What's camping without a day at the lake? Jon Hansen heads to Camp Bullfrog Lake for our Summer Camp Week edition.
Bicycling Across Lake Powell Utah by Ferry at Hall's Crossing and Bullfrog
I missed the last ferry on the previous day, so I awoke early to catch the 8am Ferry across Lake Powell in Utah. This is what it looks like while riding down into where the Ferry loads and unloads. I also take you under the deck to where the fuel tanks are located.
Watch and Share on Facebook:
Ferry service runs daily between Bullfrog Marina and Hall's Crossing. Crossing takes approximately 25 minutes to cover the 3.1 mile distance. The Ferry in effect is an extension of Utah State Highway 276 in that it connects northern and southern portions of the roadway across Lake Powell.
Vehicle capacity is 22 cars or any combination of cars, trucks, buses or other equipment that can fit on the deck. Maximum passenger capacity is 150.
Much Love,
Wayne

of the Capitol Reef Visitor Center
and extends south to Bullfrog Marina

This road is paved for the first 10 miles

maintained dirt road.
The road runs along the eastern
side of the Waterpocket Fold and offers

THE NOTOM
area was originally settled in 1883
and, at its largest population, was
once inhabited by 23 families.
Today Notom is the jumping off point
for exploration of the eastern edge of
Capitol Reef National Park
and is home to the Sunlit Oasis.
The Notom Road Scenic Backway
leads from Highway 24, along the
east side of Capitol Reef National Park
to the junction ofnd hiking opportunities.
Access to many of the

Visitors are advised to check with the

Notom Road
Detailed Trail Description from
our Guidebook
This easygoing route passes through
the old town site of Notom and across
the Sandy Creek Benches to travel along
inside the Waterpocket Fold in
Capitol Reef National Park.
It is often suitable for passenger cars
in dry weather, but loose sand, bulldust,
and a couple of rough wash
crossings make it preferable to
have a high-clearance vehicle.
Special Attractions:
Old town site of Notom;
Views of the Waterpocket Fold and
Oyster Shell Reef within
Capitol Reef National Park.
High clearance vehicles are preferred,
but not necessary.
This trail is dirt roads, but may have
rocks, grades, water crossings, or
ruts that make clearance a concern in
a normal passenger vehicle.
The trail is fairly wide, so that passing
is possible at almost any point along
the trail.
Mud is not a concern under
normal weather conditions.
CAPITOL REEF
The most scenic portion
of the Waterpocket Fold,
found near the
Fremont River, is known as
Capitol Reef:
capitol for the white domes of
Navajo Sandstone that resemble
capitol building domes,
and reef for the rocky
cliffs which are a barrier
to travel, like a coral reef.
The geologic story of Capitol Reef
can be broken down into three steps,
each of which occurred over millions
of years of geologic time:
deposition, uplift, and erosion.
The area of Capitol Reef
has been a homeland
to people for thousands of years.
Archaic hunters and gatherers migrated
through the canyons.
Fremont Culture solidified around
500 CE, from food foraging groups,
to farmers of corn, beans and squash.
Petroglyphs etched in rock walls
and painted pictographs remain as
sacred remnants of the
ancient Indians' saga. Explorers,
Mormon pioneers and others
arrived in the 1800s, settling in what
is now the Fruita Rural Historic District.
They planted and nurtured orchards
of apples, pears, and peaches.
The National Park Service preserves
the stories of those who came before.
Discover the Waterpocket Fold,
a geologic wrinkle on earth!
Located in south-central Utah
in the heart of red rock country,
Capitol Reef National Park is a
hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons,
domes and bridges in the Waterpocket Fold,
a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth)
extending almost 100 miles.
