Myanmar ( Burma ) 2014/15, Katha - Bhamo - Pyay - Yangon, part 2/2 !
Bhamo is a city of Kachin State in the northernmost part of Myanmar, located 186 km south from the capital city of the state of Kachin, that is to say Myitkyina. It is on the Ayeyarwady River. It lies within 65 km of the border with Yunnan Province, China.
The population consists of Chinese and Shan, with Kachin peoples in the hills around the town. It is the administrative center of Bhamo District and Bhamo Township.
Pyay is principal town of Pyay Township in the Bago Region in Burma (Myanmar). Pyay is located on the Ayeyarwady River (Irrawaddy River) and is 260 km (160 mi) northwest of Yangon.
The British Irrawaddy Flotilla Company established the current town in the late 19th century on the Ayeyarwady River (Irrawaddy River) as a transshipment point for cargo between Upper and Lower Burma.
The district of Pyay encompasses the valley of the Ayeyarwady, located between Thayetmyo, Hinthada and Tharrawaddy districts. Along the western side of Pyay District are the Rakhine (Arakan) Yoma mountain ranges, and along the eastern side are the Bago (Pegu) Yoma mountain ranges. Pyay District's main towns are Pyay, Shwedaung, and Paungde

MYANMAR: EXPLORING the scenic STREET MARKETS in YANGON
#VicStefanu
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the fascinating country of Myanmar (Burma) in Southeast Asia and let's go to Yangon, the country's largest city. Early in the morning, we will visit a street market close to the city's large port, very iconic images here. Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). A mix of British colonial architecture, modern high-rises and gilded Buddhist pagodas define its skyline. Its famed Shwedagon Paya, a huge, shimmering pagoda complex, draws thousands of pilgrims annually. The city's other notable religious sites include the Botataung and Sule pagodas, both housing Buddhist relics.
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the country's largest city, is home to bustling markets, numerous parks and lakes, and the towering, gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, which contains Buddhist relics and dates to the 6th century.

Interest in photography came late in my life. As I grew up, I began traveling and photographing places and, above all, people that are distant from the modern western way of life. I take photographs from the heart, hoping to transmit these images and emotional experiences. The Greek poet Tasos Livaditis wrote, Only when you share it does the world exist, a phrase that perfectly sums up my need to share all this.
Burma (renamed Myanmar by the military dictatorship in 1989) has been ruled by one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world since 1962. The country and its people differ from the rest of Asia. As Kipling wrote, This is Burma, and it will be quite unlike any land you know about. More than a century later, Burma remains a world apart. It's like visiting a vast open-air museum, with time stopping in 1948, a beautiful country frozen in time, one of the most mysterious and unexplored destinations in the world, with a cultural heritage going back 2.500 years, whilst the warmest greetings of Asia await the visitors. Due to years of political isolation, it is one of the world's least technologically advanced and poorest countries, but the poverty one encounters everywhere, does not seem to have crushed the morale of its smiling people who suffer from the greatest human rights violations in the world.
Burma's amazing natural landscape, the picturesque villages and its vibrant culture, hide from the visitor the harsh reality that lurks beneath the surface. This for me is the most shocking thing about Burma: how this flagrant oppression of a whole nation of 55 million people, can exist and be perpetuated in a completely cloaked manner, as the country's rich visual imagery can divert your attention from the oppression of the people, the infringements and the undercurrent of sorrow.
Please use your freedom to promote ours' is their only request, as it was expressed by the Noble Peace Prize Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's icon of democracy, the woman who personifies all meaning of resistance, every hope for freedom. In a world in desperate need of heroes, she stands tall as one of the few moral resistance symbols left. Her message is very simple: only by defeating your fears you can be truly free.
My journeys to Burma were among the most amazing and revealing, that I have undertaken in my whole life. These photographs are a glimpse onto the hinterland of a forgotten country, where the people endure one of the worst regimes in the world with an incredible stoicism and dignity. The viciousness of the regime, the hardships, people's daily struggle for survival, the poverty, the kindness, the quiet dignity, as well as the hope, are documented through the camera lens, along with their souls. I considered it my obligation to offer this book trying to spread and share what I experienced during my stay there.

버마의 아파르트헤이트 Burma's Apartheid (Korean)

Sittwe, the capital of Arakan State in Western Burma has succeeded in virtually ‘Muslims-Free Street’ ever since the sectarian violence turned to be a massacre of Rohingya Muslims took place in 2012. From busy market to quiet alley, Muslims have been driven out to be seen nowhere. Yet they are found either IDPs Camp on the outskirt of Sittwe, or the last Muslims quarter of the city named Aung Mingalar.
The Camp is vast ghetto field sheltering more than a hundred of thousands Muslims. Aung Mingalar is a ‘ghetto in downtown’ which is surrounded by several checkpoints and invisible but vigilant Buddhists neighbors. It is nothing short of segregation motivated racially and religiously. And I call it ‘Burma’s Apartheid‘. First minutes featured the shooting incident by security forces occurred on Aug.9 2013 and aftermath.

Rohingya Protest in Washington - Burmese Embassy
Clashes between Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims have spread from Rakhine state to other areas of Burma. Both sides blame the other for the fighting, which has claimed hundreds of lives and forced tens of thousands from their homes since June 2012. A group of Rohingya Muslims from Burma, also known as Myanmar, have staged a brief demonstration outside the Burmese embassy in Washington. The group called on the government in Rangoon to stop violence and oppression against their community.
