Buccaneer State Park With 2 Traveling Dogs
Some places have a way of welcoming you like you’ve been there before. We’ve been here before ???? But we are so thankful to Waveland, Mississippi and Buccaneer State Park for giving us a wonderful week of beach time, a trail and a perfect, walk up campsite.
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, the most devastating storm in the history of the United States, came ashore. Winds of over 160 MPH and a tidal surge of nearly 30 feet completely destroyed all of Buccaneer State Park's structures, waterpark and support facilities. The park has been under varying stages of reconstruction over the last eight years. The final phase of reconstruction was completed in November of 2013. Today, Buccaneer has been beautifully restored.
Buccaneer State Park has 206 premium campsites with full amenities. In addition to the premium sites, Buccaneer has an additional 70 campsites that are set on a grassy field overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

STORYLINE:
Mississippi''s confirmed death toll from Hurricane Katrina rose to 126 on Thursday as more rescue teams spread out into a sea of rubble to search for the living, their efforts complicated by the threat of a thunderstorm.
All along the 90-mile coast, other emergency workers performed the grisly task of retrieving corpses, some of them lying on streets and amid the ruins of obliterated homes that stretch back blocks from the beach.
Adding to the misery were tons of rotting shrimp and chicken, blown from their containers at a shipping dock and dumped into the water and onto the tattered landscape.
The entire state of Mississippi is hurting.
On Wednesday, crews began retrieving bodies in Waveland.
One of the hardest hit towns, police and others drove past obliterated homes in pickups stopping where bodies had been spotted by officials or reported by family or neighbours.
Rescue teams from other states joined the search for survivors among the rubble and destruction.
One worker from Virginia Task Force 2 said his team so far has only uncovered the dead.
Driving through Waveland, the only visible indicator of where houses once sat are now their foundations.
Rotting remains of animals and the contents of people''s refrigerators are strewn amongst the debris.
In one instance, a woman''s body was laid out on a sidewalk in front of a single-story brick apartment complex.
A flower-patterned curtain covered her body, her arms outstretched.
Police didn''t know her name. Someone anonymously called police and told them where to find her.

MS Aquarium Groundbreaking
GULFPORT, MISS. – The highly anticipated Mississippi Aquarium, which is scheduled to open in late 2019/early 2020, held its construction kick-off on May 11th at 1:00pm. The ceremony was open to the public and marked an important step forward in economic development for the State of Mississippi, the Gulf Coast and the City of Gulfport.
“With Gulfport’s leadership embracing the vision of bringing a world-class aquarium to the Coast, we are now seeing a development boom occurring in the surrounding communities and across our region,” said Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes. “It is a matter of time until the transformational impact of this project helps to change the look of Mississippi’s coastline. Today’s construction kick-off is monumental for all of our State – for now, and for generations to come!”
Students from Gulfport High School participated in “Hoisting of the Sails”. The sails in Mississippi Aquarium’s logo represent the Aquarium’s core values: education, conservation and community.
The renderings of the Aquarium revealed showcase Mississippi Aquarium’s 12 animal habitats, including North American River Otters, American Alligators, Shorebirds and Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins. The site sits on 5.8 acres with over 80,000 square feet of exhibit space. The Mississippi Aquarium’s impact will attract visitors, create jobs, promote and enhance marine research and inspire educational awareness.
“Mississippi Aquarium is designed to highlight our river and coastal heritage, as well as serve as an educational enriching hub to aquatic understanding,” said David Kimmel, CEO & President of Mississippi Aquarium. “I am so excited to finally see all of our planning becoming a reality.”
In attendance at the “Sail”ebration included Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, City of Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes and Gulfport City Council, U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, John Hairston of Hancock Whitney Bank and Carole Lynn Meadows, Chairperson of Gulfport Redevelopment Commission.
