Buduruwagala, Sri Lanka
Buduruwagala colossal Buddha statues carved in low relief into face of rock boulder are unlike other colossal Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. Buduruwagala is one of the few sites that have exerted Mahayana Buddhism. The largest Buddha statue with height of 16 meters was sculpted in the 16th century. The location of Buduruwagala just south of Wellawaya is lovely little patch of dry-zone forest teeming with birds and butterflies. Close to Buduruwagala is Handapangoda man-made rainwater reservoir.
Buduruwagala
Buduruvagala ie. the rock of Buddhist Sculptures is an ancient Buddhist monument found in the Monaragala district of Sri Lanka. Seven statues that date back to the 10th century can be seen carved out on this rock and it is believed that the statues belong to the Mahayana School of Thought.

Buduruwagala is situated in 5 km from the Wellawaya and on the Thanamalwila road. Seven statues are mead in this rock with large 51 foot Buddha staue in the Abhaya Mudra gesture at the centre. The rock it self has shape of a kneeling elephant with its head own to the front side. Although there is no documented information about this site in the old scriptures, Different archilogist have dated these statues from the 6th centuary to after Anuradhapura time period. Maligawila Monastery complex, near Butthala, Sri Lanka.
I saw the Maligawila Buddha statue first in 1966. The statue made of sandstone was lying horizontally on the ground and it was broken at the neck. Quite a lot of vandalism of these statues occurred to remove hidden treasures ('Nidhaana') secreted inside them. Mr.Premadasa our ex President was responsible to get this statue standing erect.

Sri Lanka Day 8 - Tissamaharama
Descent of 1000m; to Tissamaharama.
Descending 1000m we leave the breathtaking scenery of Uva Province for the gentle rolling hills of the dry zone, stopping at the impressive rock-cut Buddha Statues at Buduruvagala. The giant 15m rock carving of Buddha is flanked by small figures depicting his helpers and a very rare image of Maitreya, the future Buddha, which dates from the 10th Century. The tranquillity of the place is enhanced by the lotus-covered lake; on whose banks we can enjoy some fresh fruit before riding on to lunch. Here we can relax from the heat of the day, before the final 30km to Tissamaharama, the capital of the old Ruhuna Kingdom. Ride approx 102km.
