Radio Kootwijk is near a small town in the Dutch municipality of Apeldoorn, with (in 2006) ca. 120 inhabitants. It is situated in a heather- and forest-rich territory in the Veluwe region, east of the sandhills of the Kootwijkerzand and the town of Kootwijk.
The housing accommodations of Radio Kootwijk arose as a result of the building of a shortwave transmitter site with the same name, starting in 1918. The transmitters played an important role in the 20th century as a communication facility between the Netherlands and its then colony of Dutch East Indies. In 1923 Dutch PTT started trans-oceanic telegraphy using a longwave transmitter (a 400KW high frequency alternator) from the German Telefunken company under the callsign PCG, in the 24 kHz and 48 kHz. By 1925 the longwave transmitter was changed by a shortwave tube based, electronic transmitter which had a much better performance due to the better propagation of shortwaves. With this new technology, in 1928 a radio-telephonic connection was established. At the end of World War II, the German occupying forces blew up the transmitter. Afterward some of the radio towers were rebuilt.[1]
Due to the development of new technologies like satellite communication, Radio Kootwijk lost its position as main overseas wireless connection point of the Netherlands. In 1980, the last transmission mast was blown up. In 2004 the park lost its last transmitter functions, and was transferred from the KPN company (successor to PTT) to the State Forestry Commission, which started attracting new buyers. The main building of the former transmitter park, designed by Dutch architect Julius Maria Luthmann and named 'Building A', 'The Cathedral' or sometimes 'The Sphynx', was officially appointed as a monument. It is used as venue and scenery for several cultural events and productions, including the American film Mindhunters in 2004.

Radio Kootwijk The Netherlands - architect J.M. Luthmann - 1923
At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands was a trading nation with extensive overseas territories. Its interests were served by a quick connection to the colonies, especially the Dutch East Indies. Direct communication took place by way of electric telegrams, which required cable connections. Prior to this, the Netherlands was dependent on England and Germany. When the First World War broke out the disadvantages of this dependence increased. In 1918, the government decided to realise their own international communication network, independent of the neighbouring countries. After much political debate it was decided to build a long wave transmission station enabling permanent contact with the Dutch East Indies using radio telegraphs. To establish the radio transmitting station they looked for an uninhabited, remote terrain so there would be minimum interference to the transmission traffic from the environment. The 450 hectare terrain was bought by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management from the Dutch National Forestry Commission. About 150 labourers from Amsterdam levelled the terrain. The antenna terrain was constructed as a circular plain with a diameter of approximately 1200 metres, a ring of five 212 metre high masts around a central mast at the foot of the transmitter building. The radio transmission centre was officially put into operation in May 1923, initially for Morse telegraph traffic. The developments in radio technology advanced rapidly. After a few years it became apparent that the long wave connections were outdated and too expensive. They switched to a short wave frequency for a higher signalling rate, better connections, lower energy consumption and smaller equipment. 'Kootwijk Radio' was the international call sign for radio traffic. Queen Emma brought about the first telephone connection in 1929 with the Dutch East Indies. Staff recruitment began during the construction of the transmitter station. Some of the staff had to be reached and available day and night so should preferably live near the station. At the end of the twenties, about 200 people lived in Radio Kootwijk, a mixed and close-knit community in this isolated enclave of the Veluwe. The community spirit was thus very high. The village had its own fire department, waste collection service, electricity and water facilities. Water was drawn from the pump houses by the water tower.
Building A
The exceptional and unique result of the main building, called building A, is derived from the interplay between necessity and the sources of inspiration. The building could, for example, not be built in wood because of the fire hazard of overheating due to radiation from the transmitters. Thus they chose concrete, which was a little known building material at the time. The building’s design was inspired by the transmission station in Naun Germany, a design by Herman Muthesius. Architect Julius Maria Luthmann (1890-1973) worked for the Dutch Government Building Agency. Luthmanns' interest in Egyptian architecture explains the building’s appearance as a sort of sphinx. As well as characteristics typical of German Expressionism, the building had unmistakable elements of the Amsterdam School style. In this popular building style from the twenties, various artists often collaborated in decorating the buildings. Above the entrance door you can see a relief depicting a mask with an open mouth through which radio waves exit, flanked by two female figures listening, a European and an Eastern women, symbolising the connection between the East and West. The rear is adorned by a large arched window topped with an eagle. The eagle symbolises the freedom of the radio waves in the air, the flight of sound. Both reliefs are designs by Hendrik van den Eijnde, sculptor, furniture designer, graphic artist and illustrator. As of 1962 the transmitter station provided long-distance connections for the maritime industry from the Netherlands under the call sign “Scheveningen Radio” and was part of the state enterprise for Post, Telegraphs and Telephony of the Netherlands. The last manager of the transmitter station finally closed the doors in 1998. Radio Kootwijk is now an exceptional place, that will be conserved for generations to come in an economically responsible way.

Radio Kootwijk old transmitter station 4K (ultra HD)
Radio Kootwijk is a former transmitter park on the Veluwe (a sparsely populated area) that formed an important communication link between the Netherlands and its colonies, especially Dutch-India in the first half of the 20th century. It was built from 1920 to 1922. There were also homes for employees who together formed the same-name village.

Let's take a look at Radio Kootwijk near Apeldoorn
Radio Kootwijk is a former radio transmitting station in the east of the Netherlands near the city of Apeldoorn. It's located in a forrest region called De Veluwe, which is in the centre of the provice of Gelderland.
The building was built in the early 1920's to provide long wave radio communications with the colonies in the east-indies, i.e. Indonesia.
Nearby is also a small town(well, just a few houses actually), which was built for the staff of Radio Kootwijk and construction workers from the Amsterdam area who built the facility. The architect of the building was an architect from Amsterdam (Architect Julius Maria Luthmann), which is not too supprising considering the architectural style of the building.

PERFORATOR XL - Premiere BACKBONE Holland Festival 2016
Perforator is an experimental ensemble founded by Akim Moiseenkov and Marlies van Gangelen. For their first project, instead of performing fully composed works, Perforator commissioned six international composers to contribute ‘musical backbones’ – creative starting points from which the ensemble can explore and create. These ‘musical backbones’ can be anything from a groove, a chord sequence, a melody or a set of instructions. The only restriction is: one backbone has to fit on one A4 sheet of paper. With the backbones functioning as building blocks for an hour of improvisation, in each concert Perforator restructures the content and builds a unique sonic texture.

A trip to Radio Kootwijk
I went on a trip to Radio Kootwijk where in the former radiostation PCG there was an art exebition with machines and sounds by ODD ENJINERS - De volgende toon
From Amsterdam we took the train to Utrecht, from Utrecht the train to Apeldoorn en there we biked to Radio Kootwijk.
Morse machines, radiosounds from long ago, fences you as a visitor could make noise with :-) and the biggest bass-horn in Europe with a frequency just to low that my camera could not detect it but as a human you can hear AND feel and lots more. And offcourse we made a trip to the roof to enjoy the view ... it was not allowed but never the less the door was open so ...
