Belgium: The City of Mechelen
Mechelen is a city and municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders.
As the river Dijle flows through the city, Mechelen is often referred to as the Dijlestad (City on the river Dijle).
It is one of Flanders' prominent cities of historical art, with Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, and Leuven. It was notably a centre for artistic production during the Northern Renaissance.
There are many places of interest in this city. Some of them belong to the UNESCO World Heritage, like the St. Rumbold's Cathedral (Sint-Romboutskathedraal) with its dominating tower and the city gate: the Brusselpoort, the last remaining of the city's twelve gates.
Other interesting builidings and spots are the Lakenhal (hall for merchants of woollen cloth) and the 14th century Belfry beside it, they form now the City Hall at the Grand Market square.
The Klein Begijnhof and the Groot Begijnhof (Small and Large Béguinages).
The Refuge of Sint-Truiden and the Refuge of Tongerlo, retreat mansions for distant abbeys.
't Groen Waterke, a picturesque small remnant of bygone canals.
These are just a few of them.
Also there are many interesting facades when you go for a walk in the old center.

Heb je er jezelf al op betrapt dat je schrok van je eigen schaduw? Het bewijs is geleverd: de theatrale zeggingskracht van schimmen en schaduwen laat zelfs de stoerse blikken niet koud.
Daarom organiseerde Het Firmament, (t)Huis voor figurentheater, de workshop 'Schimmer dan je schaduw'. En een fantastisch staaltje schimmenspel aan de Brusselpoort - het ideale decor voor een schimschitterend spectakel. Tussen de beide torens van de oude stadspoorten hangen twee gigantische doeken. Daarop toveren de lichtkunstenaars een weergaloos palet van oud en nieuw schimmenspel tevoorschijn. Een beproefde remedie tegen een koude, barre winteravond...

Erfgoedmobiel - Mechelse Ommegang - Editie Erfgoeddag
In de aanloop naar de Mechelse Ommegang op 25 augustus en 1 september 2013 maak je in de aangroeiende expo Erfgoedmobiel alvast kennis met deze grootse stoet.
Speciaal voor Erfgoeddag belichtten we het restauratieproces van de drie reuzenkinderen en het maken van de nieuwe lichamen. Bovendien kreeg je in primeur de nieuwe gelegenheidsoutfit van de kinderen en het Rad van Fortuin te zien; een creatie van de Stikbitchen en de wildbreiers en -hakers.

Mechelen (locally pronounced [ˈmɛ.x̟ə.l̪ə(n̪)] ( ), French Malines, traditional English Mechlin) is a city and municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium. The municipality comprises the city of Mechelen proper, some quarters at its outskirts, the hamlets of Nekkerspoel (adjacent) and Battel (a few kilometers away), as well as the villages of Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek, and Muizen. The Dijle flows through the city, hence it is often referred to as the Dijlestad (City on the river Dijle).
Mechelen lies on the major urban and industrial axis Brussels-Antwerp, about 25 km from each city. Inhabitants find employment at Mechelen's southern industrial and northern office estates, as well as at offices or industry near the capital and Zaventem Airport, or at industrial plants near Antwerp's seaport.

10 oktober 2009 Tevreden bewoners en het handelscomité Binnenstad-Zuid hieven vrijdag samen met burgemeester Bart Somers en schepen Greet Geypen (beide Open Vld) het glas op de heraangelegde Brusselpoortstraat. De voet- en fietspaden en de rijbaan werden volledig vernieuwd.

De rijke geschiedenis van Mechelen
De Oppas van Iedereen Beroemd past op de kinderen, zo kunnen Tim en Mieke op citytrip naar Mechelen. Ze worden helemaal stil in Kazerne Dossin, genieten van hippe hapjes in De Vleeshalle en verwonderen zich in Museum Hof van Busleyden.
Historisch en culinair Mechelen
Kazerne Dossin is in de eerste plaats een museum over de vervolging van Joden en zigeuners in België tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog. Maar het museum laat je ook stil staan bij de mechanismes en gevolgen van massageweld. Voor culinaire hoogstandjes kan je terecht in De Vleeshalle. Twaalf standhouders en een pop-up toveren er elke dag pareltjes op je bord. Museum Hof van Busleyden is een prachtig renaissance stadspaleis. Je stapt er in de voetsporen van Hiëronymus van Busleyden, Margareta Van Oostenrijk, Erasmus en Thomas More. Gouden kubussen met leuke, interessante en afwisselende opdrachten vormen de rode draad van het familieparcours waardoor het museum een aanrader is voor groot en klein.
Bourgondische hoogstandjes
Het rijke Bourgondische verleden van Mechelen kan je uitgebreid ontdekken met de handige wandelbrochure “In de Voetsporen van Margareta”. Deze bloeitijd liet veel sporen na in de stad die je vandaag nog steeds kan ontdekken: paleizen, kerken, houten gevels en rijk versierde gildehuizen. Een bezoek aan Mechelen is niet compleet zonder de beklimming van de 97m hoge Sint-Romboutstoren. De skywalk op de top geeft je een fantastisch uitzicht over de omgeving. Maar ook de beklimming zelf is dankzij de bezoekersgids een ontdekkingstocht voor jong en oud.

Archeologische opgravingen in Mechelen-boek deel 6
Op 6 juni verschijnt Deel 6 in de reeks Opgetekend Verleden, een publicatiereeks van de Mechelse Vereniging voor Stadsarcheologie (MVSA vzw) rond archeologie in en rond Mechelen.
Deel 6 bevat onder meer een bundeling van een reeks artikels over een opgraving in het Dominicanenklooster door de vroegere Mechelse Vereniging voor Archeologie (MVA), die meer dan dertig jaar geleden in het tijdschrift van de MVA zijn verschenen. Door de nakende restauratie staat dit voormalige klooster weer in de schijnwerpers. Verder zijn in het 124 bladzijden tellende boek bijdragen opgenomen over de gevarieerde middeleeuwse ceramiek uit de opgraving van de Grote Markt, over de opgravingen in de St.-Romboutskathedraal in 2013, over vondsten uit steentijdsites in Mechelen, over religieuze beeldjes uit de late middeleeuwen uit de opgravingen van de Grote Markt, de Begijnenstraat en de site Euroshopping/Clarenhof, over pijpaarden figuurtjes uit schietkramen, over een bijzondere halve keurvorstenkruik van het St.-Romboutskerkhof, over de opgraving in het vroegere Arresthuis en over enkele losse vondsten. Tenslotte is er ook een ruim werkverslag van de Mechelse Stedelijke Dienst Archeologie over de periode 2009-2011.
