Singapore River Bumboat Cruise
Singapore River is where the colourful and romantic history of the river and the myths and legends can still conjure up memories of the lighters, bumboats, tongkangs with their painted eyes to see the danger ahead and sampans of yesteryear.
Some of the temples, shrines and other places of worship still stand in the vicinity of the river. Bridges such as Anderson Bridge, Elgin Bridge and Cavenagh Bridge still remain, the Merlion, the shophouses, and the large trees such as Banyan and Madras Thorn. Some parts of this area include quays such as Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Robertson Quay, which generated trade and extensive demand for services with the boats that landed at the quays. Boat Quay itself was handling three quarters of the shipping service in the 1860s. Shophouses and warehouses flourished around the quays due to their proximity to trade during the colonial era, but presently house various bars, pubs and restaurants, as well as old shops.
Cruise is approximately 40 min round trip.

Singapore Bum Boat River Cruise Highlights. Is this trip a must-do or a must-don't??
Taking a cuise along Singapore River in a bum boat has become a visitor must do, and a popular thing to do in Singapore. In this video I tell some of the background to the boats, the river and take you on a cruise and point out the highlights and sights.
The Singapore River winds through the heart of the city and for more than a century Bum Boats ferried cargo along it. No longer needed, the Singapore River Cruise company started converting these into pleasure boats to ferry tourists around the iconic sights such as the Merlion (a fountain with lion head and a fish body, the mystical creature that Prince Sang Nila Utama saw in 11th century when he discovered the island and lent the city its name Lion (Singa) City (Pura). The route also passes the striking 55-story Marina Bay Sands Hotel with its sky terrace spanning the three buildings, the unusual looking ArtScience Museum and floating open-seating theatre. It then passes the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. Singapore’s main entertainment and performing arts centre.
The old diesel engines have been replaced with electric ones, making them cleaner and more environmental. The fleet has grown from 4 to over 24. They wind their way between Marina Bay and Clarke Quay throughout the day and into the night passing under old bridges, important historic sights and modern skyscrapers. There is commentary throughout the trip. It slips past the official landing site of Sir Thomas Raffles in 1819, the father of Singapore that triggered the growth and significance of the city and a trading centre.
The regular bum boat rides start or end at Clarke Quay. The fun and party centre of Singapore, packed with restaurants, bars and clubs. It is though possible to head further along the river to Robertson’s Quay by taking a private charter hire of one of the boats. This is what I was on.
The usual river cruise lasts around 45 minutes and there are four quays you can join the trip at: Bayfront South Jetty by the Marina bay sands, Merlion Park Jetty, , Clarke Quay Jetty, Fullerton Jetty at Boat Quay.
It’s become a Singapore visitor essential and is a great way to get an overview of the city. I recommend it.

SINGAPORE BUMBOAT RIVER CRUISE
Singapore River Cruise
Recorded January 5, 2016
My cruise down the Singapore River begins at Merlion Park. The cruise is conducted on one of the city's historic bumboats. Bumboats have been plying the Singapore River for more than a century. The Singapore river consist of 3 different quays, Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay. Each quay has its own uniqueness, from its design to its history.
From:
Singapore River Cruise
Many of Singapore's best tourist attractions seen from the Singapore River Cruise. Starting at Marina Bay Sands, along the river to the CBD skyscrapers and the Marina Bay 5 star hotels and Marina Bay Grandstand. Past the Merlion and under the Anderson and Cavenagh Bridges, taking in part of the Formula 1 circuit and onto Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. Some of the most expensive real estate on the planet and eye candy for tourists.

Singapore River Cruise & Laser Show - SINGAPORE
We got to go on the Singapore River Cruise at night. It was so pretty with all of the city lights reflecting on the water. I loved how there was commentary through the speakers on the boat giving us heaps of information about Singapore as we moved through different areas.
Watch to the end to see the spectacular laser show in front of the Marina Bay Sands. It was so cool!

Discovering the scenic river in an authentic bumboat of yesteryear. The Singapore River runs through the city and used to be the lifeline of Singapore. It was here where the first immigrants erked out a meagre living and helped transform Singapore from an obsure fishing village to a great seaport. Hop on the Original Singapore River Cruise (SRC) and soak in the tranquil ambience of the river side as we embark on a unique journey down the river to discover the past, present and possibly the Future.

In 1987, Singapore River Cruise was awarded with the tender license to run river services on Singapore River and the bumboats were once again brought into Singapore River by SRC to preserve the river heritage of its old charm and memmory. This marks a new chapter in the Singapore River history, as SRC became the first to operate such service.
From a humble fleet of 4 bumboats in 1987, Singapore River Cruise has since increased its number to 24 today with a few new additions coming onboard soon. Under its strong management, SRC has developed a firm network of channel intermediaries both local and overseas, government agencies, embassies, event organizers and other operators in the tourism sectors.
As an active operator that has helped to transform the old Singapore River to one of our tourism icons today, Singapore River Cruise has repeatedly been awarded by Singapore Tourism Board with operating license to continue to run the river services on Singapore River.
Stretching only 4.1 kilometres from its mouth at Anderson Bridge to Kim Seng Bridge at the other end, Singaopore River flows under 12 bridges and sees numerous historical buildings on its banks.

There are two types of River Cruise Tours: - The Singpapore River Experience and New River Experience. The Singapore River Experience is a 30 mins cruise which covers from Clarke Quay to Clifford Pier. The New River Experience is a 45 mins cruise which covers the whole river from Robertson Quay to Clifford Pier. We highly recommend the New River Experience tour.

Singapore. Bumboat River cruise
Ride a bumboat down the Singapore River to Boat Quay!
It's $3 for a ride between stops and $22 for the full 40 minute tour with a commentary on the rich history of the Singapore River, Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay, the historic bridges and buildings along the river banks.
There are 2 companies with the bumboat service - Singapore River Cruise and Singapore River Explorer. Both ply pretty much the same route. The best way is to get to Clarke Quay MRT, cut through Central Mall, and you will see the river! Look out for booths along the river by Singapore River Cruise or Explorer and get a ticket!

Singapore River Cruise Clark Quay Boarding 2018
I am at Clark Quay. I found the Singapore River Cruise kiosk, which sells tickets for the river cruise. There was a line of tourists (I think from Germany) waiting for their boat. They were all part of the same tour group. A wonderful afternoon to take a river cruise. Hope they enjoyed the ride! Welcome to Singapore!
