Orangutan Jungle Trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra | Travel Vlog
Going on an orangutan jungle trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra has been the highlight of my recent trip to Indonesia! But as amazing as this experience was, I can’t not touch upon some important issues that this trip has brought to light (even more) for me - mainly the deforestation of the rainforest to make space for palm oil plantations, causing the loss of habitat for many now critically endangered species in the process, as well as unethical tourism. Please watch the video until the end and help me spread awareness.

Bukit Lawang, Sumatra - A hidden village of friendly people and beautiful nature
Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan (around 5,000 orangutans occupying the area) and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side.
The Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre for orangutans was founded in 1973. Its main purpose was to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation. The centre closed in 2002 as the place was getting too touristy and unsuitable for animal rehabilitation.
A flash flood hit Bukit Lawang on 2 November 2003.The disaster destroyed the local tourist resorts and had a devastating impact to the local tourism industry in the area. Around 400 houses, 3 mosques, 8 bridges, 280 kiosks and food stalls, 35 hotels and guest houses were destroyed by the flood; 239 people including 5 tourists were killed, and around 1,400 locals lost their homes.Local authorities and an environmental NGO attributed it to illegal logging. Thanks to several international cooperation agencies, the site was rebuilt and re-opened again in July 2004.

Jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang - An awesome experience from North Sumatra
Jungle trekking is the primary activity in Bukit Lawang as it is the gateway to the nearby Gunung Leuser National Park .
Most tourists hire a guide as the jungle is easy to get lost in and requires a permit from Gunung Leuser National Park guide office.
Even though sightings of the orang-utan and other wildlife can never be guaranteed, when following the instructions of your guide the chances are favorable.
Getting too close to an orangutan increases the risk of passing on disease and viral infection, which jeopardizes the orangutans chances of survival and in turn the health and survival of the wild orangutan population in the entire area.
In the forests of Gunung Leuser National Park you can also meet the most famous organgutan – Mina. She is is extremely smart and knows exactly how it works. When there’s a group of people on a jungle trek and Mina appears, a lot of guides are panicking. You have two options: to lave the food behind for Mina and run or to stay calm, try to keep distance and hope that she’s in a good mood and not too hungry.
Another interesting amnimal is the Thomas Leaf Monkey. They have mohawk-style hair, and leap into air with wild abandon as they move from tree to tree.
If you want to go on a multiple day trek make sure you are fit and in good condition. The humidity coupled with the intensity of grade of the hills makes for some hard work but many options for spot. The reward at the end of your jungle adventure is a late afternoon paddle in the river back to the village.
We would like to thank our guide Nurdin, he was great!!

Seeing Orangutans in Bukit Lawang (for free) No guide ????????
This is a guide on how to travel Bukit Lawang. Some will not agree with my methods. I don't mind paying but the local government and guides have set a non negotiable price which is way to high. around 50usd for a one day trek. Don't go without a guide unless you are confident and can navigate easily and study the area.

First time in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra!
Have you ever heard of Bukit Lawang in Sumatra? Neither me. Until we decided to discover the jungle of Sumatra where the Orangutans live. This is like the home base of where your tour starts. It is in the middle of the Sumatran jungle. But instead of a base it is a nice little village with several restaurants, hostels and hotels. The Landak river flows right through Bukit Lawang. Bridges are connecting both sides of Bukit Lawang and walking on those bridges is already an adventure because they are in a very bad condition. Have you ever been there?

Bukit Lawang, Indonesia Jungle trip - 2016.03
Weekend in Bukit Lawang
During a recent surf trip to Sumatra I spent the weekend in Bukit Lawang (a few hours taxi ride from Medan) floating the river and filming orangutans.

And thus ends the most incredible experience trekking through the Sumatran Jungle looking for orangutans. We managed to see a total of 13 orangutans plus some monkeys. I’d highly recommend using Heri Kibo’s company! He took care of my entire itinerary and trekked the whole jungle along with us!

Go Pro | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra | 2016
Just before we were leaving to The Netherlands, we got the chance to go on one more trip. This time we went, together with friends, to Bukit Lawang in north Sumatra.
Bukit Lawang is a wonderfull place for hiking in the jungle, searching for orangutans. We even spent the night in the jungle, which was a great experience! I can highly recommend this trip.

Tube Rafting in Bukit Lawang - Sumatra
In the rainforests of Sumatra are many opportunities to enjoy a taste of river rafting. One of them is tube rafting or tubing in the village of Bukit Lawang, which is divided by Bohorok River. It runs straight through the village and is part of what makes the place so special. The Bohorok river is a popular venue for tubing. Tubing is floating down the river in an inflated truck inner tube. You can hire tubes at many points along the river in the village for the day, walk up stream, and then float down the river.
Rafting traditional ‘jungle style’ on large tubes tied together by expert guides is fun and amazing adrenaline experience. Tubes are attached together to form a kind of canoe and our guide Nurdin as ‘captain’ makes as reach the village safely.

Meeting the Orang Utans and more in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, Indonesia
In the summer of 2018 we visited Indonesia, we started on Sumatra with a visit of Bukit Lawang. We enjoyed climbing around the local bat cave, with plenty of bats, spiders, scorpions, shrimps, crabs and swifts. The next day we went into the national park to find orang utans. It took only an hour to find the first ones and after that we saw many more. we also saw Thomas Leafs monkeys, gibbons and macacs.

Sumatra Kids RESCUED ME from Bukit Lawang River! ????????
I left the big city of Medan to travel to the more peaceful and serene Bukit Lawang. A jungle village of Sumatra, located in the Gunung Leuser National Park, that's famous for it's wild orangutans and rivers.
I took the cheap public bus which leaves from outside Mawar Bakery on the street called Pinang Baris. There's a common scam there where touts will try to convince you to pay for your ticket up front at an extortionate rate. I'd read about this before hand and sure enough it happened to me while I was sitting on the bus waiting for it to leave. Unfortunately I didn't get that on camera. The correct fare is only 30,000 and it paid AFTER reaching your destination.
The food in the Mawar Bakery is excellent and very good value, so it's worth stocking up there before getting on the bus.
At Bukit Lawang Bus Station there were many touts. They are just trying to help you by sell orangutan trekking tours. I just told them all no as I would prefer to book a trusted guide through my hotel. They were very persistent and sticky though.
In Bukit Lawang village, which is only 1.3 km away on a flat road, so is easily walkable, I checked in to my hotel: Wisma Leuser Sibayak. It's one of the more costly hotels in the area but still very cheap. I took one of their best rooms at 400,000 IDR but it seemed like other than size there wasn't much difference between that and the cheaper rooms, starting at 200,000 IDR.
I started the stay with a light meal in the hotel restaurant. Gado Gado is a local Indonesian meal of boiled vegetables and peanut sauce. The healthiest food I'd eaten in a while.
My main activity of the day was tubing and swimming in the river. It didn't start off too well and I had to rely on the locals kids to rescue me.
My first (half) day concluded with a delicious goat barbecue beside the river, hosted by the hotel owner Bob.
