ARRIVING IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA | El Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore Buenos Aires
Today, we decided to take a little trip to Buenos Aires Argentina! We also visited, the world's most beautiful El Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore.
Just kidding - this trip has been in the works for three years or more now! It was a rather quick and easy journey for us because there's a direct flight from Atlanta to Buenos Aires with Delta Airlines, even though it is a red-eye!
While we typically enjoy independent travel, this time, we joined an organized tour for several reasons.
First, because we were going to #Antarctica and it is just about impossible to travel to Antarctica independently!
Second, we were here with Marathon Tours and Travel, a Boston-based tour company, so that Halef could run the Antarctica Marathon! We met their friendly staff at the arrival hall in EZE, and quickly boarded the bus to check into our hotel in Puerto Madero neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
We stayed in Alvear Icon Hotel in Puerto Madero, a sleek luxury hotel that overlooks the Buenos Aires skylines across from the canal. We really enjoyed our stay here!
In our free afternoon, we walked around the Buenos Aires city center, and we stopped by at the El Ateneo Grand Splendid - one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, according to National Geographic. The building was completed in 1919 as a performance art theater, and was converted into a movie theater and then a bookstore.
Many of the ornaments and architectural details are original since it was opened a hundred years ago.

The name of the neighborhood comes from the Monastery of the Recollect Fathers, members of the Franciscan Order which was established in the area at the beginning of the 18th century. They founded a monastery and a church dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Pilar with a cemetery attached. The Recoleta pathway is nearly the exact geographic center of the neighborhood, and one of its highest points in the city, which, at the end of the 19th century attracted wealthy families from the south of the city who sought to escape from the deadly yellow fever outbreak which began in 1871.

When Buenos Aires suffered terrible cholera and yellow fever epidemics in the 1870s, the population of the city spread out to avoid the contagion. The final resting place of Irish born William Brown, he was the founder of the Argentine Navy. Today he is still regarded as one of Argentinas national heroes with over 1,200 streets named after him.
The main reason many thousands of travellers visit this cemetery is to see the last resting place of a not only national, but international icon of the 20th century. Maria Eva Duarte de Peron was born on 7th may 1919 and was the wife of the Argentine president Juan Peron, also first lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952.
She said her only ambition was that in the large chapter of history to be written about her husband, the footnotes would mention a woman who brought the ...hopes and dreams of the people to the president, a woman who eventually turned those hopes and dreams into glorious reality.
We continued our travels around this amazing city next a journey down the Avenida Figueroa Alcorta which is a major thoroughfare in Buenos Aires, and home to many great sights, including a most impressive building, part of the university in the city, the school of law
Time to sit and check our map, we found ourselves at Floralis Genérica a sculpture made of steel and aluminum located in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, it was given as a gift to the city by the Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano. Catalano once said that the flower is a synthesis of all the flowers and, at the same time, a hope reborn every day at opening. It was created in 2002. The sculpture was designed to move, closing its petals in the evening and opening them in the morning.
MALBA a modern art museum was next. Created by Argentine businessman Eduardo Costantini, it was inaugurated on September 21, 2001. The institution was organised around the Costantini Collection, and has continued to expand its selection of works from modern artists across Latin America. It also maintains a cultural center, which stages art and film exhibitions and develops cultural activities. The museum receives over a million visitors annually.
The Retiro Mitre, is a large railways station located just opposite Plaza San Martín, The Edwardian-style station building was designed by British architects. Building began in June 1909 and the station was opened on 1 August 1915. The steel structure for the building was made in Liverpool, England, and re-assembled in Argentina. For many years it was considered to be the most important example of structural engineering in South America and architecturally one of the finest buildings in the world.
Torre de los Ingleses (Tower of the English) is a clock tower It was a gift from the local British community to the city in commemoration of the centennial of the May Revolution of 1810.

Florida Street, Buenos Aires Argentine (Pt-1) 26.4.2018
Florida Street is a popular shopping street in city center of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a pedestrian street since 1971. The pedestrian section as such starts at the intersection of Perú Street and Avenida de Mayo, a block north of the Plaza de Mayo. The other part of the Street is not pedestrian. Florida is one of the city's leading tourist attractions. Florida Street bustles with shoppers, vendors, and office workers alike because of its proximity to the financial district. By evening, the pace relaxes as street performers flock to the area, including tango singers and dancers, living statues, and comedy acts. Its variety of retail stores, shopping arcades, and restaurants is of great interest to foreign tourists and business travelers.
