Jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang - An awesome experience from North Sumatra
Jungle trekking is the primary activity in Bukit Lawang as it is the gateway to the nearby Gunung Leuser National Park .
Most tourists hire a guide as the jungle is easy to get lost in and requires a permit from Gunung Leuser National Park guide office.
Even though sightings of the orang-utan and other wildlife can never be guaranteed, when following the instructions of your guide the chances are favorable.
Getting too close to an orangutan increases the risk of passing on disease and viral infection, which jeopardizes the orangutans chances of survival and in turn the health and survival of the wild orangutan population in the entire area.
In the forests of Gunung Leuser National Park you can also meet the most famous organgutan – Mina. She is is extremely smart and knows exactly how it works. When there’s a group of people on a jungle trek and Mina appears, a lot of guides are panicking. You have two options: to lave the food behind for Mina and run or to stay calm, try to keep distance and hope that she’s in a good mood and not too hungry.
Another interesting amnimal is the Thomas Leaf Monkey. They have mohawk-style hair, and leap into air with wild abandon as they move from tree to tree.
If you want to go on a multiple day trek make sure you are fit and in good condition. The humidity coupled with the intensity of grade of the hills makes for some hard work but many options for spot. The reward at the end of your jungle adventure is a late afternoon paddle in the river back to the village.
We would like to thank our guide Nurdin, he was great!!

Orangutan Jungle Trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra | Travel Vlog
Going on an orangutan jungle trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra has been the highlight of my recent trip to Indonesia! But as amazing as this experience was, I can’t not touch upon some important issues that this trip has brought to light (even more) for me - mainly the deforestation of the rainforest to make space for palm oil plantations, causing the loss of habitat for many now critically endangered species in the process, as well as unethical tourism. Please watch the video until the end and help me spread awareness.

Bukit Lawang, Sumatra - A hidden village of friendly people and beautiful nature
Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan (around 5,000 orangutans occupying the area) and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side.
The Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre for orangutans was founded in 1973. Its main purpose was to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation. The centre closed in 2002 as the place was getting too touristy and unsuitable for animal rehabilitation.
A flash flood hit Bukit Lawang on 2 November 2003.The disaster destroyed the local tourist resorts and had a devastating impact to the local tourism industry in the area. Around 400 houses, 3 mosques, 8 bridges, 280 kiosks and food stalls, 35 hotels and guest houses were destroyed by the flood; 239 people including 5 tourists were killed, and around 1,400 locals lost their homes.Local authorities and an environmental NGO attributed it to illegal logging. Thanks to several international cooperation agencies, the site was rebuilt and re-opened again in July 2004.

Bukit Lawang Jungle Trek, Meeting Mina. Sumatra (Indonesia Part 3)
Follow our journey trekking through the Gunung Leuser National Park with our hero of a guide, *Cee Lo (*probably misspelt). We would encounter a variety of animals and eventually meet the fearsome queen of the jungle, Mina (aka The Mina). With a ruthless reputation for stealing backpacks and biting people we were lucky to leave with the footage intact.
Aside from the jungle, this video also features a walk around Bukit Lawang, river tubing and a selection of Bukit Lawang’s greatest hits.
Most of the music featured is performed by staff at the Junia Guesthouse, Cee Lo and friends of Cee Lo/ the guesthouse.
The tubing music is- Beach Bum Happy Rock- Kevin Macleod

Orangutans and Sumatra Jungle Trekking in Bukit Lawang, Indonesia
Bukit Lawang Orangutan tracking, trekking and tubing.
I ordered the Bukit Lawang Orangutan tracking, trekking, and tubing activities from the owner of my hotel, Wisma Leuser Sibayak. This was part of my Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba Itinerary. Ricky who was the representative of the hotel was also my guide during the three hours activities. In the afternoon of January 14, after lunch, we started the trekking. Ricky’s associates and colleagues Nuria from Germany and Wan joined us.
We were also lucky to have seen Thomas’ leaf monkey. A relative of the silver leaf monkey I am familiar with in Selangor, Malaysia. It was a male monkey calling its partner using its distinct vocalization. The monkey looked friendly, clean and smooth. It was not scared of our presence at all.
Finally, we reached the meeting point for the tubing activity. There waited Ricky’s partner named Wan. Before tubing, we had a short break. We ate pineapples and some bananas. Then the macaques started gathering nearby which signaled us to already proceed with the tubing back towards Wisma Leuser Sibayak.
January is considered low season in Bukit Lawang. However, there is a chance to find the Sumatran Orangutans like I did.

2 Day Jungle Trek in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, Indonesia (July '16)
One of the two only regions in the world with a wild Orangutan habitat.
In the video, we follow jungle trails, encounter Thoma's Leaf Monkeys (also an endemic species in Northern Sumatra), we visit Mina, the Queen of the Jungle (a female orangutan that was rescued from a circus and reintroduced to the wild), and enjoy a bus ride back to Binjai.

Tube Rafting in Bukit Lawang - Sumatra
In the rainforests of Sumatra are many opportunities to enjoy a taste of river rafting. One of them is tube rafting or tubing in the village of Bukit Lawang, which is divided by Bohorok River. It runs straight through the village and is part of what makes the place so special. The Bohorok river is a popular venue for tubing. Tubing is floating down the river in an inflated truck inner tube. You can hire tubes at many points along the river in the village for the day, walk up stream, and then float down the river.
Rafting traditional ‘jungle style’ on large tubes tied together by expert guides is fun and amazing adrenaline experience. Tubes are attached together to form a kind of canoe and our guide Nurdin as ‘captain’ makes as reach the village safely.

A once in a lifetime experience trekking with Orangutans | Bukit Lawang (Indonesia Ep 4)
Bukit Lawang is the gateway to trekking with Orangutans in Sumatra, and Sumatra is one of only two places in the world you can see Orangutans in the wild. We were not going to miss out, and on arriving in Bukit Lawang we booked a three day two night trek into the Gunung Leuser National Park. The trekking was awesome, although a bit of rain and some steep trails made it hard work in places. Our wildlife encounters included nine Orangutans, two species of monkey, lots of birds, monitor lizards, and a snake. The accommodation was rustic but the food was great. The trekking finished with a beautiful waterfall for a swim and then rafting out of the jungle back to Bukit Lawang. The bat cave was an interesting way to finish our time in Bukit Lawang. A Bukit Lawang orangutan trek is an amazing 'bucket-list' experience. Awesome!

Bukit Lawang in the heart of Sumatra is one of the natural wonders of Indonesia. Surrounded by jungle and relatively unspoilt to the outside world, this place is a shining example of how ecotourism can work in Indonesia.
