Buddha Statue in the midst of Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad
Hussain Sagar is a lake in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, built by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562, during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. It was 5.7 square kilometres built on a tributary of the River Musi to meet the water and irrigation needs of the city. There is a large monolithic statue of the Gautam Buddha in the middle of the lake which was erected in 1992. At the end of the Hussain Sagar one can find the Masjid and Dargah of Sayedani Maa Tomb. Built in the 16th century, the lake was named to express the gratitude of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah to Hussain Shah Wali who helped him to recover from illness. It is a sprawling artificial lake that holds water perennially, built during the reign of Ibrahim Qutub Shah, across a tributary of the river Musi in 1562. Linking the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the lake and its environs have several parks and scenic spots. The broad road on the tank bund is lined with lawns, and statues of 33 famous personalities of the state (which are now partially destroyed) stand along the bund. The lake was notorious as a suicide location. This has reduced in the last few decades, possibly due to the worsening water quality.
An 18-meter high monolithic statue of Lord Buddha towers over the lake from atop the Rock of Gibraltar. The idea of erecting a giant monolith Buddha statue in the midst of Hussain Sagar Lake on the Gibraltar rock was a part of the Buddha Poornima project in 1985. The statue was chiseled out of a white granite rock, weighting 450 tons. It was carved by 200 sculptors for two years. The statue was transported to Hyderabad in November 1988. After initial problems, the statue was erected on 12 April 1992 on a red lotus pedestal. Attached to it, Lumbini Park was inaugurated with musical fountains, bonsai plants and a boat ride from Lumbini Park to the statue. The whole atmosphere reflects peace and perseverance.

Buddha Statue in the midst of Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad
Huge, landmark statue of Buddha in the middle of Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad, India. It is the world's tallest monolith of Gautama Buddha.
Hyderabad is the capital of the state of Telangana. Between 1983 and 1989, N. T. Rama Rao served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. During his tenure, he spent large sums to erect several statues of people from the region's political and religious history. During his visit to New York, he saw the Statue of Liberty and was inspired by the efforts to restore it. He said I wanted something like that ... That would have been my contribution to society.
Rama Rao chose to depict Gautama Buddha because he was a humanitarian who told the whole truth to the people. It is our pride. After a long search, he found a solid white granite rock near Nalgonda on a mountainside 40 miles outside Hyderabad. In October 1985 NTR inaugurated work on structure. For over a year, hundreds of labourers helped the temple architect and builder S.M.Ganapathi Sthapati create the statue. After five years and the expenditure of US$3 million, the statue stood at 58 feet (18 m) and weighed 350 tons, making it the world's tallest monolithic statue of the Buddha. A concrete platform measuring 15 feet (4.6 m), now referred to as the Rock of Gibraltar, was constructed in the middle of Hussain Sagar to aid in erecting the statue. The roads of the city were also widened for this purpose.
This statue is located at Lumbini Park in the Hussain Sagar Island can be reached by boat in 15 minutes.

Never Seen beauty of Buddha Statue Hyderabad
The year was 1984 and then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister NT Rama Rao was on a trip to New York, when he saw the Statue of Liberty.
NTR chose Buddha because he was a 'humanitarian', and was born in India himself as Prince Siddhartha.
After around a year of searching, NTR found a large granite rock near Bhongir in Telangana (then Andhra), and works were inaugurated in 1985. It was here Ganapathi was called upon.
According to a report in The Washington Post, Ganapathi supervised the work of hundreds of labourers for over a year, as they chipped and hammered away at the rock, until the giant statue was ready at the spot itself.

Buddha statue in Hussain Sagar, Hyderabad
Huge, landmark statue of Buddha in the middle of Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad, India. It is the world's tallest monolith of Gautama Buddha.
Hussain Sagar is a lake in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, built by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562, during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah. It is spread across an area of 5.7 square kilometers and is fed by River Musi. A large monolithic statue of the Gautama Buddha, erected in 1992 stands in an island in the middle of the lake. Maximum depth of the lake is 32 feet.
Hussain Sagar was built across a tributary of the river Musi river in 1562 by Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah. The lake was named after Hussain Shah Wali, who helped design it. It is an artificial lake that holds water perennially fed by canals from Musi river. Hussain Sagar was the main source of water supply to Hyderabad before Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar were built on river Musi.
The road on the Tank Bund was widened in 1946 when Sir Mirza Ismail was the prime minister of Hyderabad Deccan. Further widening and beautification of the Tank bund took place during 1987-88 with the addition of fountains with dancing waters, tantalizing colored lights at night and bronze statues.
Hussain Sagar Lake forms an important part of Hyderabad but now has become the main sewage collection zone of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. As a result of heavy anthropogenic pressures such as unplanned urbanization, the entire ecosystem of Hussain Sagar Lake has changed. The water quality has deteriorated considerably during the last three decades. The lake has become shallow due to siltation and accumulation of plant debris. A 2008 study of the lake's water and sediment has found that it has exceeded its eutrophic condition, reaching hypereutrophic status.[12] Many undesirable changes in the structure of biological communities have resulted, and some important species have either declined or completely disappeared. Realising the importance of conservation of Hussain Sagar Lake, a project has been formulated. This project shall be implemented by APPCB, Hyderabad, India. In this respect, a project feasibility report has been prepared for the approval and financing. In spite of the commission of a sewage treatment plant on the western side, large amount of untreated sewage and industrial effluents continue to flow into the lake.
