Walk with me through the Jewish Quarter of Budapest
Join me on my Budapest Jewish Quarter walking tour at
You probably know the Budapest Jewish district for it's ruin pubs (Szimpla Kert, Fogasház, Instant), night life and gozsdu udvar party district. But there is more to that than this, and it is a very important part of the history of Budapest.
You might think that I am Jewish, based on my name. Sorry to disappoint, but I am not. My name Levi is short for Levente, which is a Hungarian name.
However, I did study a lot of Jewish history and culture, and have been immersed into how they were instrumental to the development of Budapest as a city. Because of that, this is one of my favourite tours to do.
My passion is to teach and share my stories and knowledge with people. I love to talk and I would love for you to listen and join me on this or any of my other tours. Budapest is a vibrant and trendy city now and I would love to show you my take.

Wikipedia:
Erzsébetváros ( Elizabethtown) is the 7th district of Budapest, situated on the Pest side of the Danube. The inner half of the district was the historic Jewish quarter of Pest. The Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest functioning synagogue in Europe, is located in this district. Currently it is the most densely populated district of Budapest with 29,681.3 person per km2. In 1910 Erzsébetváros had 152,454 inhabitants. During the socialist era Erzsébetváros's population decreased rapidly, because young people and families moved to the newer panelized boom districts. Gentrification and recovery started in the middle of the 2000s
The Dohány Street Synagogue (Hungarian: Dohány utcai zsinagóga / nagy zsinagóga; Hebrew: בית הכנסת הגדול של בודפשט, Bet ha-Knesset ha-Gadol shel Budapesht), also known as the Great Synagogue or Tabakgasse Synagogue, is a historical building in Erzsébetváros, the 7th district of Budapest, Hungary. It is the largest synagogue in Europe, seating 3,000 people and is a centre of Neolog Judaism.
The synagogue was built between 1854 and 1859 in the Moorish Revival style, with the decoration based chiefly on Islamic models from North Africa and medieval Spain (the Alhambra). The synagogue's Viennese architect, Ludwig Förster, believed that no distinctively Jewish architecture could be identified, and thus chose architectural forms that have been used by oriental ethnic groups that are related to the Israelite people, and in particular the Arabs. The interior design is partly by Frigyes Feszl.
The Dohány Street Synagogue complex consists of the Great Synagogue, the Heroes' Temple, the graveyard, the Memorial and the Jewish Museum, which was built on the site on which Theodor Herzl's house of birth stood. Dohány Street itself, a leafy street in the city center, carries strong Holocaust connotations as it constituted the border of the Budapest Ghetto

Budapest is a crazy cool place! This travel vlog is our first from Hungary and covers our exploring on the Pest side of Budapest. Today we visit (and drink at) some ruin bars & pubs, explore the cathedral known as St Stephens Basilica & walk around the Jewish Quarter.
Ruin pubs in Budapest are really popular - the bar scene in Budapest has a pretty good reputation globally! Prior to coming to Hungary we actually didn't know what a ruin bar was, so today we figured it out! One of our new fav type of pubs to travel around and explore.
St. Stephens Basilica is the largest church in Budapest and named after Saint Stephen of Hungary. Inside the church was stunning and definitely worth a visit on your travels around the city!
The Jewish Quarter of Budapest is home to a lot of the mentioned ruin bars and pubs, but offers a lot more as well. We loved walking around the streets here!

Jewish Quarter, Budapest
The Jewish district is the smallest in Budapest, yet it currently has the highest population density. This combination leads to an electric atmosphere – day and night – as the streets fill with a mix of happy locals and curious tourists.
The Jewish district is full with the historical remains of the Jewish community that once thrived here. There are three synagogues in the area with the Dohány Synagogue being the largest and, indeed, the second biggest in the entire world. Complete with a cemetery, a memorial garden and a museum, you can learn all about the Holocaust and the Budapest Ghetto that existed in this area. A small section of the wall, rebuilt from some of the originally-used bricks, still exists in the courtyard of a building on Király Street.
As you walk around, you’ll no doubt notice the narrow streets and passages – just like those on Gozsdu Udvar – connecting one long street with another. And, it’s on these streets that you’ll still find the bars and boutiques that make this area so interesting.
How to Travel in Budapest : How to Get to the Jewish District in Budapest
The Jewish District is a popular tourist destination in Budapest that should be a must-see for anyone new to the area. Learn more about the sights and sounds of Budapest in this free video series.

The City Park (Hungarian: Városliget;) is a public park close to the centre of Budapest, Hungary. It is a 0.9-by-0.6-mile (1,400 by 970 m) rectangle, with an area of 302 acres (1.2 km2), located in District XIV of Budapest, Its main entrance is at Heroes' Square (Hősök tere), one of Hungary's World Heritage sites.
Hősök tere ( Heroes' Square) is one of the major squares in Budapest, Hungary, noted for its iconic statue complex featuring the Seven chieftains of the Magyars and other important Hungarian national leaders, as well as the Memorial Stone of Heroes, often erroneously referred as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The square lies at the outbound end of Andrássy Avenue next to City Park (Városliget). It hosts the Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok. The square has played an important part in contemporary Hungarian history and has been a host to many political events, such as the reburial of Imre Nagy in 1989. The sculptures were made by sculptor Zala György from Lendava.
Vajdahunyad Castle is a castle in the City Park of Budapest, Hungary. Hi,

Communism Tour in Budapest, Hungary
The Budapest of today is very different from the Budapest of 50 years ago, mainly because back then the Communist Party reigned supreme and Hungary was in the grip of the Soviet Union. Although not a member, the country found itself inside the Eastern Bloc and most definitely inside the Soviet sphere of influence at the end of the second world war. Whilst in the city I took a walking tour to learn about how communism affected the city and its people, we visited some nuclear bunkers, the Imre Nagy Statue (since removed), the 1956 Hungarian Uprising Memorial and former headquarters of the Secret Police. A fascinating journey into Hungary's past.
