Driving to the Botanical Gardens in Dominica (Bumpiing Tours - December 27, 2011)
DOMINICA = called the NATURE ISLAND
Our private tour (with Bumpiing Tours) started in Dominica's capital, ROSEAU and our tour guide Gary drove us (in an AC van) to the Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls and the Wotten Waven Sulphur Springs.
Driving back to Roseau, we passed though the Dominica Botanical Gardens heading to our last stop: the Champagne Reef.
- Seen a Banyan tree, the only Sausage Tree in Dominica (from Africa), rare parrots and the famous African Baobab tree that crushed over a school bus being toppled by Hurricane David in 1979.

Dominica Trip - Royal Caribbean Cruise
Much of volcanic Dominica is blanketed by untamed rainforest that's a verdant backdrop to experiences such as an intense trek to a bubbling lake, soothing your muscles in hot sulfur springs, getting pummeled by a waterfall, snorkeling in a glass of ‘champagne’, swimming up a narrow gorge – the list goes on.
Dominica has been spared mass tourism, in large part because there are very few sandy beaches, no flashy resorts and no direct international flights. Whether you’re into trekking high into the mountaintops or exploring the watery world below, Dominica is the place to go for those who prefer hiking boots over high heels and are content with a nightlife where the only music is the murmur of the jungle. Dominica has surprisingly long drives for such a small island, so it’s better to pick a spot or two and explore instead of bouncing around. If you can do it in the mountains (hiking, bird-watching, searching for hidden pools and waterfalls) or the water (diving, snorkeling, kayaking), you can do it in Dominica. Don't miss the ancient forests of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, home to the otherworldly Boiling Lake and the spectacular Trafalgar Falls. There are a few sandy beaches, but most require a little gumption to find and there are usually only a few lodging choices nearby, at most.

Dominica: Driving through the lush jungles of Dominca towards the capital Roseau
Moving around from the country of the Commonwealth of Dominica is such a beautiful experience. The lush foliage, flowers and mountain views are astounding. Dominica is essentially a mountainous jungle with villages carved out of the jungle. Most of the roads are one lane roads but are in good condition. The roads move along the sides of the mountains and many have steep cliffs or make dramatic cuts through mountain tops and deep valleys. The views are just breathtaking. People drive at a comfortable pace and are courteous to oncoming vehicles. Everyone is relaxed and friendly (no road rage).
If you have ever been to a botanical garden in a large city and have smelled the smell of tropical trees and plants, then you will know what it is to smell the air in Dominica. The entire island smells of a beautiful odor of tropical foliage so fresh is the smell that it is completely intoxicating.
The sound in the video is the wind blowing against the camera because I had my arm out the window holding the camera while Pepper was driving (Pepper from pepperscottage.com). As he drives around corners Pepper often beeps to notify oncoming traffic that a car is coming in the opposite direction. This is a safety measure that is ingrained in everyone's driving habits in Dominica, and especially necessary when there is a cliff at the side.

Mr. Nice Fruit Stand in Dominica & Angel's Trumpet flowers (Bumpiing Tours - December 27, 2011)
DOMINICA = called the NATURE ISLAND
Driving to the Trafalgar Falls, we finally found Mr. Nice Fruit Stand open (being a holiday, he wasn't there earlier that morning when we drove up to the Emerald Pool & Waterfall).
- Enjoyed complimentary fresh fruits that are growing around the island (coconuts, sugar cane, bananas, grapefruit, pineapples) and we got to taste his famous COCONUT CANDY that gets you Dandy!
- TIPS are not required but certainly appreciated. As Mr. Nice says:
if you are being NICE to others then good things may come your way!

Dominca, The Nature Island: Astonishing number of fruits in small garden!
This video was taken on June 29th 2013 when I visited the village of Castle Bruce with Pepper from Pepper Tours. The house in this video was recently sold for about 50,000 $US and sits on a small parcel of land, about 100 feet by 100 feet. The house is in the process of being renovated and has a beautiful view of the Atlantic ocean. What was really astonishing was the variety of fruits growing on the small parcel of land. The young man in the video, Kurt (24 years old), grew up and lives across from this house in the village of Castle Bruce. He shows describes all the fruits and plants on the land, which include several mango trees, pineapple, bread fruit, goose berries, a large and small cinnamon tree, several small lime trees, golden apples, cherries, sugar cane, guava cherries, papaya, star fruit, noni fruit, avocado, etc. Can you imagine having so much in a small garden? Dominica is truly an astonishingly beautiful place. I was blown away! Dominica has the freshest, healthiest, largest variety of fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs I have ever seen growing in such abundance. The land is very fertile and nobody ever uses chemicals of any kind on the land or produce. Truly bio!
Dominca has few beaches and even fewer with white sand. Most are dark volcanic sand or rock beaches. This keeps away the hordes of tourists. There are no major hotel chains and all the hotels are small and run by people who love and respect the country and the beauty of the nature that surrounds them.
Dominica is an eco tourist destination with miles of hiking trails through lush, thick, beautiful jungles. No dangerous animals or critters of any sort. Many humming birds, parrots, iguanas and cute lizards of all kinds. Just a stunning place to be!
The people are very friendly, and life goes at about a third of the pace in the western world. Everyone is smiling, singing, dancing, chatting and enjoying life. There are many centenarians because of the clean and pure environment. No slums and no abject poverty. With fruits all over the place... mangoes and oranges hanging in abundance on the trees on the roadsides, nobody ever goes hungry in this beautiful country.
A big thank you to Kurt and Pepper.
If you are going to visit Dominica, you need to hire Pepper. He grew up on the island and knew every place to go and see. He shows me places that most tourists never get to see. He was fantastic! pepperscottage.com
