25 May 2015 Massive Texas Flooding-Lake Dam Failed in Bastrop State Park
Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday likened the ferocity of flash flooding that killed at least three people to a tsunami, and authorities said a dam had given way in a state park.
Abbott declared states of disaster in 24 counties and flew over the area south of Austin to assess the damage caused by tornadoes, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding that forced evacuations and rooftop rescues and left thousands of residents without electricity.
This is the biggest flood this area of Texas has ever seen, Abbott said.
It is absolutely massive - the relentless tsunami-type power of this wave of water, he said.
He described homes that were completely wiped off the map by the dangerous weather system that struck Texas and Oklahoma.
2011 Texas Wildfire Aftermath by Emily A. Jaschke
The Texas Wildfires proved to be completely devastating and the worst in Texas history. The fires in Bastrop County alone took 1,554 homes, thus setting a state record as the highest number of homes lost in a single fire in Texas history. Since November 15, 2010 45,359 homes and structures have been lost and 3.5 million acres burned. The proportion of total national acres that have burned in Texas: 49 percent.
With hard work of our local and area firefighters and the help from 49 states plus District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands 29,055 homes were saved as well as countless lives. Thank you!
There is nothing more beautiful than people helping those in need. I believe the state Texas best exemplifies the selfless soul. Whether it be to other states or our own, Texans are always the first to lend a hand.
The United Way Houston, H-E-B, McDonalds, The Austin Humane Society, countless area and state wide businesses, churches, and volunteers joined to provide aid to those suffering from the damages brought on by these fires. I've never been more proud to be a Texan.
The images in this album were taken at Waller County Disaster and Distribution Center on September 17th, where a friend and myself spent the afternoon volunteering. It was an eye-opening experience to say the least. One does not fully comprehend devastation until you witness it first hand. I found it difficult to fight back tears as children were elated to receive school supplies and toys. Parents themselves were crying as volunteers loaded cases of water, animal feed, bags of groceries, clothes, and other necessary items into their vehicles.
Equally emotional was seeing the fire damage first hand. Scorched earth, melted fences ... empty space and a pile of ash where so many homes used to be. Big, black gaping holes are all that is left of trees. Some were still smoking. It's unbelievable how the fires ripped through towns, what it spared and what it did not. I found bright yellow flowers thriving and just a few feet away, across the street, a field had been completely wiped out. Incredible and gut wrenching.
My fellow Texans: These fires may have taken all that you own, but it cannot take who you are. Retain your essence and move forward. You WILL rise from the ashes in beauty. Your recovery will take time, but you are strong. You are a Texan.
You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are. -Eckhart Tolle
