize for that. I tried to salvage as much as I could. Wouldn't mind getting a proper camera and doing a re-shoot.

Today all that visibly remains of the mine and its related industry are the remains of the old coke ovens on the north side of the river, as well as the memorial at that location listing the names of the miners killed. Not to mention the graves in Stillwater cemetery, including one mass grave containing the bodies of 33 of the miners killed. The entrance to the mine has long been engulfed by the bush, as have any trace of the bustling industry that once existed on that spot. The chimney on the south bank between the road and railway line has often been associated with the Brunner Mine, but was actually part of the Tyneside Mine on the south side of the river.

Shantytown, West Coast.
Shantytown is a tourist attraction in the West Coast Region of the South Island of New Zealand. Located 10 km south of Greymouth, the town was constructed and opened in the early 1970s and consists of 30 plus re-created historic buildings making up a 19th-century gold-mining town. The town is surrounded by native forest, and is one of the region's most popular attractions.
Shantytown also contains a re-created narrow-gauge bush tram line that follows a 19th-century sawmill tram track from the Shantytown train station to a stop at the Infants Creek Sawmill and a terminus.
Other attractions include having an old time photo in costume taken, a holographic theatre show, and a playground. Short bush walks around the area lead to a surveyors monument and lookout.
The town's inter-denominational church, built in 1866, can be booked for weddings, Shantytown offers a cafe and souvenir shop, and is open all year round with the exception of Christmas Day.

The last video from my South Island trip. Hailing from a coal mining family, I felt the need to visit the site of the Brunner coal mine disaster, where 65 men and boys lost their lives. This is my attempt at a tribute video. If you're ever on the West Coast call in a experience this site. Hope you can take something from this.

Brunner on the Buller - Roadside Stories
In late 1846, with his Māori guides Kehu and Pikewate, surveyor Thomas Brunner set off on an epic journey down the Buller River and to the West Coast. The group battled hunger, illness, injury and terrible weather, and it was 18 months before Brunner encountered another European.

MINE DISASTER - SOUND
By far the worst mining disaster in recent New Zealand history, at the Strongman State Coalmine with nineteen man killed instantly by a sudden explosion. Hampering the efforts of rescuers, fire breaks out in the mine making it impossible to recover the bodies of four of those killed in the blast. Cement and timber is taken below to seal the fire off and experts consider it may be many months before the section can be re-entered. At Greymouth an air of tragedy and shock as the funeral cortege moves towards a combined burial service.
