Buitenverwachting – Beyond Expectations!!!
This place really is beyond expectations. They have platters that perfectly pair with their wines, artisanal coffee, a lovely restaurant and cater for weddings and other functions.
Their Flagship Bordeaux blend, Christine was also at the top of our list with complexity and length that produces a wine with great ageing potential.
This beautiful farm on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg and barely 12km from False Bay, originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa.
Chef Edgar Osojnik’s Austrian roots are evident in their dining experience, which is a delight for the taste buds of the connoisseur.
Edgar’s sense of artistry are portrayed to perfection adding a mouth-watering experience for all palates. Menus are frequently changed, using only the finest produce sourced locally and internationally. “Voted one of the Top 100 Restaurants” American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards – 2016.
Their CoffeeBloc serves world class coffee made from the highest grade beans and roasted at Buitenverwachting by Quaffee who also supply a variety of coffee machines and accessories. Coffee Connoisseur Lars has put his stamp of approval on the selection as is fanatical about the quality and consistency of what gets served here.
If you are looking for more than food, wine and great scenery, you will find Meagan Maack and Colette Martin’s Jewellery collection on display in the tasting room. They also manufacture their jewellery on the Estate in one of the original Cape Dutch buildings. Meagan Maack and Colette Martin go back a long way and have achieved their aspirational dream which is to make exquisite, high quality Jewellery.
We visited Buitenverwachting and selected their Wooded Sauvignon blanc called Maximus (28 months in new french oak) as our gem. It is simply one of a kind.

he Constantia Valley truly is Cape Town’s Vineyard. It is a region with a winemaking history that dates back to 1685 and which boasts 8 award-winning wine estates, Groot Constantia,
Steenberg Vineyards, Constantia Uitsig, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Eagles Nest, Constantia Glen and Silvermist Vineyards. All are within 15 kilometres of the city centre.
Nestled beneath the Table Mountain National Park and commanding vistas of the Constantiaberg and Table Mountain ranges Constantia is the ideal place to base yourself when in Cape
Town.Constantia shares its heritage and landscapes of unsurpassed beauty with the locals who have made it their home. The Constantia Valley receives a steady flow of visitors
throughout the year who come to enjoy an idyllic lifestyle conveniently located close to all major attractions. The Constantia Valley has an appeal that offers something of interest to
everyone, from visiting the wine estates famous for their cool climate wines and offering an array of experiences such as year-round wine tastings and then, picnics live music and
festivals in the warmer months. The mountain ranges and greenbelts offer breathtaking photo opportunities and then there are shops to explore, an adrenalin rushing zip lining
adventure, mountain biking, horse riding, and a growing number of businesses who have chosen to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. One of the oldest areas in Cape Town, and
South Africa, Constantia doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. From the incredible wine farms, to the unrivalled beauty of the valley as a whole, Constantia has a story to
tell.Recently renamed from Peddlars on the Bend and undergoing a major menu overhaul, Peddlar’s is as popular as ever – if not more so. The Volaré Ristorante offers contemporary
Italian cuisine and a warm, relaxed setting, while The Oak Terrace provides a sunny, outdoor setting and casual eating for family and friends. Then there is The Local “the valley’s
amiable, vibrant, local pub. Real beer, great food, the place to meet friends.” Peddlar’s may have undergone something of a transformation, but it is still an institution in the valley.

Wineokes - Constantia Valley
The Constantia wine route is a major tourist hub a few minutes outside of central Cape Town. It is one of the most beautiful wine routes with spectacular views and a collection of the oldest wine farms and youngest wine makers in the Cape (over 10 centuries old). Many of the homesteads along the wine route showcase a Baroque and Cape Dutch architectural style.
Dating back to 1685, we have 10 top quality wine farms to select from. Although they are the oldest in the region they have the youngest wine makers who are innovating and leading the way forward.
This creative hub produces award winning wines and world class restaurants to dine at including Pastis ,La Colombe and Buitenverwachting Restaurant, Catherina’s, Bistro 1682,la Parada, Harbour House, Open Door, Chefs warehouse and many more.
Second pickup is 9:15 at the Constantia Village Shopping Centre. We do this so as to spend more time savouring and experiencing wine compared to waiting for guests.
There is just so much to do in this area. Let us take you on a spectacular journey through the Constantia Valley. Here you can sample and pair food with some of their award winning wines, sip champagne in botique wineries, listen to live music and view beautiful art from local artists, or walk through lush forests and green belts.
Although constantia has it all, specialising in both red and white, the region was noted for its exports of Vin de Constance (Napoleon’s wine) a sweet dessert wine that we can take you past.

Hanging Out In Constantia
Napoleon and Jane Austen were the first to celebrate the wines of Constantia around the world, and now Dan joins the bandwagon, with Steenberg's Cap Classiqu a Klein Constantia sauvignon blanc made with some French assistance, the Christine blend from Buitenverwachting, and High Constantia's Sebastiaan.
[E] Steenberg Vineyards, South Africa, John Loubser
*Come on a wine & food tour with BKWine!* --- Interview with John Loubser, general manager at the Steenberg Vineyards Winery in Constantia on the Cape peninsula in South Africa.
Steenberg means Stone Mountain. The reason is obvious when you come here: you are surrounded by stones and mountains, granite stone mountain. This soil gives fantastic sauvignon blanc wines with lots of minerality. They also have sandy soil, loam and other terroir, but all originates from the granite. Steenberg is a very old farm that dates back to 1682. It was actually the first winemaking farm in the Constantia Valley
The strength and what makes Steenberg Vineyards Winery famous are the sauvignon blancs. The climate is cool which is ideal for these wines. Steenberg makes four different sauvignon blanc wines: an entry level wine, one called Rattle Snake, a Reserve and then the normal sauvignon blanc. The difference is primarily the origin of the grapes, so the selection. But it is also how they vinify it: stainless steel or oak aging, fermentation temperature etc. (Klein Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, Private Cellar SB, HMS Rattlesnake SB, Steenberg SB, and Steenberg SB Reserve -- maybe they have extended their range since)
Sauvignon blanc from Steenberg is different both from new world wines from eg. Australia and New Zeeland and from French style sauvignon blanc. Steenberg from South Africa is in between those two styles not as overwhelmingly aromatic as the NZ style and not quite as steely and lean as the wines from France.
Steenberg also makes red wines: they are primarily famous for their merlots. They have a small planting of nebbiolo that gave the first harvest in 1997. Steenberg was the first to ever plant nebbiolo in South Africa. They have a flagship wine, top of the range prestige cuvee called Catharina, after the founder of the Steenberg winery. It is a blend of five varieties: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, shiraz and the nebbiolo -- a very unique blend. But they don't do pinotage at all. Their full range includes seven different red wines.
So is there a specific house style for Steenberg? It is a cool area where Steenberg is in Constantia, so all wines are cool climate wines. The white wines are more austere and more structured. The reds are not fat and bold but more structured too. They are elegant wines that generally go very well with food.
Steenberg also does sparkling wine: the Method Cap Classique (what must not be called Champagne style...). Today they make 16 000 bottles, all bottle fermented and riddled by hand. It has lots of purity.
At the Steenberg winery they also have an excellent restaurant called Bistro 1682 where you can enjoy their wines together with food.
