Budapest 2.0: Urban Revitalization and Placemaking
Grandiose architecture, gorgeous monuments, incredible vistas – these are all things that make Budapest a picture-perfect city and draw thousands of tourists every year.
While the rich history of Budapest surely fascinated me, what I found even more interesting was the creative ways in which the city is recreating itself through urban design. Budapest today has taken on a uniquely youthful energy with a whole new personality of urban revitalization.
Urban Revitalization, you ask?
Well, by that I mean implementing creative urban design ideas with the goal to bring new life and vitality to city spaces. In Budapest, for example, there is an ongoing effort to revitalize the old Jewish quarter and turn it into the city's entertainment capital.
In the past few years, the city has supported many artists in painting stunning murals on decrepit walls and has even held a Colourful City street art festival during which hundreds of such murals were painted. Furthermore, Budapest has become famous for it's “ruin bars”, which are basically crumbling old apartment buildings that were converted into nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and gardens when students started collecting used throw-away items, and experimenting with all kinds of crazy ways to put them to use. Now the Jewish district is filled with them, and has gained a lot more investment thanks to it's booming tourism industry.
Another thing that Budapest is great at is inviting unique urban design projects, such as this pop up park by the Hungarian instalation team “Hello Wood” and the “Terrace” summer exhibition that were happening during my visit. All in all, Budapest is a city that knows how to take advantage of what works and make the best of any challenge that comes it's way, because it is open to the initiatives that regular people start. That is why it is so important for cities to encourage their citizens to participate in the urban planning and design process to achieve a city that reflects the soul of it's inhabitants.

Jewish Quarter, Budapest
The Jewish district is the smallest in Budapest, yet it currently has the highest population density. This combination leads to an electric atmosphere – day and night – as the streets fill with a mix of happy locals and curious tourists.
The Jewish district is full with the historical remains of the Jewish community that once thrived here. There are three synagogues in the area with the Dohány Synagogue being the largest and, indeed, the second biggest in the entire world. Complete with a cemetery, a memorial garden and a museum, you can learn all about the Holocaust and the Budapest Ghetto that existed in this area. A small section of the wall, rebuilt from some of the originally-used bricks, still exists in the courtyard of a building on Király Street.
As you walk around, you’ll no doubt notice the narrow streets and passages – just like those on Gozsdu Udvar – connecting one long street with another. And, it’s on these streets that you’ll still find the bars and boutiques that make this area so interesting.
