Buland Darwaza illuminated during the Urs in Ajmer
Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji (1469-1500) himself was a devotee of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin and it was almost certainly he who funded the construction of the Buland Darwaza, one of the ceremonial gates of the dargah, and so-called because of its great height. The Buland Darwaza is sometimes attributed to Sultan Alauddin Khilji, some refer today to it as the ‘Ala I Darwaza ‘ but this is unlikely, and is no doubt the result of a confusion between the Khiljis of Malwa and Mandu, and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi (1298-1316). Before the commencement of Urs Sharif a flag is hoisted on top of this gate with grand ceremony on the 25th Jamadiulsaani for ushering the ‘Urs’ of Khwaja Saheb, which starts from 1st of Rajab(The 7th month of lunar Calendar).
The Buland Darwaza, can, therefore, more acceptably be attributed to Ghiyas al-din Khilji. It was not only Akbar and the Khilji Sultans who adorned Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty ‘s tomb. By the early seventeenth century the dargah was clearly an impressive establishment with a considerable staff financed by the endowments and offerings of devotees. There was already accommodation for the staff, facilities for the pilgrims’ ritual ablutions, a monumental gateway (the Buland Darwaza), at the entrance of the shrine, and a lavishly decorated mausoleum for the saint.

The Degs
In a large Dergah there are two Degs (cauldrons for cooking food) on either side of the Saham Chiragh (courtyard lamp) fixed into solid masonry in which a palatable mixture of rice sugar, ghee (butter) and dried fruits is cooked for distribution to the public as tabarruk. The circumference at the edge of the larger cauldron is 10-1/4 feet. It cooks 70 mounds of rice, while the smaller Deg takes 28 mounds. In the Dergah at Ajmer one of them was presented by Akbar in 1567 A.D. The princes or the well-to-do pilgrims order these Degs to be cooked generally during the Urs period.
The Langar Khana at Ajmer
Bari Deg : Inside the Sahan-e-Chiragh and on the right side of Buland Darwaza is located Bari Deg. Emperor Akbar pledged to visit Ajmer Sharif on foot and presented a large cauldron if victorious in Chittaurgarh battle. So he kept his words after winning the battle. The circumference of the cauldron (Deg) is 12.5 yards and 125 mounds of rice can be cooked in it at a time. It was presented in 976 Hijra.
Chhoti Deg : It is located on the left side of Buland Darwaza inside Sahan-e-Chiragh. It was presented by Sultan Nooruddin Jahangir in 1013 Hijra. Eighty mounds of rice can be cooked in it at a time.

बुलंद दरवाजा का इतिहास || Buland Darwaza History in Hindi || Facts about Buland Darwaza in Hindi
Buland Darwaza (Hindi: बुलंद दरवाज़ा, Urdu: بُلند دروازه[1]), or the Gate of victory, was built in 1572 A.D.[2] by Mughal emperor Akbar to commemorate his victory over Gujarat. It is the main entrance to the palace at Fatehpur Sikri, a which is 43 km from Agra, India.[3][4]
Buland Darwaza is the highest gateway in the world and is an example of Mughal architecture. It displays Akbar's empire
The Buland Darwaza is made of red sandstone, decorated by white and black marble and is higher than the courtyard of the mosque. The Buland Darwaza is symmetrical and is topped by large free standing kiosks, which are the chhatris. It also has at the top center, terrace edge gallery-kiosks on the roof, stylized buckler-battlements, small minar-spires, and inlay work with white and black marble. On the outside a long flight of steps sweeps down the hill giving the gateway additional height. It is 40 metres high and 50 metres from the ground. The total height of the structure is about 54 metres from the ground level. It is a 15-storied high gateway acting as the southern entrance of the city of Fatehpur Sikri. The approach to the gate consists of 42 steps.[7] It is semi octagonal in plan and two smaller triple-storeyed wings on either side. It has three kiosks on its top surrounded by thirteen smaller domed kiosks. There are smaller turrets surrounding the gateway.[5][6] The expanse is broken by arched niches, small chhatries and marble highlights. ights the courtyard of the Jama Masjid. The principal arch stands in the centre of three projecting sides and topped by a dome. The central arch is broken into three tiers with rows of smaller arches and flat brackets.[8]
The great gate itself is plain. The three horizontal panels of buff stone noticeable in Badshahi Darwaza are also present here. The plain red sandstone spandrels are framed in white marble with a flower like ornament inlaid in white marble at the apex of the arch, and a flattish rosette, centered with the narrow panel above it, on either side. The cusped ornament, large and bold in fact, but small and delicate when seen from below, is carried down below the springing of the arch. Two pieces have been broken off from the left hand side and eight from the right. The arch has three actual openings bordered by decorative panels and superimposed by three other arched openings crowned by a semi-dome.[5][6] The total height of the Gate above the pavement is 176 ft.
A Persian inscription on eastern archway of the Buland Darwaza records Akbar's conquest over Uttar Pradesh and the victory in Gujarat in 1573. An inscription on the central face of the Buland Darwaza describes Akbar's religious openness.

Ajmer Urs: an eye for an eye, taken literally, with stunts that shock
Sufi Kalandars or wandering ascetics puls out their eyes using a knife and iron rods, pierce their cheeks and tongue using iron rods during a procession of Ajmer Urs in Rajasthan.
Located in the heart of Rajasthan, Ajmer is a small town. Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage centre for Muslims as well as Hindus.
Ajmer Sharif is a shrine of the sufi saint, Moinuddin Chisti. The entrance gate of the Dargah is known as Buland Darwaza and it was constructed by Sultan Mahmood Khilji of the Malwa Sultanate. Every year in the month of April or May, an Urs is celebrated at Ajmer-e-Sharif. This religious festival is observed to mark the death anniversary of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and the event is held over six days.
Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti is known by various names like Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, “Sultan-Ul-Hind”, Khwaja Baba, Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Ajmeri, Khwaja Sahib, Khwaja Ajmeri or Sant Moinuddin Chishty.
As a final resting place of this venerated Sufi Saint, muslims from different parts of the country as well as from all over the world come to the Dargah to pay obeisance. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek blessings from the Khawaja. Devotees visit the holy Dargah to pay homage during this occasion.
The main attraction of the Urs is the Kalanders known as the friends of Garib Nawaz. They come from different parts of the country and walk in the procession to celebrate the sacred festival. They also offer ‘chadars’ at the dargah of the saint. They perform bizarre stunts in the procession. Some of the Kalandars show street magic while others pop out their eyes with pointy knives.
Devotees who come to pay obeisance, bring chadars along with them. They go to Shahjahani Hauz and perform the sacred ritual of Wuzu with the holy water. Wuzu is the practice of washing oneself in Islam before each prayer or namaz. After the ritual they visit the dargah to offer their Chaddar. They pass through the Jannati Darwaza to get rid of their problems. It is said that those who are unable to visit Mecca, come to this dargah which is considered almost as holy.
The Shahjahani Mosque stands tall in the dargah premises, which is an outstanding piece of Mughal architecture. The mosque was built by Shah Jahan in memory of Hazrat Khwaza Moinuddin Chisty.
In the evening, before prayer, the ritual lighting takes place. Savants of the shrine bring lamps inside the tomb, accompanied by the beating of drums in the background. After the ritual, the lamps are placed in the four corners of the tomb.
Immediately after this ritual, the candle touching ceremony starts, in which savants of the dargah touch candles to each person’s head before offering it to the Khwaja. It is considered to be one of the most significant rituals of the Dargah.
After completion of all these rituals, the evening Namaz starts. Women are not allowed to do Namaz alongside men but have seperate section in which to pray.
Inside Dargah Sharif there are two big pots known as ‘Degs’ – the Badi Deg and the Choti deg. People put offerings of money, food items, clothes etc. in these degs.
One of the major attractions at the dargah are the qawwali programs organised during the famous annual Urs in the evenings. Sufi Qawwals from all over the country come to the Ajmer Urs and dedicate their Qawwali to Garib Nawaz.
