Postvolcanics phenomena in South Harghita Mountains (Romania)
The southern terminal part of the Calimani-Gurghiu-Harghita volcanic range (South Harghita Mts.), more precisely in the area of Ciomadul volcano and its broader environs, a number of features and data point to the still incompletely frozen state of at least one crustal magma chamber in the area (Szakacs and Seghedi, 2013). Surface features include a strong local heat-flux anomaly (strongest in Romania, Demetrescu and Andreescu, 1994) and intense “postvolcanic activity”, most extensive and strongest in Romania and in the whole Carpathian-Pannonian Region (Szakács, 2010) with deep-source (mantle) CO2 emanations (Vaselli et al., 2002). Popa et al. (2012) published seismic and seismic tomography data showing that subcrustal earthquake foci were recorded beneath the area, as well as a low seismic velocity column, similar to that in the Perşani Mts. Moreover, a crustal magma chamber can tentatively be identified along that “soft” column with spatially associated seismic foci in a ca. 8-20 km depth interval. All these features, judged in the context of the very young age of the last eruption (11-35 Ka) allows one to speculate on the active vs. inactive state of the crustal magma chamber beneath Ciomadul volcano. Most probably, the magma chamber is still warm, containing some incompletely solidified magma (Szakacs and Seghedi, 2013).
In this video you can see postvolcanics phenomenas (volcanic gas emanations - mofette, mineralized waters) and a plugged crater (Mohos) in Ciomadu Massif (South Harghita Mountains, Eastern Carpathians). We note also an error that can not be corrected on video: the first objective presented (in the range 0:00 to 4:25 minutes) is not Buffogo swamp, but Apor Baths, known as the Timsos Baths (Apor-fürdő or Apor Lányok Feredője in Hungarian). How looks Apor Bath after 20 years (2015) can be seen here:
